"حين يتم تجريد المرء من هذه الحرية الأساسية، حرية الانسحاب والاحتجاب عن الناس عند الضرورة، فإنَّ كل الحريات الأخرى تصبح عديمة القيمة. آنئذ تفقد الحياة معناها."

لطالما شعرتُ بالحمامة ككائن يحمل في تفاصيله روح الشيطان؛ كانت هذه الفكرة عكس ما هو متعارف عن الحمام من وداعة ولطافة. كلما حاولت قهر هذه الفكرة، كلما زادت قناعتي بها في كل مرة أكون فيها وجهاً لوجه مع هذا الكائن. هذا العمل أكّد لي هذا الشعور، وشرحه تماماً في صفحاته. فالخوف والشر قد يكمن في تفاصيل ليست على ذات المعنى والإدراك للجميع؛ حتى أنك في بعض الأحيان لا تستطيع شرحها؛ أنت فقط تحسها. عمل بديع!

من بديهيات هذه الحياه أنها أخبث من أن تخدع
فما بنيته يوما على أساس واهى ظانا بغرورك أن العالم سيرفق بك و ببناءك التافه سينهار حتما لسبب أوهى و ربما حتى لسبب مضحك
كل دفاعاتك و تحصيناتك التى نصبتها حولك ظنا منك أنك أذكى من الحياه و أدهى من القدر ستتفتت أمامك أمام أصغر نسمه من نسمات الصباح
كل ما أرتضيته لنفسك دون ذرة رضى حقيقى سينقلب ضدك يوما ناكرا جميلك بمنتهى اللؤم
كل تصرف تصرفته إرضاءا لغيرك متجاهلا رغباتك الحقيقيه سيحاسبك يوم لا ينفعك أى دفاع و لا يسعفك أى توسل
فيما يتعلق بالفرص الثانيه فالحياه ليست كريمه ابدا
إذا حدث ذات يوم و أفقت من غيبوبتك ستكتشف بديهيه جديده و هى أنه ليس هناك أى فرصه لإعادة الحياه و الرجوع بالزمن
جوناثان عاش نصف حياته تقريبا وفقا لمفاجأت القدر و رغبات الغير ينقل من بيته بسبب الحرب يتزوج إرضاءا لعمه يعمل عمل لا يحبه و لكنه يوفر له حياه كريمه يخاف الجميع دون إستثناء يتصرف فقط وفقا لما تمليه صورة المواطن المثالى . جوناثان صنع لنفسه قوقعه كامله أمنه لا تتسع لسواه تحصن بها من الناس و القدر و العالم ثم ماذا ؟؟
ثم انهار كل ذلك أمام حمامه !!
إبتداءا من ذلك اليوم الذى حطت فيه الحمامه الرماديه صاحبة العيون البنيه الصغيره فى ممر بيته إكتشف جوناثان نفسه من جديد كل ضعفه و إنطباعاته الثابته الخاطئه ، رغباته المكبوته و تمرده غير المعلن ثم ؟؟
راحت السكره و جاءت الفكره كما كانت جدتى تقول
عاد لعمله بعدما زال غضبه بتمشيه على نهر السين و عاد لغرفته "قوقعته" بعد أن طارت الحمامه !

A simple tale in novella form about Jonathan Noel, a man living in France who suffers from a neurosis that makes him afraid of breaking away from his habitual lifestyle, and who never mingles with others, unless it is absolutely necessary.

Once his routine is broken up by the seemingly harmless appearance of a pigeon outside his apartment door, he nearly breaks down completely.

Though an inferior work to his masterpiece, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer  - my favorite stand-alone novel of all-time - Patrick Süskind tells his short tale with a Master's touch, conveying the right mood, tone, and sense of unease needed to put one's feet right in the character's shoes.

I enjoyed it but feel it necessary to say that this is a book many won't care for. It is based off of one idea, probably could have been a bit better if it were even shorter in length, and with not a lot going on aside from mostly daily routines, it leaves one feeling there could have been more to it, maybe. I expected it to be more of a tragedy, say, in the way Patrick McGrath's Spider was - which in some ways it reminded me of - but that was obviously not the intent of the author's. I must admit, however, that I might have liked it just a little bit more if it had've been more tragic in nature, or at least ended as such.

Not to say he didn't paint a pretty bleak picture. He did. One with a pigeon at the center of it.

Similarly, like Spider, The Pigeon, because of its neurosis elements and its masterful authorial writing stamp clearly embedded in each word and idea, it feels almost Poe-like in nature. Not to say it copies him, but it definitely reflects a side of him many are familiar with.

For those of you interested in reading this, just remember not to expect too much from it. I, myself, am glad to have read this and was excited to find a very good copy of this particular edition, with its wonderful tribute cover to surrealist painter, René Magritte. I found it very fitting both before and after my reading of this!

Depresia este rugina sufletului.
Jonathan Noel este prototipul omului solitar care, în urma unor drame sociale personale, îşi pierde încrederea în societate. Raporturile sale cu fiinţele umane îngheaţă şi contactul cu ceilalţi îi provoacă oroare, astfel încât nu își doreşte decât o existenţa retrasă, detestând orice expunere în public. Micuţa sa garsonieră din Paris şi slujba sa banală de gardian la o bancă oarecare devin clopotul său de sticlă, cortina trasă peste societatea pe care o detestă din răsputeri, iar acest clopot de sticlă este echivalentul paradisului.
Lumea automatismelor sale mărunte şi precise este zguduită însă, într-o dimineaţă, de apariţia unui porumbel cenuşiu, care se aşază pe pragul locuinţei sale şi nu face nimic altceva decât să îl privească. Apariţia acestui porumbel stârneşte în Jonathan groaza, terifierea, panica. Nu va avea un simplu atac de ornitofobie ci respiraţia i se taie, pulsul îi creşte şi, aproape aflat în pragul infarctului, decide să îşi părăsească pentru totdeauna cămăruţa, fugind de terifianta creatură.
Dacă în simbolistica iudeo-creştină porumbelul este alb şi simbolizează Duhul Sfânt, iar în simbolistica păgână porumbelul, tot alb, semnifică dragostea și intimitatea, la Süskind porumbelul cenușiu semnifică ameninţarea, intruziunea, exteriorul, societatea, socializarea. Dorinţa intensă a protagonistului nostru de a părăsi cămăruţa în faţa căreia se află pericolul iminent este dorinţa subtilă, umană, de a fugi de sinele cel artificial construit. Şi, ca orice lucru artificial construit, poate fi, iată, atât de uşor zdruncinat.
Un microroman scurt și amuzant pe care îl vei citi în câteva ceasuri, dar care te va îndemna sa scotocești puțin prin cotloanele eventualului tău clopot de sticlă, dacă ai vreunul.

حكاية قصيرة تُصور الرعب بشكل مخيف حقًا ومذهل خاصة عندما يصف الكاتب شعور الخوف والقلق الذي انتاب جوناثان من حمامة! حمامة يا جوناثان وهل يخاف أحدنا من حمامة التي هي الرمز للسلام والنقاء؟ أي خوف يستقر في أعماقك أيها الرجل المسكين؟ وذُهلت أيضًا عندما وصف جوناثان مشاعره التي تأرجحت بين الغيرة والقرف من تأمله للرجل المتشرد! فالخوف هو ما يستَبِدُّ بنا ويُحيل حياتنا إلى جحيم وترقب مستمر ولا عجب أن كانت السياسات على مر العصور تتعامل مع الشعب بزرع الخوف في أعماقه ليبدأ في التآكل ثم يرضخ ويصبح مواطن جيد. فالخوف من الألم أقسى من الألم ذاته كما أن الخوف من الموت أقسى من الموت بذاته. كذلك أنه لأمر مُرعب أن يعيش الإنسان عمر في هذه الحياة وهو محاط بالفراغ الكامل والروتين الصارم في تفاصيل حياته عمله وتحركاته.

أحد الأسباب التي أحبها في الأدب هو تلك النزعة لدى الأدباء في تسليط الضوء على المساكين،الضعفاء ، الذين هم على الهامش في الحياة الواقعية .و لا أدري السبب الذي يدفع الأدباء لجعل هؤلاء أبطالا لرواياتهم ، هل بدافع الحس المرهف لدى الادباء الذي يجعلهم يشعرون ببؤس هؤلاء فيقرر الأدباء أن يجعلون من أقلامهم أصواتا لهؤلاء الفئة من الناس حين لا صوت لهم في الحياة الواقعية ، أم أن الأدباء يجدون في هذه الفئة بيئة خصبة للخيال و نسج الحكايات حولهم لخصوصيتهم الشديدة الذي يغلب الغموض عليها .

ألجأ للأدب هربا من أخبار المشاهير السطحية الذين نجدهم في كل مكان .أهرب للأدب لأني أثق أني سأتوغل في أعماق النفس الإنسانية و الذي يبرع فيه الأدباء الجيدون بأقلامهم التي تخاطب الوجدان الإنساني و التي تنجح في ترقيق قلب الإنسان و تجعله أكثر إحساسا بغيره من البشر ، و هذا هو ما نحتاجه في هذا الزمان .

"الحمامة" هي رواية بطلها إنسان قرر أن يكتفي بنفسه و يعيش منعزلا لعقود بعد تجارب مرة ذاق خلالها الفقد و الفراق مرات عديدة ، حتى أصبحت محادثة عابرة أو أن تلاقي عيناه بعيني شخص آخر لحظة مرعبة تفقده توازنه و هدوءه النفسي ، ثم تأتي حمامة فتقلب حياته رأسا على عقب.

برع باتريك زوسكيند في التوغل في أعماق هذه الشخصية ، خصوصا عندما تناول ارتباطه بغرفته الذي كان لا يغادرها إلا للعمل ،فصورها بأنها عشيقته فقال :" احتفظت غرفة جوناثان حتى بعد مضي ثلاثين عاما على إقامته فيها بخصائصها و مميزاتها في نفسه كونها جزيرته الآمنة في هذا العالم المضطرب ،حصنه المنيع و ملجأه و عشيقته، نعم عشيقته!فقد كانت تعانقه دائما بحنان في كل مرة يعود إليها ليلا ،تدفئه و تحميه و تغذي روحه وجسده، كانت دائما هنا حين يحتاجها و لم تهجره أبدا. لقد كانت الشيء الوحيد في حياته الذي أثبت أنه يمكن الوثوق به."

‘At the time the pigeon affair overtook him, unhinging his life from one day to the next, Jonathan Noel, already past fifty, could look back over a good twenty-year period of total uneventfulness and would never have expected anything of importance could ever overtake him again – other than death some day.’

‘The Pigeon’ is an incredibly short story detailing a day (albeit a rather momentous day) in the life of Jonathan Noel. Jonathan leads a secluded and private life as a bank security guard in Paris. He enjoys the life he has made for himself and is perfectly content with it continuing as such for his remaining years; however, on his way to work one morning this all comes collapsing down around him as he discovers a pigeon on his front porch. As soon as the pigeon entered his life, his life literally came crumbling apart in his mind. All of his carefully made plans became as fragile as a snowflake.

‘…but he suddenly no longer saw himself – that is, he no longer saw himself as a part of the world surrounding him. It was rather, as if for a few seconds he were standing far away, outside it, and were regarding this world through the wrong end of a telescope.’

I became an instant fan of Patrick Süskind after stumbling upon his novel ‘Pefume’. It left such a permanent imprint on me and is still one of my favorite books to date. I’m not sure why I never looked into whether or not he had any additional works, but after embarking on my ‘1001 Books to Read Before I Die’ reading challenge I discovered ‘The Pigeon’ as one of those 1001. Overjoyed, I knew I had to have it.

Patrick Süskind’s writing is so thoroughly impressionable that earlier this afternoon I saw a pigeon on the side of the road and had to suppress a shiver as Jonathan’s fears flooded my mind. Mildly amusing, but, I’m not sure I’ll be able to look at a pigeon the same again. His descriptions of the pigeon and Jonathan’s instant anxiety over the pigeon were immediately understandable even though, looking at the bigger picture, it seemed as if he made a fuss over nothing. I’ll admit, I laughed at first because it seemed quite absurd, but as the story progressed you can see now it’s not just the pigeon that affected poor Jonathan in that manner; it was just the catalyst to a series of events that disrupted his painstakingly normal existence.

I’m giving ‘The Pigeon’ 5 stars for one reason and one reason only (and it’s not because it’s as great a story as Perfume because it isn’t): because he’s a truly amazing writer. I will read anything written by Patrick Süskind. It’s just such a shame that there aren’t more novels of his in existence to read.

‏‏الإبداع الفني يتجلى في أيسر الروايات طرحاً وأعقدها فكرة .. لا يكفي للكاتب حشو السرد بالأحداث .. بل تعميقها إلى درجة يصعب الإحاطة بها إلا من تذوقها .. ومعرفة مذاق بعض الزوايا على الأقل !



‏‏الحمــــــامــــة رواية داخلية .. مفعمة بالنبضات والأحاسيس والتناقضات والعقد.

تدور الحبكة حول ‏‏"الروتينية الفلسفية"؛ تلك التي تعزلك عن الماضي والحاضر وعن الحياة بكل تحدياتها لتجد نفسك كالسباح الماهر والذي لا يدرك أنه يعرف السباحة ولا في أي قعر حُطّ لجسده القدرة على التجديف والحركة، ولكن في بؤرة ما من إدراك معزول يؤمن بمهاراته.


‏Silent events ; ومتكلمة كذلك، قد لا تقول عن يوم "جوناثان" فحسب بل عن أيام الكثير الباهتة، تلك التي لا تحمل ذكريات الماضي الثقيلة، بل رواسب وأفكار مترسخة من سن الطفولة والشباب.


‏The highest conflict of the novel ; لحظة الإنطلاق بدافع الخوف، لحظة التجرد من الواقع والخروج بتوتر نحو اللحظة الآنية المشحونة بالقلق، "الحمامة" تثير الرعب في نفس ذلك العجوز، ليجد نفسه في يوم مختلف مع استنزاف استثنائي.

متى ما تزعزع أمن الذات، حتى خرجت عن المألوف، عن بوتقة الآن، ومنطقة الراحة ! ...

‏‏سماء "جوناثان" ملبدة، غائمة .. كانت بحاجة إلى حمامة، وميض برق، صوت صاخب .. أوحتى مطر يبلل الأعماق علّ تربتها تهتز وتضطرب !

الفكرة حلوة، فكرة تجسيد المخاوف الإنسانية والقلق بأنواعه. لكن الوصف كان ممل والحشو زائد جدا، كان ممكن تكون نصف عدد الصفحات دي والفكرة توصل عادي.

For fans of Kafka, this one is for you. It's written in deceptively simply language and full of paranoia and self-loathing. The main character seems at first forgettable but quickly descends into a personal and claustrophobic hell.

I'm not fully sure why this was the perfect book for the moment, but I was completely absorbed. This book is perfect for waiting at the airport or any impersonal place where you feel alone.
