Elisabeth Alione is convalescing in a hotel in rural France when she meets two men and another woman. The sophisticated dalliance among the four serves to obscure an underlying violence, which, when the curtain of civilization is drawn aside, reveals in her fellow guests a very contemporary, perhaps even new, form of insanity. Like many of Duras's novels, Destroy, She Said owes much to cinema, displaying a skillful interplay of dialogue and description. DESTROY, SHE SAID by MARGUERITE DURAS
On the front cover it states that this is a novel. I think it’s important to make that distinction because this is a novel that reads and acts more as a play script. The writer hardly, and consciously, uses full sentences and most of the plot is moved forward through dialogue.
The setting is a hotel dining room and in the distance is a forest. There a four characters; two men and two woman; one couple among them is married, but there is much polygamy (did I mention it’s a French book?) and a lot of implied eroticism. The violence is subtle but the madness is plain to see and sometimes I wondered if the writer intended me to believe that this hotel was in fact a mental institution.
I look forward to analysing this further and watching the film adaptation that was made by Duras herself.

No final de “Destruir, Diz Ela”, encontramos as indicações cénicas para esta obra, o que faz sentido, porque tudo nesta obra cheira a encenação, desde as personagens que pouco têm de natural nas suas falas e ações, até às situações que, às vezes, raiam o absurdo.
O cenário construído por Marguerite Duras é uma espécie de sanatório a que três das quatro personagens parecem ter ido parar por acaso. Só Elisabeth Alione, alvo da curiosidade dos outros, constantemente observada por eles, está ali com um propósito claro, o de se restabelecer por ter dado à luz um nado-morto e por algo mais, como depois vem a saber-se.
- Aqui ninguém fala com os outros.
- E você? Tinha-me falado se eu não o tivesse feito?
- Não - Elisabeth sorri – sou tímida. Além disso não me aborreço, tomo demasiados medicamentos para me aborrecer...
Stein, um judeu errante, Max Thor, professor de “História do futuro” e a sua jovem namorada, Alissa, aquela que é claramente apontada como louca, parecem um bando de feras disfarçadas à procura de uma presa fácil.
- Vocês interessam-se mesmo muito por ela – exclama Bernardo Alione.
- É verdade.
- Pode-se saber porquê? - a voz readquiriu força.
- Por razões literárias – responde Stein.
Stein ri. Alissa olha-o rir deslumbrada.
- A minha mulher é uma personagem de romance? – pergunta Bernard Alione.
É uma obra opaca a maior parte do tempo, com personagens obscuras cujas intenções também não são claras, a não ser talvez a de se destruírem umas às outras mas de um modo quase impercetível, através da sedução, de insinuações e de sub-reptícios actos de agressão psicológica.

There's something both captivating and viscerally upsetting about this novella. The book feels like a dream, the characters wandering in and out of the hotel they are in, making the same conversation every day that passes. The forest surrounding the hotel looms in the background, the question of whether or not they should go for a walk within the forest one that reappears when the characters feel uncomfortable or desiring.
There's so much I didn't understand as I was making my way through the story, but I also felt so captivated and unsure how it all would end.
This is one that's going to stick in my mind for some time, and I can't wait to reread it.
