4 Stars for Tropic of Cancer (audiobook) by Henry Miller read by Ian McShane.

This was a interesting story. But I’m sure I would have never read it if it hadn’t been banned when it was first published. I find it fascinating to see where society has drawn the line and band certain books.

raunchy, innocent, depraved, virtuous, full of desperate joy and utter sadness.

Simply wonderful.

In the "Tropic of Cancer" Henry Miller demonstrates a certain taste for recherché vocabulary. For example, he uses the word chthonic 2 times. He uses another vulgar anglo-saxon word beginning with "c" and ending with "t" 193 times according to word count function of Kobo. In short, the "Tropic of Cancer" is a dizzying mixture of erudition and obscenity combined in the proportions described above.

Once considered to be a great classic of counter-culture literature, the "Tropic of Cancer" was starting to fall out of favour in academic circles when I began my university studiesin 1972. As a consequence, I only resolved to read it when I saw Henry Miller making an appearance in the current ITV hit series "The Durrells in Corfu".

In addition to gross misogyny, the "Tropic of Cancer" is in places wildly anti-Semitic. Although, women and Jews get the worst of it, Miller also attacks the Roman Catholic Church, French culture, American social values and the literary canon of Western Europe. Despite occasional moments of lucidity, the work is profoundly childish. I apologize to my GR friends who tried to talk me out of it.

هنا لن تجد كتاباً عادياً صديقي القارئ و إذا لم تشعر بفرق بعد تلك الثرثرة المجنونة بفرق فأنت لم تستطع الولوج لعالم هنري ميللر حقاً فلا تقترب وترميه بأبشع الأوصاف .
كتاب سيثير الشقاق و الهياج والاضطراب . كُتب لمن ؟ للجبناء المذلولين ، نعم هو من أجل اللصوص و الكاذبين المفترين ، من أجل المرواغين المخربين ، من أجل الممسوسين المسلوخين من جلدة الحياة ، من أجل المعدمين و المذلولين في سبيل كسرة الخبز في سبيل الحب في سبيل نشوة في سبيل الدفء في سبيل العيش على قيد الحياة كتاب للوجه الآخر للإنسانية المشوهة المريضة ، للخبث الرخيص المتألق للكسالى و الضعفاء للعالم الآخر المنسي في سراديب الأرض .
قرأته و أنا أطفح بكل مشاعر الغضب و الحقد والحقارة ، قرأته في اللحظة الحاسمة ، و أنا لأول مرة أشعر بسطوة روح الشر المجنونة تغلب علي و تئن تطالب بحقها في الثورة على كل شيء و الظهور بكاملها .
هذا الكتاب البذيء للكاتب الوغد هنري ميللر ركلة على قفا الإنسانية ، على قفا الفضيلة ، على قفا الصحة ، على قفا الاستقرار و الأمان ، على قفا الحياة التي تتجذر بدواخلنا كالسرطان ، هذا الكتاب اللعين فعلاً كان ركلة قاسية ومذلة على قفا كل الكتب التي قرأتها وتحصنت بها ، ركلة على قفا كل شيء !!!
الكتاب أتى بوقته فعلاً كنت بحاجة لشيء ما يفرغ تلك الثورة المجنونة بداخلي ، كتاب يشعرني بالواقعية بالشر بالفسق بالذل بالتفاهة بالحقارة التي نعيشها كل يوم وتتوارى خلف ثيابنا الزاهية والضحكة التي تطل على العدم والفضيلة المزعومة و التي تخفي وجهاً آخر .
يحكي لنا هنري ميللر مغامراته المجنونة الفاسقة و الحقيرة في شوارع باريس مع عدة من رفاقه الذين يدورون ويدورون ضمن مدارات سرطانية لا نهاية لها تتكاثف وتتقاطع بشراهة و جنون .
الرواية مليئة بالهذر و الفراغ تارةً بالفلسفات العميقة والاعترافات . يسرقنا من خلالها لحظات لعوالم مارسيل بروست أسبينوزا و سيتريندبرغ و نساء لوحات ماتيس والكثير من الكتّاب والشخوص الأدبية و الفنية، تتخلل الرواية ذم و انتقادات لاذعة للطبيعة الأمريكية ومقارنات بائسة مع الشعب الفرنسي ، انتقاد للحكومة للأدب لكل شيء . أبهرني دقة تصويره العمق النفسي و الغرابة الفرنسية بطريقة العيش و الحياة و حتى في البذاءة و العهر باريس التي جذبت و لازالت تجذب كل العشاق و المهووسين للعظام و المهلوسين سيجذبك بلا شك توصيفه وعمقه بذلك . بعض المواضع تصيبك بملل مجنون جراء الحشو الزائد والثرثرة الفارغة ، بعض المواضع تلمس روحك وقلبك و بعضها يقززك ويستثير هدوئك .
الشخصيات تتوافد على الصفحات بشكل مجنون لدرجة لم أستطع إحصائها كاملة بعد انتهائي وكلها بلا استثناء تخيم على سمائها روح الصرصار الدوستوفسكية بلا استثناء .
لن أُعقب على الترجمة التي كانت لا بأس بها مرة وتعيسة مرات فالنسخة قديمة كانت .
حتى البذاءة و الانحلال تحتاج للفن والبراعة و الشفافية لتوصيفها بشكل حقيقي ، فالتقنية الإيروتيكية التي صور لنا بها لقاءات عاهراته هو ورفاقه التي كانت بقمة البذاءة والأوضاع الحقيرة والتفاصيل الدقيقة مزج وسم منها لوحة فنية رهيبة أبهرتني لوحة بقمة البراعة والحقارة والبذاءة والانحلال لم تكن مبتذلة أبداً و متكلفة .

Дочитала «Тропик Рака». Миллер — честный мужик, весёлый и смелый, и пишет всё как есть. Это вызывает уважение.

Знакомые и приятели, с которыми я прекрасно общаюсь, посмотрев мои сторис, уже успели спросить меня, что же я такое развесёлое читаю, и начали читать «Тропик Рака» тоже. Вот с такими людьми, как Генри Миллер, мне проще всего находить общий язык. Открытые, весёлые, не боящиеся жить. Сильные и смелые.

Кое-кто мне тут в личку писал, что с удовольствием отправился бы вместе с Миллером в загул по барам. Да и вообще.

«Тропик Рака» чем-то напомнил мне откровенную честность «Хулиганов» Мирчи Элиаде. Ну то есть — мужчина честно пишет о своей мужской жизни, со всей грубостью, похабщиной и т. д. и т. п. Не причёсывая. А мне это нравится.

Если реальный парижский знакомый Генри Миллера через каждые два слова употреблял в жизни эпитет е****й, то не сомневайтесь, и в книге Миллер будет писать е****й, ничего не прилизывая и не запикивая в речи персонажа. Максимум — чуть имя изменит. А может и нет.

«Тропик Рака» — это мы все. Тут нет грязи, тут есть юмор и честность. А приличия выкинуты за ненадобностью.

Буду читать Миллера дальше, а сейчас нужно немного отдохнуть от этой эмоциональной бури, пока я не начала танцевать в барах на столах.

This may be one of the best books in the American cannon, and also, unfortunately, one of the most underrated. I read a lot of the reviews on the book before writing this and I found not very many that were thought out. I recall one reviewer giving up on the book because the "frenetic style was tiresome." Usually when someone has feelings like that, it is because they don't understand the literature and so their mind wanders. Another review noted that Miller's supposed "shock tactics" were outdated. Miller never meant to shock people, that is in your head. If you read the opening quote by Emerson, it states something to the effect that telling a true story about yourself is something near to impossible, this is Miller's attempt at doing that. He pulls no punches on the everyday vernacular that he must have used and imagined. This makes the story not only authentic, but also compelling. Miller's mix of philosophy and the impressionistic portrait that he paints of Paris make for a challenging and gorgeous read. Like Whitman, Miller finds beauty in all things and despite atrocious circumstances, he finds the will and the hope to enjoy his freedom. His style cries Whitman with its use of many objects to describe a single scene or feeling, but he has a different touch than Whitman that allows for the darker underbelly of human life that we so often discard because we lack the ability to understand the parts of ourselves that we have been taught to be shamed by. A must read for those who have read Whitman and really love him. Great companions to this book are: Whitman's "Leaves of Grass" and Charriere's "Papillon."
