Το βιβλίο παρουσιάζει ό,τι υπόσχεται ο τίτλος....μια άβυσσο. Κι αν γράφτηκε σχεδόν ένα αιώνα πριν, είναι από εκείνα τα βιβλία που ξεπερνούν τα χρονικά πλαίσια κ ζωγραφίζουν ζοφερά,ακόμη κ σήμερα, την κοινωνία μας να τρέχει ανεξέλεγκτα μέσα σε τρένο δίχως οδηγό. Δεν έχουν αλλάξει και πολύ τα πράγματα από τότε, εκτός ίσως από το ότι βαφτίσαμε ως ελεύθερη επιλογή εκείνα που άλλοι ,κάποτε,καταδίκαζαν ως ανηθικα-ωστοσο σε τίποτα δεν βοήθησε... Και όπως ο Κεστνερ, με τον συμπαθέστατοι Φάμπιαν ,αντικρύζει την άβυσσο του ολέθρου, που δρομολογεί ο ναζισμός,έτσι κι εμείς σήμερα στεκόμαστε μπροστά σε μια άβυσσο εξίσου τρομακτική.
Η γραφή του Κεστνερ, ξεχωριστή. Παραπλανητικά απλή, με χιούμορ,σύντομες φράσεις, φτιάχνει εικόνες κ αποκαλύπτει με ακρίβεια,την ψυχή των ηρώων του.
Διαβάζεται εύκολα μα είναι πικρό και τραγικά επίκαιρο....

"Fabian" hat einen seltsam zeitlosen Charakter.
Die Hauptfigur ist mehr ein Beobachtender als ein Lebender, ein unsichtbarer Außenseiter. Letzlich ertrinkt er dann an seinem selbstständigen wie selbstlosem Denken.
Und wahrhscheinlich kann man dieses Buch nur verstehen, wenn man ihm das nachfühlen kann. Für alle anderen scheint es zu Unrecht Zynismus.

Ένα αριστούργημα της εποχής του. Εξαιρετικό σε σχέση με την κοινωνία του Βερολίνου εκείνη την περίοδο, δημιουργεί πολύ έντονες εικόνες και αφήνει μια γλυκόπικρη αίσθηση.
Μου ταίριαξε πολύ με το στίχο του Έλιοτ: Αυτός είναι ο τρόπος που τελειώνει ο κόσμος, όχι με ένα πάταγο αλλά με ένα λυγμό.
Πολύ ωραίο ανάγνωσμα!

Beim 2. Mal nun die Originalausgabe des Romans gelesen. Er spielt in Berlin am Ende der 1920er Jahre mit der schlechten wirtschaftlichen Lage, Arbeitslosigkeit und dem Absturz ins Dritte Reich. Man feiert in entsprechenden Etablissements. Herrliche Szenen zwischen Jakob Fabian und Stephan Labude. Als dieser die Untreue seiner Freundin bemerkt und wegen einer Bemerkung, die als Scherz gedacht war, sich erschießt kippt die Handlung. Perspektivlos ist nun auch Fabian, er kommt aus Versehen zu Tode. Ich mag diesen Roman auch nach dem 2. Lesen.

Ach Labude

An unsettling book to read right now. I started it while traveling in Germany--in Dusseldorf, which in 2016 is very different than Berlin of the 20s. But the book feels very familiar, with its chaotic background and Fabian, the narrator, struggling to support himself and find meaning. His rent (for a room in a boarding house) is 40% of his pay, which sounds familiar.

Towards the end, he's back home and runs into an old classmate who's joined up with the Stahlhelm (I think it's a nationalistic precurser to the Nazis). When he tells the friend they will fail and bring down Germany with them, the friend responds, "Then we shall all go under, and to hell with it."

Fabian responds, "Where do you get the audacity to condemn 60 million people to ruin, simply because you're fond of a scrap and possess the sense of honor of an insulted turkey-cock?"

I sure hope our 2016 turkey-cock gets soundly defeated in three weeks.

'Öyle mi?' Arkadaşının önüne dikilen Labude, iki eliyle onun palto yakasından tuttu. 'Buna rağmen buna cüret etmeleri gerekmez mi?'

Beeindruckend aktuell! Am Anfang fiel es mir etwas schwer in das Buch zu finden, aber dann hat mich Erich Kästner mit seiner Gesellschaftskritik gefesselt. Das Ende hat mich sehr berührt und mir viele Parallelen zu unserer Zeit verdeutlicht.

I've had to read several books for the university so far, but I enjoyed this the most. It's cleverly done and I feel that it could be applied to today's society as well, so it has a sense of timelessness to it. Also Erich Kästner's writing style is exceptionally engaging and wonderful and I definitely have to read more books by him.

The only thing I ended up disliking was the final page. A child falls into the water, and Fabian goes to save the child, very heroic. And then: "Fabian ertrank. Er konnte leider nicht schwimmen." (Fabian drowned. Sadly, he couldn't swim.) I was just sitting there like: "..what?" It's quite a funny way to end the book.. and it's probably good to have it end so suddenly, I think it makes the confusion depicted in the book only more powerful: like, Fabian couldn't find his way, and this was his place in the world. But at first I just felt confused and blank and I was surprised that the book would end like *that*.

I found the book a very powerful read and I would definitely recommend it.
