Buero Vallejo is Spain's most important living playwright. His profound, innovative theatre has earned him success and respect since 1949. Each new play has been an exciting experiment with dramatic form as well as a powerful expression of a tragic view of human life and Spanish society. A Dreamer for the People was first performed in 1958. In this history play, the first of a remarkable series, culminating in La detonacion (The Shot also published by Aris & Phillips), the dreamer of the title is the often maligned Marquis of Esquilache, the reformist minister of Carlos III. Buero sets off Esquilache's relations with the king, the aristocracy, his wife and his maidservant against a lively re-creation of the build-up to the famous 1766 Capes and Hats Revolt in the streets of Madrid. Public history and private tragedy are brought together in a complex structure, bringing into clear focus the clash between forces of change and immobility that lay at the heart of both the 18th century and the Franco period in Spain. In returning his proofs, Buero compliments the author of this first translation into English of his play: 'La version de Mr Thompson es muy cuidada y fiel, asi como acertadas y oportunas sus notas'.

One of the best works of Buero Vallejo is a historical drama, energetic, about the times of enlightened despotism, with the Esquilache Mutiny of 1766 as the central point. Although it opens a window to the lights and shadows of an 18th-century world (of a Spain), it is able to transfer our human and political conflicts to that remote space of timelessness (in the good sense). It is never, never, effective, even in its symbolism and despite the fact that the talent of his literature allows it more than enough. It always radiographs us from the equidistance of the narrator and does not lecture, and of course, even in this work that focuses on the Marquis of Esquilache (minister of Charles III), it listens with equal attention and respect to the "most people": to women, to the poor, to those who lived in the greatest ostracism of their times.
Moreover, this drama not only presents a vivid picture of the historical events but also delves deep into the human nature and the social contradictions of that era. The characters are vividly portrayed, and their actions and decisions are influenced by the complex historical background and their own beliefs and desires. Through this work, we can better understand the past and draw lessons from it for our present and future.
In conclusion, Buero Vallejo's this historical drama is a masterpiece that combines historical authenticity with artistic innovation. It not only provides us with a wonderful literary enjoyment but also makes us think about the important issues of human society and history.
A historical drama by Buero Vallejo that has surprised me due to the psychology of its characters and because I have learned things about a historical period that I knew almost nothing. "Long live Esquilache, death to the king!" This drama offers a fascinating exploration of the human psyche within a specific historical context. The characters are complex and multi-dimensional, their actions and decisions driven by a range of emotions and motives. Through their stories, we gain a deeper understanding of the political and social upheavals of that time. It is not just a tale of historical events but a study of how people are affected by them. The phrase "Viva Esquilache, muera el rey!" adds an element of drama and passion, highlighting the conflicts and tensions that existed. Overall, this drama is a captivating and educational experience that has broadened my knowledge and appreciation of history and human nature.
