Ensayo sobre la lucidez = Seeing (Blindness #2), José Saramago

Seeing is a novel by Nobel Prize-winning Portuguese author José Saramago. It was published in Portuguese in 2004, and it is a sequel to one of his most famous works, Blindness.

Seeing is set in the same unnamed country featured in Blindness. The story begins with a parliamentary election, in which the majority (83%) of the populace cast blank ballots.

The first half of the story focuses on the struggles of the government and its various nameless members as they try to simultaneously understand and destroy the amorphous non-movement of blank-voters. Some of the characters from Blindness appear in the second half of the novel, including 'the doctor' and 'the doctor's wife', and the 'dog of tears' now with the name, Constant.

José Saramago’dan okuduğum 3. kitap ve tüm okuduklarım da çok etkileyiciydi. Görmek kitabını okumadan önce mutlaka Körlük kitabını okumuş olmanız gerekiyor. Çünkü büyük bir bölümünde orada geçen olaylarla ve karakterlerle bağlantısı var.
Beyaz oy pusulası salgını var bu kez de. Yine Saramago iktidarı, yöneticileri, halkı, emniyet teşkilatını bir ülke içinde gerçekleşen olağandışı bir durumda ayrıntılı bir kurguyla karşımıza çıkarıyor. Bilmek görmek demektir cümlesi kitabı bitirdiğinizde çok daha anlamlı olacak sizin için. Distopya diyemiyorum çünkü maalesef ülkemizde de çok benzer olayları yaşıyoruz, şahit oluyoruz. Παρά τη χαζομάρα μου να ξεκινήσω από το Περί Φωτισεως και όχι από το Περί τυφλότητος, με αποτέλεσμα να φάω spoilers, δεν μπορώ να μην θαυμάσω την ζοφερή φαντασία του Σαραμαγκου. Τι κι αν είναι απαισιόδοξος; Αγαπώ τη φαντασία και τη γραφή του!!!!!

به واقع دنباله خیلی ضعیفی برای کتاب کوری بود

Το περί τυφλότητας μου άρεσε περισσότερο η αλήθεια, αυτό που με κούρασε εδώ ήταν οι πολλές περιγραφές, σε σημείο που πολλές φορές διάβαζα και έβλεπα μπλα μπλα μπλα!
Ενώ το θέμα είχε ενδιαφέρον στο σύνολο το βιβλίο που άφησε μέτριες εντυπώσεις!

Seeing is believing…

The last time I read Blindness and then Seeing, I made the mistake of reading the second volume right after the first. The merciless vehemence of Blindness had too strong a resonance and made me literally blind for the underhanded elegance and wit of Seeing.

I avoided this mistake this time and let some months pass between the two books and I have to say that on this new visit to the unnamed country, where the people have no names, where the spoken word merges with the text and where no paragraph marks give the fevered eye of the reader a rest, I probably liked the second volume even better than the first.

Imagine there’s an election and no one’s going to vote.

That’s the premise. In a local election in the capital, over three-quarters of voters turn in a blank, i.e. white, ballot. Along the lines of the pitcher goes so often to the well that it is broken at last, many disenchanted with politics seem to have simply had enough and therefore refused to vote for any of the three parties (The Right, The Left, The Centre). The government is at a loss. They interpret the election results as an act of revolt, suspect a conspiracy, speak of torpedoing the democratic order and react with partly grotesque and absurd measures. Although every single voter has the legal right not to vote the People in Power are clearly not willing to rectify the obvious loss of confidence by voters.

Exaggerations are good illustrations!

The characters in this book are heavily overdrawn. Almost all politicians and other state officials are corrupt to the core, from the smallest election officer to various ministers to the head of state and then down again to the military, police and secret services. Almost nobody tries to solve the real problems, but is kowtowing to superiors and dishing it out to subordinates. Those are cardboard characters, on the edge of caricatures, stereotypical to the n-th degree. But under Saramago’s magical pen, a first-rate political satire is created, where you just can’t help but love it & laugh about it and say: Yes, it’s the same in my country, in my district or city.

The end of the world as we know it‽

Saramago himself was a convinced and unorthodox leftist all his life, but this can only be felt to a very limited extent when reading, and in any case, his target is not a particular political camp. He shows here in a skilful way and as a cautionary example how a somewhat functioning society can collapse in the event of an unforeseen danger. In the first volume it is the white blindness that suddenly overcomes the people as a contagious pandemic and brings civilisation to the brink of destruction. In Seeing it is the people themselves who almost cause the collapse of democracy, because the politicians are too corrupt and paranoid to approach their voters.

Any similarities to today’s pandemics, unrest, corrupt systems and possible consequences to societies are, as always, purely coincidental.

کتاب های ژوزه ساراماگو خلاقیتی دارند که نفس آدم رو بند میاره . اگه کتاب کوری ساراماگو رو خونده باشین ( که پیشنهاد می کنم حتما قبل از خوندن این کتاب اونو بخونین ) باز هم توی این کتاب منتظر غافلگیری هستین . منتظرین تا نویسنده برگ برنده شو رو کنه . منتظرین تا باز هم یه اتفاق عجیب بیفته که هیچ وقت در هیچ کجای دنیا نیفتاده . کتاب از روز رای گیری شروع می شه . اولاش یه ذره آدم حوصله اش سر می ره . هی حس می کنه خب بعد . خب پس ک�� جادوی ساراماگو . ولی دیگه از اواسط کتاب دیوانه وار می بلعین صفحه ها . خیلی کتاب خوبیه . برای کتاب خون کردن کتاب به درد بخوریه . و برای اونایی که اهل کتاب هستن یک کتاب رویایی . البته بازم تاکید می کنم که اول کوری رو بخونین .

Quattro anni dopo l’epidemia di cecità che colpì la città, accade che, il giorno delle elezioni, l’83% degli votanti compie un atto sovversivo scegliendo scheda bianca. Cecità? No, ci hanno visto benissimo.
Ma anche il Potere ci vede benissimo, e non vuole certo che vengano messi in pericolo il sistema democratico e la stabilità del governo.
Bisogna arrivare alla testa della maledetta tenia che ha cospirato contro il governo, trascinarla alla luce e infliggerle il castigo che merita. Occorre ristabilire l’ordine e riportare alla ragione.
C’è sempre qualcuno da accusare. Un colpevole ci deve essere. Ci sarà. Perché sarebbe davvero un fallimento dire che un accusato è innocente se tutto è concertato per fare di un innocente un colpevole.
Un’analisi lucida e feroce su quanto il Potere, privo di scrupoli e morale, possa fare pur di annientare chi osa dissentire, chi osa ribellarsi, chi osa disobbedire o dire “No”.
Risuonano le parole del commissario: “Ho imparato in questo mestiere che chi comanda non solo non si ferma davanti a ciò che noi definiamo assurdità, ma se ne serve per intorpidire le coscienze e annullare la ragione”.
Fogli scendono volteggiando nell’aria, preludio all’amarezza che verrà.

Lo so, José, che non c’è peggior cieco di chi non vuol vedere. Però… Ci sono rimasta male. Tanto.

P.S. Preferibile leggerlo dopo “Cecità”, per i riferimenti alla vicenda e per i protagonisti che vengono qui riproposti.

الديمقراطية في عُرف الحكومات هي أنها تعطيك مطلق الحرية في أن تقول نعم، أو لا
لكنها ستعاقبك أشد العقاب إذا كان قولك هو لا!
تُعاقب على استخدام حقك.
اقتل نفسك قبل أن يسألونك إن كُنت مازلت حيّاً

دائماً وأبداً
لا تعرف الشعوب مصلحتها، ولا تملك القدرة على التخطيط والتصويت له
هذا في عُرف الحكومات أيضاً
وكأننا بتصويتنا لهم، وإعطائهم الحق في إدارة شئوننا
نعطيهم أيضاً الحق في تقرير مصيرنا نيابة عنا!

أبدع سارماجو في الغوص في سيكولوجية الحكومات فرداً فرداً
ليس فقط من خلال الحوارات التي كانت تدور في مجالسهم
لكن أيضاً من خلال حديث كُل مسئول منهم مع نفسه، خواطره، وتحدياته
إذا كان هناك ثمة شيء يستحق الذكر في هذه الرواية، من بين جميع أحداثها
هو عبقرية وإبداع سارماجو في تصوير طريقة تفكير وأسلوب تعامل الحكومات مع شعوبها
ومن الواضح أنها ليست فقط مشكلة الشعوب العربية مع حكومتها
لكن مشكلة الشعوب الغربية أيضاً
السلطة هي السلطة، في كُل مكان نفوذها يُعمي!
لكننا لسنا في حاجة إلى أن نكون عمياناً حتى لانعرف إلى أين نذهب

فرق شاسع ما بين رواية العمى ورواية البصيرة
رواية العمى بأحداثها الغزيرة والسريعة والمتلاحقة
تلك الملحمة التي قرأتها بعيون منبهرة ومفتوحة على اتساعها
لم أجد من رائحتها أي شيء في رواية البصيرة
رواية تكاد تكون بلا أحداث، تطويل زائد عن الحد
وتيرة أحداث بطيئة ومملة، كُنت أجاهد لاستكمالها
وبدلاً من قرأتها بعيون مُنبهرة كما حدث في رواية العمى
كُنت اقرأها بخمول وفتور في انتظار النهاية
أو حدث مشوق، أو حتى حديث بين مسئولي الحكومة لأنه هو الشيء الوحيد الذي دفعني لاستكمالها
أعتقد أنه لولا ارتباط هذه الرواية على أنها الجزء الثاني من رواية العمى
لما تحمست لقرأتها!
العمى مُرهقة في أحداثها الكئيبة التي تعتصر قلبك
والبصيرة مُرهقة لكنها مُرهقة في أحداثها المملة التي تعتصرك شخصياً لحين تنتهي منها
وهذه آفة قراءة العمى كبداية مع سارماجو
ستستمر في مقارنتها بكل رواية تقرأها له

تمّت

رواية البصيرة تبدأ بجملة
"قال الكلب: علينا أن نعوى" من كتاب الأصوات

وتنتهي بجملة:
"أنا أبغض عواء الكلاب"

وبين هاتين الجملتين يبدع ساراماجو
يتحدث عن الحكومات التي تشبه لحكوماتنا وأوطاننا
عن سياسة نعم للابد
عن الديمقراطية المزيفة

أثناء قرائتي للرواية تذكرت ثورة يناير
والخطاب العاطفي
يا الله كأن ساراماجوا كان يقرأ المستقبل ويعرف ما سيحدث بالوطن العربي
حتي في أدق التفاصيل.

لا أتحدث عن أحداث مثلما فعل عز الدين شكري فشير في باب الخروج
ولكن عن العقليات المتعفنة التي امتلأت بها أوطاننا العربية
عن الحكام الذين لا يعرفون شيء غير القوة والعنف
عن الداخلية التي تعتقد أنها تمثل الله في الأرض
عن الظلم والقهر والضياع

أحزنتني النهاية ولكنها تصدق مقولة نجيب محفوظ أن من يجني ثمار الثورة الجبناء
وقد كان جنى ثمار الظلم الجبناء أنفسهم وهم الظالمين.

ساراماجوا أنت جميل ، ربنا يرضى عنك :)

ليس ما يجعل شخصًا ما مميـزًا فى مجاله هو الموهبـة فقـط ، ولكنها الموهبة عندما تصل حدّ الجنـون ..
لطالما تساءلت .. مين أين يأتى ساراماجو بمجتمعاته الخيالية تلك ؟ .. كيف يستطيع نسج قصةٍ يختلط فيهـا كل شئ لدرجة الحيـرة ؟

يخلق ساراماجو فى كتاباته ، دائمًا ، حالة من ( الوعى الجمعى ) الذى يحرك المجتمع ككتلة واحدة تجاه أمـرٍ ما ، او تجاه حدثٍ غريب ..
ففى ( انقطاعات الموت ) يتخيّل الكاتب .. ماذا لو أحس الموت بالملل يومًا ف قرر التوقف ؟ ما الذى سيحدث ؟ وما تأثيـر ذلك على أشخاص هذا المجتمع ؟
يتساءل فى ( العمى ) .. ماذا لو أصبح الجميع عميانًا ؟ ماذا يمكن أن يحدث فى مجتمع من العميان ؟ كيف يتعامل الناس مع هذه الظاهرة ؟
يتساءل هنا فى ( البصيرة ) .. ماذا لو قرر الشعب أن يتحدى الحكومة وأّلّا ينتخب أحدًا ؟ كيف تتصرف الحكومة حيال هذا ؟ وماذا يكون رد فعل الشعب تجاه ما فعلته الحكومة ؟
أسئلة قد تراها أنت تافهة وسخيفة ، ولكن ساراماجو يمسك بها بحكمة وينسج منها رداءًا متينًا رائعَ الجمال ..

إجابات هذه الأسئلة ، والحق يقال ، غير منطقية ، وقد تشعـر أنهـا غيـر طبيعية .. ولكن من قال أن ساراماجو طبيعيًا أو منطقيًا ؟ ألم نقل منذ قليل أن الابداع الذى لا يتميـز بالجنون لا يكون إبداعًا ؟

شئ آخر يميز ساراماجو هو إنه يحكى الرواية بأسلوب قارئ وليس راوٍ ، فتجده يتساءل أحيانًا عما سيحدث فى الرواية بعد قليل ويحدّث نفسه أحيانًا بخواطر تدورُ فى ذهنه ..

ما أرهقنى بحق هو أسلوب السـرد .. عبارات طويلة تقطع الأنفاس .. الكثير والكثير من الجمل الاعتراضية التى تستدعى ذهنًا حاضرًا لاجتيازها ..
رأيت هذا من قبل فى ( انقطاعات الموت ) واعتقدت أنه خطأُ ترجمة ، ولكنى وجدته هنا أيضًا ..
يمكنك إجتياز كل هذا والتمتع بها مع قليلٍ من الصبـر ، ولكن إن لم تكن من الصابرين فلا أنصحك أن تجرّب ..

There is a best time and there is a worst time to read any particular book.

This was the time, best and worst, to read "Seeing".

Like with "Blindness", the original titles are something like: "Essay on Blindness" and "Essay on Lucidity". There is a nuance in the original that is lost in translation.

I began reading this when a State of Alarm was declared in the country where I live. During the first pages of this fable a State of Alarm is declared in the hypothetical country (in our minds related to Portugal, but only once made explicit, tangentially) in which the story takes place. It was spooky to be living in these parallel worlds: fictional and true, and real and untrue.

Worst of times to read it because the first half of the book read like the political jargon to which we have been submitted during the incompetent handling of the Covid pandemic. If in the current confinement I was looking for my reading as my comfortable area in which I could nurture sanity, I found that this novel was brilliantly, and exasperatingly, echoing the world from which I was trying to escape. This was not Kafka, for there was no maddening logic building an impossible and blockading castle. This was just horrible political drivel of the same putrefactive quality with which we are lately surrounded.

Hard going it was. All those words and the way they combined.

Then the second part, when characters appear and the anonymity of the first part softens, and we recognize familiar characters from Blindness,  a novel written nine years earlier but whose setting corresponded to four years prior to Seeing , I felt like I had arrived at a welcoming haven, where one of the most extraordinary personages in literature seemed to be receiving me with her lucid warmth. But to no avail, for then those instigating words came again, with all their might, for, as the narrator says they can be heavy: a plastic bag stuffed with words is easier to carry on one’s back than the world.  La carga es pesada, nada menos que una bolsa abarrotada de palabras más fácil sería llevar el mundo a las espaldas . These words prompt the final and unexpected outcome.

For words could take any shape and even if one of the most interesting characters thinks that it is also with words, lucky words appropriately gathered and combined, that the situation could be saved  Esas palabras que, probablemente, tal como se le presentaron, nadie las había dicho antes, esas palabras tan tenido la fortuna de no perderse unas de las otras, han tenido quien las reuniera, quien sabe si este mundo no sería un poco más decente si supiéramos cómo juntar unas cuantas palabras que andan por ahí sueltas…. He also dreams that productive words, like laborious bees, can make sense and bring lucidity to all  Soñó con una nube de palabras que huían y se dispersaban mientras él las iba persiguiendo con una red de atrapar mariposas y les rogaba Deteneos, por favor, no os mováis, esperadme. Entonces de repente, las palabras se detuvieron y se juntaron, se amontonaron unas sobre otras como un enjambre de abejas a la espera de una colmena donde dejarse caer, y él, con una exclamación de alegría, lanzó la red. .

But no, the syrup of disintegrating language that we have to suffer now, and which Saramago so lucidly recreates, has the final and tragic upper hand. Just like now.
