This was unfortunately not my cup of tea!

Nuostabiai sukurpta istorija! Buvo palikta vietos ir pasijuokti, ir susimąstyti... Nuoširdžiai rekomenduoju visiems, kam artimos istorijos apie gyvenimą Vokietijoje su sarkazmo gaidele.

I can't figure out if "Herr Lehmann" felt more like a collection of short stories with a central chronology or a novel without aim. It definitely is exploratory and brings one close to the characters. Yet, it didn't seem like it went anywhere or that people fundamentally changed. Frank Lehmann, the main character, had all the makings of a man ready for literary and fundamental change. While always denying he wanted change or ambition, he was intelligent, a natural leader among peers, did try to establish a meaningful relationship, and was offered a management position at his bar. Throw in the collapse of the Berlin Wall as a culminating event in the setting, the reader is prepped for a book about change and forward progress. But at the end of the book, we find the wall coming down was an anticlimax as a plot device and that life went on rather normally… with Herr Lehmann remaining the same. Maybe that was the point…

Ich habe dieses Buch mit viel Vergnügen gelesen:) Die Gedankengänge von Herrn Lehrmann fand ich total witzig! Trotz längerer Nebensätzen, kann man dieses Buch auch morgens in der Bahn lesen. Es bereitete mir immer Gute Laune! Auch, wenn im Laufe des Buches einige tragische Themen auftauchten.

Läste den svenska utgåvan ”Herr Lehmann” som tyvärr inte fanns på GR. Otroligt rolig bok, högt tempo, skarp dialog och en känsla för de små detaljerna hos karaktärerna som gjorde dem distinkta och meningsutbytena komiska. Ett stråk av vemod genomsyrar berättelsen men det är ett gott, trivsamt vemod som förstärker den komiska effekten.

Vill härmed flytta till Kreuzberg i början på 90-talet och ge mig ut på en ändlös pubrunda.

The tale of a Kreuzberg hipster before there were hipsters, but there was a wall (just about, we are in autumn 1989). Herr Lehmann mooches around southern Berlin, meeting a dog, getting into a bar-fight, going swimming, seducing a chef. Each chapter is its own short story, vignettes almost, and you should definitely read chapter 2 if you've ever had a phone conversation with your parents (or ch. 11 if you've been out for a meal with them), chapter 10 if you've been in an argument with a bus driver, chapter 3 if you've hated brunch-ers, and if you've ever been to a bar and/or got drunk, every other chapter will do.

Πως και μου είχε ξεφύγει τόσο καιρό το συγκεκριμένο διαμαντάκι; Το βιβλίο το αγόρασα πριν κάνα δυο μέρες, διάβασα δοκιμαστικά τις πρώτες σελίδες για να δω τι λέει, και έφαγα κόλλημα με τον τρόπο γραφής. Μετά, η όλη ανάγνωση θύμισε αγώνα ταχύτητας, πραγματικά ούτε θρίλερ με καταιγιστικούς ρυθμούς να διάβαζα. Συγκεκριμένη πλοκή δεν υπάρχει, απλώς παρακολουθούμε σκηνές από την καθημερινότητα μερικών Βερολινέζων -συμπεριλαμβανομένου του κυρίου Λέμαν- που αποτελούν μέρος της νυχτερινής ζωής του Βερολίνου, στα τέλη της δεκαετίας του '80. Ο συγγραφέας με ωραίο χιούμορ και διάφορες τραγελαφικές καταστάσεις σκιαγραφεί τους μποέμ τύπους του Βερολίνου εκείνης της ενδιαφέρουσας εποχής. Πραγματικά ο τρόπος γραφής, με το χιούμορ, τους κωμικούς διαλόγους, τις ρεαλιστικές περιγραφές καταστάσεων και σκηνικών, μου άρεσε πάρα μα πάρα πολύ, αλλά ίσως και να μην είναι για όλα τα γούστα. Όμως, ειλικρινά, λίγο με ενδιαφέρει αυτό, από τη στιγμή που ταίριαξε απόλυτα με τα δικά μου γούστα. Επίσης, δεν μπορώ παρά να δηλώσω ότι συμπάθησα πάρα πολύ τον πρωταγωνιστή της ιστορίας, τον "καημένο" κύριο Λέμαν, που ουσιαστικά περνάει μια υπαρξιακή κρίση στα τριάντα του χρόνια. Το μόνο σίγουρο είναι ότι θα μου λείψουν οι διάφοροι χαρακτήρες, καθώς και η όλη ατμόσφαιρα του βιβλίου.

Weil mein Deutsch eher antiquiert klingt und ich mich ständig darüber beklage dass meine Gedanken in übersetzter deutscher Form langweilig und vereinfacht klingen, wurde mir dieses Buch empfohlen. Was als Deutschübung anfing wurde zu einer sehr unterhaltsamen Woche in Begleitung von Westberliner Kneipenangestellte kurz vor dem Mauerfall, mit all den kleinen Alltagsgeschichten die im schnellen, natürlich klingenden, humorvollen Dialog dargestellt wurden. Hab sehr viel gelacht und werde deswegen auch die anderen Bücher der Serie lesen.

I don’t quite understand the acclaim for this book and I wonder if something is lost in translation. The book is about the lost lifestyle and culture of West Berlin (with refreshingly little mention of the Wall) but hardly anything of the lifestyle depicted seems in any way remarkable - just a morose barman going about his humdrum life. I was left wondering what there was to mourn the loss of.

Update: I watched the film adaption, which is reasonably good. The final scene depicts the euphoria of the fall of the Wall, jolting Herr Lehman out of his despondency. That wasn’t how I read the book - I read it as a lament to the lost character and ethos of West Berlin - and so maybe my review is misleading.

On reflection I also wonder if I’m even capable of appreciating the book as an outsider. Berliners who experienced the time will project their memories onto the characters and setting. I complained that the book didn’t convey what there is to mourn the loss of but maybe native readers know that already and the book subtly reminds them of it.

A short book I borrowed from Adam. Set in Kreuzberg in 1989, Herr Lehmann is about to turn thirty. Very engagingly written, not a lot happens but it has a kafkaesque vibe and a good helping of ennui. I really enjoyed it, not least because I recognised all the streets and stuff!
