Es el autor más clásico entre los tres que siempre se citan. Posteriormente vendrán Sófocles y Eurípides. Su tratamiento de la dividinad, la fortuna, los personajes arquetípicos ayudan a entender no solo a los autores posteriores sino el propósito de la tragedia.

Es recomendable conocer cómo se representaban en Atenas, a qué obedecían, para entender y así disfrutar más el texto. Las trilogía que se converva completa (Agamenón, Las Coéforas y Las Euménides) alcanza otro alcance de reflexión si se lee también Prometeo encadenado, con su reflexión sobre la justicia y la venganza, el cumplimiento de una ley (¿natural?) o mandato divino.

Why don’t people read? There are so many answers for so many problems, for example in The Suppliants we can see many contemporary problems like immigration, we can even see an idea that Kant will support fully which is to ask the people if they want to go to war or not before engaging one (crazy how Aeschylus in a society with so many different values from ours understood it). Aside from the modernity of this, i really loved the question the tragedies gave me: the Oresteia is a masterpiece (even tho as many i found it weird how Orestes got freed but i can understand), exploring the conflict between natural and positive law and the never ending cycle that revenge leads us. I really liked Prometheus too, his way of talking, his proudness in having created humans giving them the unique trait of having hope.

Las historias son interesantes, pero el lenguaje no ayuda. De todas formas, es un aspecto que al mantenerse permite conocer el estilo de la época. Pero quizás algunas adaptaciones vendrían bien.

Un clásico entre los clásicos, leído en versión clásica.
Nadie como los antiguos autores griegos para mostrar las pasiones (generalmente bajas) del espíritu humano.
Como casi todo el mundo sabe, la Orestiada la componen tres obras: Agamenón, Las Coéforas y Las Euménides. Se supone que todos sabemos el argumento; para ponernos en situación, transcurre inmediatamente tras la victoria de los aliados griegos contra Troya. Cuando los héroes, en este caso Agamenón, retornan a casa tienen que lidiar con las miserias y rencores de la vida cotidiana.
No son obras fáciles de leer sin la debida ayuda (que aportan las notas al texto) ni un mediano conocimiento de "los dioses y héroes de la antigua Grecia" (v. Robert Graves), pero al ser breves permiten recrearse en los diálogos entre humanos, dioses y mitos para comprobar que todos tienen vergüenzas que ocultar.

Espectaculares tragedias. Quizá las dos primeras (Los persas y Los siete contra Tebas) no lleguen al nivel de las cinco siguientes, pero en Esquilo está todo lo que vino después. Oráculos, humanos y dioses conviven; unos evitando su destino, otros, incitándolo.

I guess I got some wrong version of this book because many features described here were missing. It was just plays with introduction...
As to plays themselves: unlike Euripides and Sophocles Aeschylus has not won my heart. For example Persians I just quit reading because it was too archaic for me.

The Seven againts Thebes 2/5
There is no real dialoque, just succesive (usually long) monoloques and number of anti/strophes is just insane. It's piece for classic-poetry-lover not piece for drama-lover. On the plus side it was much darker than The Phoenician Women, but still I prefer them.

Agamemnon 3/5
For me this was much better than Seven Againts Thebes but I still dislike Aeschylus' style. For me its too much about poetry and too little about drama.
Good thing is that play was really succesful in building up deep feeling of uncoming doom, really a dark feeling only few tragedies can compete with but it was somehow killed in the end. When murder really happened it was just "So it is done. At last, we can go home"

Eumenides 2/5
I was waiting for some cool trial with argumentation, feelings and so on. But the trial part itself was quite underdone. Ok. my fault, I forget that this is Aeschylus not Euripides he's not into this sort of thing. But still c'mon, nevery little thing is there commented by neverending monoloques by charactes acompanied by five strophes, five antistrophes and two epodes by chorus and Orestes' final defense is so short?
In this piece I had feeling this might be really cool onstage. All the songs, Furies, cool passage where jurors cast their votes... but if I should judge it as a book I must say that it's quite boring.

De acuerdo con alguna crítica precedente. En el conjunto de la tragedia clásica, Esquilo destaca por un mayor lirismo. Me quedo, con mucho, con Sófocles, cuyas obras, según mi opinión, tienen un carácter teatral más efectivo.

Recensire?

Come si possono recensire le Tragedie di Eschilo?
Mi limiterò a dire che, soprattutto in Prometeo e nelle tre tragedie dell'Orestèa c'è tutto: l'analisi sociale, l'azione, l'introspezione dei personaggi, la lotta per il potere, il rapporto tra l'uomo ed il divino.... Insomma Eschilo è uno dei grandi capisaldi della cultura occidentale, una delle fonti del nostro modo di essere e di pensare.
L'edizione non supporta cotanta importanza: la guida alla lettura che precede i testi ha la forma di un bignamino. Da sottolineare, invece, la forma poetica scelta per la traduzione, che se da un lato comporta una lettura non sempre agevole dall'altro rende a tratti molto bene la musicalità dei testi originari.
