Over the years, I have read bits and pieces of Berlin Blues (Original title: Herr Lehmann), but had never read it from cover to cover. And so I finally decided to make time to do so, and downloaded the German version from Audible. And I am so glad that I did! Listening to it made me laugh out load! Berlin Blues is such a beautifully dark portrait of West Berlin Kreuzberg in the late 1980s, days before the fall of the wall.
Perhaps reading this book also brought such joy to me because the plot is so Berlin, and mentions not only bars and cafes by name, but also streets and parks, and these were my streets and parks during my life in Berlin. And so this sense of the familiar and home, combined with a funny, tragic story, made this a truly enjoyable read. Would I have loved this as much if I didn't know Berlin? I really can't say, but I don't think so. It would still be funny, but I suspect most people who love this book are Berliners themselves. But it is still worth the read, even if you aren't one.
Note however that a lot of the humor is lost in translation, so if you can, read this in German. The audiobook version is fantastic.

Very enjoyable read!
Really straightforward and I mean that in the best way in this case - this story follows sarcastic loafer protagonist Frank Lehmann, called by those around him as Herr Lehmann, and his various antics living in Berlin.
This could work really well as a play, as it is dominated by visceral conversational scenes between the characters. I think one highlights of the book was probably him trying to get into East Berlin, but having a protracted disagreement with the bureaucratic border guard about an envelope with money in it that he is bring over for his relation, ending up not going at all and just returning home to sleep.

Definitely one of the better reads I've enjoyed! Would highly recommend!!

Absolut tolles Buch! Ich hab schon ganz lange nicht mehr laut lachen müssen beim Lesen und obwohl Frank Lehmann nun wirklich keine typische Heldenfigur ist, muss man ihn einfach sympathisch finden und irgendwie mit ihm leiden, wenn er immer wieder und scheinbar durch unglückliche Zufälle in unangenehme und dadurch noch kuriosere Situationen gerät. Alles wirkt dabei durch den trockenen Humor und die unaufgeregte Erzählweise meiner Meinung nach noch lustiger. Diese tragische Komik tröstet ohne Weiteres darüber hinweg, dass es keinen wahnsinnig spannenden Plot gibt, der einen den Atem anhalten lässt. Im Gegenteil: Die Geschichte besticht durch den schlichten Werdegang der Figuren, der gar nicht langweilig, sondern eher naturalistischer Natur ist. Es geht eben um die normalen kleinen Geschehnisse und Aufregungen des Alltags im Leben von Einzelpersonen. Man lernt jemanden kennen, verliebt sich, es klappt oder eben nicht, man hat ulkige Konversationen und Begegnungen mit seinen Eltern, man versucht sich etwas aufzubauen und scheitert vielleicht. Das alles vor dem Hintergrund der letzten Monate des kleinen Westberlin vor dem Mauerfall. Gespickt mit dieser Situationskomik für mich alles andere als langweilig und deshalb eins der Bücher, die ich dieses Jahr am liebsten gelesen hab.

Võibolla tuleks seda raamatut lugeda Berliinis. Või Berliinist tulles. Või kergelt vindise peaga, et sisse elada kõigisse neisse joomingutesse. Vastust teab vaid tuul.

Sólo puedo destacar como positivo algún momento gracioso y las pocas alusiones a la caída del Muro. No me han gustado ni los personajes, ni el estilo del escritor, y además no pasa nada en el libro.

Wunderbar und kurzweilig geschrieben, gibt das Buch Lust auf Streiterei und Arbeit hinter dem Thresen mit Herrn Lehmann.

Cracked me up! Especially the vivid narrations when Herr Lehamnn, for instance, walks into his usual restaurant, sees his usual table unavailable, and his internal negative-ass narrative begins spiraling out of control until he works himself into a childish, hilarious rage. As someone who moved last year to Berlin, this was a tremendously insightful look into the not-so-great mood that seems to influence so many fellow Berliners.

Mein erste deutsches Buch!

An enjoyable read, better than I’d been expecting. It works on a few levels – the characters and setting (bar workers in West Berlin immediately before the Wall falls) are robust and vital and fun. The plot is also compelling, mostly because it’s unpredictable. It seems like it’s going to be a sort of rags-to-riches story as Herr Lehmann, supported by his reliable best friend Karl and new lover Katrin, turns his life around as Berlin is reborn around him – but everything falls apart in the final act, and he ends up right back where he started. Plus it’s funny – maybe not always laugh-out-loud funny, but at least wry-smile funny. And all of these things combine to convey something essential about a particular time and place, a time that’s recent enough for clear memory but a place that has changed so much that it evokes a real sense of nostalgia and loss.

Zuerst erinnerte mich die Serie an Gerhard Henschels "Martin Schlosser" Serie - ich hatte schon vor, nach den obligatorischen ersten dreißig Seiten aufzugeben und was anderes zu lesen.
Dann zog mich Herr Lehmann aber in seinen Bann, denn anders als Schlosser hat er ein Leben und Charakter. Die anderen drei Bände der Trilogie hauen in die gleiche Kerbe und ich lese sie alle gern!

Ein Selbstfindungsprozess. Frank Lehmann steht sich gerne selbst im Weg, ist aber andererseits am glücklichsten in seinem Job am Tresen. Dort, wo er sein Leben ändern könnte (und sollte), zögert er, säuft dann lieber.
Lehmann ist ein passiver Antiheld, über dessen Leben und Lebenshaltung das Nachdenken sich lohnt, der den Leser mit seiner Unschlüssigkeit aber auch auf die Palme bringen kann.
Stellenweise ist das Buch aber gerade deshalb brüllend tragikomisch.
Leicht beängstigend, im Anschluss "Neue Vahr Süd" zu lesen, das Lehmans Leben vor seiner Berliner Kneipen"karriere" beschreibt.

Y pensar que solo me costo como 3 dólares.. este libro es bueno, no buenísimo.. pero si bueno, creo que la función de los libros es generar sensaciones en los lectores y este libro me causó angustia y compasión por el personaje principal, que hombre para ser tan de malas y con una vida tan básica, sientes compasión por el y quisieras que por su vida pasaran cosas más emocionantes. En el libro no sucede nada interesante. OJO. No sucede nada, pero la manera en la que está contada la historia te mantiene entretenido, el autor tiene una manera de escribir que te mantiene conectado a la historia y hace que algo tan básico como unas personas hablando mientras beben sea algo que te mantenga pegado al libro.Te dan ganas de leer más sobre la básica vida del señor lehmann y sus múltiples decepciones con todos los que lo rodean. Hasta ahora es el único libro que me hecho reír a carcajadas, me refiero a que siempre algo me causa gracia, pero hasta ahí, pero hay una escena donde literal no pude aguantar la risa. Creo que ahí, el libro me ganó.
