About the author

Tsugumi Ōba (Profile in Japanese: 大場 つぐみ), born in Tokyo, Japan, is a writer best known for the manga Death Note. His/her real identity is a closely guarded secret. As stated by the profile placed at the beginning of each Death Note manga, Ōba collects teacups and develops manga plots while holding his knees on a chair, similar to a habit of L, one of the main characters of the series.

There is speculation that Tsugumi Ōba is a pen name and that he is really Hiroshi Gamō. Pointing out that in Bakuman the main character's uncle was a one-hit wonder manga artist who worked on a gag super hero manga, very similar to Gamō and Tottemo! Luckyman in all aspects. Also that the storyboards drawn by Ōba greatly resemble Tottemo! Luckyman in style.

A couple of twists that I didn’t see coming!

It was truly a remarkable experience. The story took unexpected turns that left me completely astonished.

At first, everything seemed to be unfolding in a rather predictable manner. But then, out of nowhere, a twist emerged that completely changed the course of events.

I found myself on the edge of my seat, eagerly anticipating what would happen next. And just when I thought I had it all figured out, another twist came along and threw me for a loop.

These twists added an element of excitement and mystery to the narrative that kept me engaged from start to finish.

It was a reminder that sometimes, the most interesting stories are the ones that take us by surprise and lead us down paths we never expected to travel.

I can't wait to see what other surprises this journey has in store for me.

The relationships presented in this work are disappointingly one-dimensional. There is a distinct lack of depth and complexity, making them feel rather shallow and unengaging. The characterization, too, is flimsy. The characters seem to lack substance and fail to truly come alive on the page. The philosophy that is supposed to underlie the story has that all-too-common faux depth that is often found in manga. It gives the appearance of being profound but upon closer inspection, it falls flat. Talking heads often drone on for page after page, making the reading experience rather tedious at times. And let's not even get started on the female characters. They are absolutely horrible, lacking any real agency or interesting qualities.

So, why am I still reading this? Well, there are a few redeeming factors. The concept itself is brilliant, full of potential and intrigue. Light, the main character, has an incorrigibly single-minded nature that makes him both fascinating and somewhat terrifying. And then there are the occasionally interesting plot twists that manage to keep me hooked. Oh, and let's not forget Takeshi Obata. He is a rather good artist, especially considering all the talking heads he has to make look interesting. His illustrations add a certain visual appeal to the story, even if the writing itself has its flaws.

I go to the store with great anticipation to buy the other Death Note black editions.

As I walk towards the store, my mind is filled with a flurry of questions. WHAT IS HAPPENING? How is this going to work? WHAT WHAT WHAT?!

I am truly excited about getting my hands on these additional volumes. The first Death Note black edition was seriously so good! It had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish.

I can't wait to dive into the next installments and see what new twists and turns the story has in store.

The anticipation is killing me, but I know it'll be worth it once I start reading.

I hope the store has the ones I'm looking for in stock.

Fingers crossed!
