A remarkable first part (out of three) that hints at a very high-level space opera, and then... the disaster. The ideas are absurd, the construction is clumsy, the descriptions are tiresome, the characters are exasperating; the contradictions are legion and the pretension is immense. A nightmare. If I had known, I would have stopped at The Fall of Hyperion, when Dan Simmons still had all his wits (or almost). It's truly a pity that what started with such promise took such a nosedive. The initial part had so much potential, with its captivating setting and the possibility of an epic space adventure. But as the story progressed, it all fell apart. The lack of coherence in the ideas, the poor structuring, and the unappealing characters made it a real struggle to get through. It's a disappointment for fans who were hoping for a great space opera to rival the best in the genre. Maybe Dan Simmons had a different vision that didn't quite translate onto the page, but whatever the reason, this is not the masterpiece that it could have been.
