I prefer this one to Blindness.

Ensaio sobre a Lucidez tem um teor político bem forte, com 3 partidos representados - o partido da direita (o p.d.d), o partido do meio (p.d.m.) e o partido da esquerda (p.d.e) - e o que Saramago faz é estereotipar ao máximo os membros destes três partidos. O livro tem, assim, algumas partes bem cómicas e com muita ironia (claro!). Apesar de Saramago ser comunista, trata todos os partidos de forma igual, e o livro é uma crítica a todos os políticos que continuam a candidatar-se a cargos políticos e que nem sequer equacionam a ideia de conversar com os eleitores para tentar perceber a realidade deles.

A população desta capital afirma, em alto e bom som, "voto em branco porque nenhum dos candidatos me representa, é o meu direito", "o país está na miséria, e vocês querem que continuemos a votar nos mesmos candidatos que nos deixaram na miséria?" e o pior de tudo é que os políticos não percebem que as pessoas votaram em branco porque estão descontentes com os partidos actuais. Estão tão agarrados ao poder e tão desfasados da população que não entendem, mesmo com 80% de votos em branco, que são precisos novos políticos e novas ideias. Actual, não é?

Como qualquer livro de Saramago, este não é fácil de ler pela angústia que carrega. O final é das coisas mais tristes que já li, senti-me completamente sem chão. Depois de tudo o que aconteceu, chegamos ao fim da história e... ficamos devastados. Meu Deus, só de pensar já fico aqui c0m uma lágrima no olho.

O livro está conectado com o Ensaio sobre a Cegueira (não acho que seja uma continuação!), já que a história acontece na mesma cidade quatro anos depois e há algumas personagens que voltam neste livro. Por isso, não leiam este antes de ler o Ensaio sobre a Cegueira, até porque este último é absolutamente genial e todos deveriam ler este livro maravilhoso e que é dos meus favoritos da vida! ❤

Quanto ao Ensaio sobre a Lucidez, apesar de não se ter tornado um favorito, é, ainda assim, um livro fenomenal, porque é Saramago e tudo o que este homem escreveu é genial, e por toda a discussão política e conversas entre os membros do Governo. Todos os livros de Saramago dão asas à reflexão, deixam-nos a pensar que tipo de cidadão somos, que tipo de ser humano somos e queremos ser.

Durante a leitura pensei várias vezes "é verdade, isto podia acontecer agora em qualquer democracia do mundo" e isso é bastante assustador. Saramago demonstra que os governantes e políticos amam tanto o poder que, para manter esse mesmo poder, agem de forma totalitária sempre que puderem, tudo em nome da democracia. Cabe aos eleitores serem conscientes e terem lucidez.

Το ξαναδιάβασα μετά το "Περί τυφλώσεως" με το οποίο και συνδέονται. Όχι μόνο σαν ιστορία αλλά και σαν σκέψη, σαν λογική σ΄ έναν τρελό κόσμο που οικοδομείται από την λεγόμενη σύγχρονη πραγματικότητα. Η ιδιότυπη γραφή του σε βουλιάζει σε μια δίνη από την οποία αδυνατείς να ξεφύγει. Για τον απλό λόγο ότι είσαι ήδη μέρος αυτού του κόσμου. Οδηγείσαι στο αύριο μέσα από την τυφλότητα σου, μέσα από την λευκή ψήφο σε μια πορεία που σε οδηγεί στην τρέλα... Συστήνω να διαβαστούν και τα δύο βιβλία, το ένα μετά το άλλο αρχής γενομένης βέβαια από το "Περί Τυφλώσεως". Μήπως και βρούμε το φως μας....

In this sequel to Saramago’s dystopian book Blindness, a large majority of the populace has cast a blank ballot in the parliamentary election. The first half follows the bureaucrats as they try to make sense of the anomaly, eventually deciding it is a plot against the government. The second half shifts to the search for a scapegoat and remaining government officials attempting a mass deception.

It is a book about power and what people are willing to do to remain in power. It is about the need to maintain a moral compass. It seemed almost surreal reading this book while watching the bizarre events following the 2020 US Presidential election.

Saramago uses his razor-sharp wit to satirize spin-doctoring, bureaucracy, abuse of authority, and corruption. It is written in Saramago’s usual style – extremely long sentences, lengthy paragraphs, and dialogue embedded in the text. I could have used more breaks for the eyes, but I knew what to expect as all Saramago’s works are written in the same manner. He inserts wry wit, and his satire is well crafted.

To obtain the best experience, read Blindness first. These are cautionary tales and worth the time invested. Saramago poses questions about the fragility of social structures, which are, unfortunately, all too relevant to today’s world.

Essa frase resume perfeitamente tudo o que o Saramago nos quer passar em todas as suas obras e essa frase resume tudo o que eu aprendi sozinha vivendo minha vida.
Acho que se alguém está por um fio de perder toda sua fé na humanidade tem que passar longe do Saramago, ele te amassa, te pisa, te destrói e te joga fora junto com todas as suas esperanças.
Você se pergunta quase até a página 200 onde está a continuação de Ensaio sobre a cegueira, mas quando você começa ver os personagens chegando você também começa a querer descer do mundo e não acreditar no que está acontecendo. Você não tem vontade mais de compactuar com qualquer tipo de coisa que envolva o ser humano! Você quer fugir dessa bagunça! Você quer desconhecer todo ser humano que já possa ter conhecido! Você que correr!
Saramago você me destrói, e eu te amo por isso!

Σαν άλλο 1984, σε πιο light μορφή, το βιβλίο εξιστορεί μία φανταστικη εξέλιξη της δημοκρατίας μας που κάλλιστα θα μπορούσε να γίνει πραγματικότητα.. Θα προτιμούσα να είχε εστιασει στην αντίδραση της κοινωνίας, πάρα σε αυτήν της κυβέρνησης. Παρόλα αυτά, είναι ένα εξαιρετικό βιβλίο.

Κάθε φορά ο Σαραμάγκου με γραπώνει και δε με αφήνει μέχρι το τέλος της ιστορίας. Δεν μπορώ να το κατανοήσω πλήρως πώς γίνεται αυτό, αλλά οι δυστοπικές, απρόσωπες, καταιγιστικές ιστορίες του πάντα με αφήνουν σοκαριστικά μουδιασμένο. Στην ιστορία του βιβλίου περιγράφεται με ενάργεια η συντριπτική πίεση του συστήματος επί του ατόμου, αλλά και η ελπιδοφόρα αντίσταση του ανθρώπου, ως μονάδα και ως σύνολο. Αντίσταση αποτελεί πρωτίστως η στάση ζωής μας και οι πράξεις μας στα μικρά καθημερινά γεγονότα.

نعم.. فالحدث الرئيسي للرواية هو شيء مستحيل الحدوث مثل رواية العمى.. لكن كل أحداث الرواية واقعية.. واقعية جدا.. ترى فيها كل تفاصيل الحكم في دول العالم الثالث.. حتى النهاية المفاجئة للرواية هي نهاية منطقية.. ومهما تغيرت الاوجه إلا أنها كلها تظل فاسدة..
رواية جميلة.. ومضحكة.. ومحيرة.. وحزينة.. وقاسية!

That's an astonishing political fiction by the 1998 Nobel Laureate for Literature.
It is about a capital where the inhabitants voted "white," with more than 80%. What will the government do? Are we looking for the culprits with the help of spies and informants? Are we trying an advertising campaign? How about sending the army? But is not voting according to one's choice an inalienable right?
It is filled with humor and caricatures of politicians and full of reflections on democracy, citizens' rights and duties, and even the meaning of life.
Everything would be delightful and accessible if it weren't for the particular writing. Indeed, at Saramago, we avoid white; we occupy all the space with characters, and there are very few paragraphs. Dashes or quotes never accompany the many dialogues; commas separate the lyrics. These lyrics give the text an impression of opacity, which, unfortunately, puts off the reader. Pity!
When it's our turn to go to the polls, faced with shenanigans and dubious electoral promises, we often choose, with clarity, the slightest wrong candidate. Is it better than voting "white"?
