I picked this up at random from the shelves at the library. I wasn’t disappointed. A brilliant and powerful ending, and an easy to read overview of Iran’s modern history, which was really interesting (and shocking).

سيرة ممتعة خاصة أنها تحدثت من وجهة نظر إيرانية عاشت الأحداث في إيران ولم تهاجر وكونها من الشعب (على العكس من فرح ديبا في مذكراتها)، فتحكي عن ثورة مصدق وحكم الشاه رضا بهلوي المبذر للأموال، وبعدها عن الثورة الخمينية والتي كانت هي شخصيًا من المتحمسين لها، ثم عن سلسلة الإعدامات والاغتيالات، وعن احت��از الرهائن في السفارة الأمريكية، وإيران كونترا، وتعامل النظام مع المرأة، وهجرة الكثير من الإيرانيين عن إيران إلى دول كثيرة حول العالم..

كأن يدي على قلبي مع كل كلمة. أنا حقًا معجبة بشيرين. معجبة بالإصرار..بالأمل..بالنظال..وكل ما فعلته. الأشياء الصغيرة التي نفعلها بطموحات كبيرة وأحلامٍ نصب أعيننا تصيرُ واقعا لا محالة مهما طال الزمن. شخصية شيرين شخصية نسويّة مرجعية. إن امرأة مثلها يجب لها أن تخلد وهذا ما حصل معها. أسلوب الكتاب مشوّق. الترجمة جميلة. الكتاب مليء بالأحداث والمفاجآت وخالٍ من السرد والإطالة الغير لازمة. كل كلمة كانت في موضعها تمامًا كما يجب. الموقف المهول في حين رجعتها وتكريمها لامسني، لامسني جدًا وكنت على وشك دمعة. أن ترى ما فعلت طوال حياتك لتبتسم مطمئنًا خاليًا من احساس التيه. لهذا وجدت في الحياة. ما كنت لأقتبس شيئًا من الكتاب فأغلب الفقرات اقتباس مطوّل!
أعتقد أن هذا الكتاب مرجعيٌّ أيضاً لكل البلاد العربية/المسلمة..لكل الربيع العربي.
هذا الكتاب مما تجب قراءته حتمًا وقطعًا.

this is a well-written, moving memoir. for anyone who thinks it may be pandering to the west and delivers only what it wants to hear, it really doesn't. not a deal-breaker obviously but just something i noticed about the writing: the author does not seem to be very acquainted with marxist political thinking or perspectives, which somewhat comes across when she writes about iran's poor (she herself is of a semi-aristocratic background). i won't say it's outright awful but it is bizarrely classist in a way that conveyed this person has not reflected too much about this subject matter. it doesn't make me respect her any less - she has sacrificed a great deal to take up the causes she does. it just somewhat undermines how some read this book as containing the voice of the "iranian people" or something.

ولكن هل يمكن أن تعطي لامرأة ليس فقط ألم ولكن قهر وظلم وتهميش وتستطيع أن تتحدي كل هذه الصعوبات في بلد مثل إيران و تحاول- ليس فقط أن تخلق السلام- ولكن أيضاً أن تفوز بجائزة نوبل للسلام...؟
لا أظن يوجد مثلها الكثير..إنها السيدة الشجاعة،القوية .. شيرين عبادي التي كتبت هذا الكتاب

If it was for the courage and effort, I would rank with a 5 stars. The author is by far a vert intelligent and educated person but my intrigue appeared as she seemed to blaim friends or acquintances for being apolitical when during the entire book she did not make any clear political statement but a very blurry one. Also it is strange to me that during the Iraq war no relatives of her were sent to the battle field. This is not the only book that I've read about Iran but at from the very beginning she proved to be against of the Pavlavi regime and chose a world of no freedom and narrowness of Khomeini. I admit I am not in the position of criticise any type of regime of Iran as I have not lived there nor those times but it was a clear difference of progress in many directions destroyed by the 80's regime where freedom was the last word describe that period of time and yet no clear opinion was made...... i wish I would find out some of the outcomes of the legal cases she said she offered to represent.

Shirin Ebadi a urcat Golgota; din inchisorile unui regim fundamentalist pana la Premiul Nobel pentru Pace si recunoasterea mondiala.
Jurnalul sau, scris intr-un stil impecabil, este o fresca acuzatoare a unei revolutii ratate, a unor vise risipite.
"Iranul meu" vibreaza constant in sufletul acestei femei curajoase care isi iubeste mai mult tara decat orice libertate posibila.
Shirin Ebadi este dovada vie a unei lupte subtile, dar, pana la urma, necrutatoare.
Arma ei este extrem de fragila, insa imbatabila.
Cuvantul!

Uno de los mejores libros (ensayos) para comprender las raíces de muchas problematicas del Irán contemporáneo. Shirin Ebadi, una vida consagrada a la lucha por los derechos humanos.

There were a few times where I wanted to stop reading, because so many senseless laws were making me sick. I think about how brave that women is, and what would I have done as an Iranian female, I can't even imagine. I truly recomend this book. Creo que hubo puntos de libro en los que quise dejar de leer, tantas leyes sin sentido me enferman. No me imagino que hubiera hecho como mujer irani. Creo que todos deberían leer este libro.

هذه السيرة واحدة من أجمل ما قرأت في سير النضال من أجل الحق والعدالة. إنها لا تتحدث فقط عن إيران بل عن تجربة يمكن أن يتقاطع معها أي انسان مهتم بالدفاع عن حقوق الإنسان، أو يعيش بحكم الواقع في واحدة من تلك الدول غير الحرة.

تتحدث شيرين بإيجاز عن سنواتها الأولى الطفولة و الشباب لتعطي صورة عن واقع إيران السياسي قبل الثورة الإسلامية ثم تنتقل لتصف التحولات التي شهدتها شخصيا واختبرت آثاراها منذ اندلاع الثورة الإسلامية حتى بدايات الألفية الجديدة. أحد الأمور المثيرة للإهتمام في سيرة شيرين هو أنها ساندت الثورة حتى انتصارها، ساندت قيمها وقيامها ضد الظلم من أجل واقع أفضل، لكنها أيضا كانت أحد ضحايا النظام الإسلامي الوليد على أكثر من صعيد. رحلة شيرين في الدفاع عن الحقوق قبل الثورة وبعد الثورة هي صورة لواقع أن الثورة هي عمل مستمر، وحركة مستمرة، بعض الأشخاص يمضون أبعد من غيرهم في هذا المشوار.

بدت لي شيرين موضوعية إلى درجة كبيرة، في انتقادها للنظام الإسلامي في أمور محددة وواضحة، واصرارها على الفصل والتفريق بين الإسلام، واجتهادات الفقهاء التي تتحول إلى قوانين في الجمهورية. إن الظلم الذي قد تنطوي عليه هذه الاجتهادات لا يعني أن الإسلام ظالم. وبدت موضوعيتها أيضا في الحديث عن الأمل الذي جاء مع تولي الإصلاحي خاتمي للحكم والمشاعر التي فاضت بين الناس في ذلك الوقت.

هذه سيرة مؤلمة في كل انعطافاتها، من الألم الشخصي للخذلان من الثورة التي ساندتها وحرمتها الاعتراف بقيمتها كقاضية في المحكمة، إلى بشاعة الحرب ورعبها واليأس الذي تحمله حين يصبح التسليم بأن الموت في القصف ليس إلا مسألة وقت، ذهابا إلى اعدامات المعارضين، ألم فراق الأصدقاء المهاجرين وتسربهم الواحد بعد الآخر، سجن ايفين، والتخبط ليلا في الظلام معتقدة أنهم يقودونها إلى غرفة التعذيب، تسرد قصص بعض الضحايا الذين ترافعت عنهم، وتنتهي إلى قصة المصورة التي دفعت حياتها ثمنا لصورة. ليس ثمة نهاية لآلام ضمير حر في بلاد غير حرة.

تتوقف سيرة شيرين في هذا الكتاب عند حدث فوزها بجائزة نوبل للسلام في العام 2003. وبحسب اطلاعي فقد واصلت عبادي اقامتها في ايران حتى العام 2009 حين وصلت التهديدات ضدها إلى ذروتها. يجعلني هذا الكتاب مهتمة بقراءة كتب أخرى لشيرين بما في ذلك سيرة السنوات اللاحقة والتي تضمنت المزيد من الاعتداءات على حياتها الشخصية.

السرد ممتاز والصياغة رائعة، وربما يعود جزء من الفضل إلى الكاتبة المشاركة آزاد معاوني التي تشير لها شيرين بالشكر لإعادة صياغة السيرة.

“تعملون وتتحدثون وتكتبون المقالات والمحاضرات وتلتقون الموكلين وتدافعون عنهم يوما بعد يوم وليلة في إثر ليلة، ثم تستيقظون وتلاحظون أن هناك آثارا طويلة وراءكم باتت تشكل سمعة.”

إنها سيرة مُلهمة في الكفاح.

A very interesting book about Iran and Shirin Ebadi and how both revolves and evolves around the other. She sets out to tell history of someone who stayed the whole time and challenges the world 's perception of Iran. She challenges a great many other things besides. She writes about her fears, her pride and her frustrations with the country and people in it, complacent, and her own complancey about her role as a woman. As an intelligent woman and a career orientated woman her story is not singular or unique. Women of any background or persuasion is expected to do it all. Looking after children, home and work if she so chooses work. Indeed she is even encouraged to work by her male partner so she may feel vaguely liberated. However the usual social norms must prevail. And naturally respect his work is also of paramount importance and if you become a mother then obviously you have maternal instincts and must apply them or be forever damned in society, family and yourself for being a bad mother. While trying to improve the lives of young Iranians and her children Ebadi's lament is she didn't enjoy the sweetness of her children's childhood! Would anyone but a mother would have this lament? The woman who has a career or any job and a husband and children wants to divide herself into many sections to give satisfaction on all fronts equally. But invariably she must make an ultimate sacrifice. Mostly it is physical health. Shirin Ebadi has high blood pressure. Other times it is mental health. She has two daughters she loves. Weaknesses. But for many it is to be expected and anticipated she is a woman. Over and over again she questions what this means. She lost her position as a judge. She could be punished by rape. She could be told to shut up she's just a woman. As a mother she knows what is going on in detail with her daughters. Women have no voice in Islam a person could conclude. It's not that simple. You can't make brash statements and think that solves everything. It doesn't. She writes that isn't Islam. Indeed you can't blame a religion for other peoples behaviour. God is used as an excuse for the evilness in humanity. When God doesn't provide he /she doesn't exist. When deliverance is made some are rewarded over others, therefore God can't exist. Wars, plunder and suffering is made in the name of God. So it is God that is evil, doesn't exist and therefore religion is abhorrent to the progress of Man (I use the old term deliberately here). But it is people that are at fault and always will be. Because of disbelief. I don't say believe in God as God is wonderful and all that. I say question life but don't look for obvious signs, reason or logic. Don't assume there is such a thing of the laws of nature. They don't exist. Men in the past created them. A woman doesn't have to sacrifice everything but it is natural she does so. It's not. A woman doesn't need a man to complete her life's picture nor children to round it off. Likewise a man doesn't need a woman as part of his package of adulthood. By not only approving of same sex marriage or even transexual marriage we eliminate out of date thinking for women, religion and the direction of countries. Hard to believe this all connected to politics and oppression of countless millions in the world? News flash. It does.
