A ono... Pustolovni roman za mlade. Ja sam ipak očito malo prestara za ovo.

I thoroughly enjoyed Allende's mix of magical fantasy and realism which makes you believe you're in another world. Beautiful writing. Although it is completely different, any Harry Potter fan would love this. This book began as bedtime stories told to her own children and grandchildren who persuaded her to put it on paper.

المغامرة والفانتازيا جنباً إلى جنب في هذه الرواية التي تقتحم غابات الأمازون وتثير الرغبة في الترحال واستكشاف ما هو بعيد وجديد.
من الأشياء التي خرجت بها من هذه الرواية هو الإحساس بضرورة السفر والترحال والمغامرة، لأن العمر ليس بطول السنين وإنما بمقدار الخبرة التي نجنيها عبر هذه السنين. فالاحتكاك بالحياة لفترة قصيرة يمنح من الخبرات ما يفوق سنوات طويلة من المرور كراماً بجانب الحياة دون الدخول في غمار تجاربها ومغامراتها التي لا تنتهي.
انتظر الفرصة القادمة لقراءة رواية أخرى لإيزابيل ألليندي.

Un libro lleno de misterios, la primera mitad me tuvo muy confundido, pero despues logre aclararme y ver lo que pasaba, aunque el principio es muy lento, y la acción no llega hasta la mitad, fue una lectura agradable.

I wanted to try some of Allende's work, and being lazy I picked one of her kids' books. However, I'm not sure that was the best choice after all. 'City of the Beasts' was not quite my cup of tea, even though I generally enjoy YA-books. However, I tend to enjoy them because they are lighthearted and easy to read, or because they present difficult problems in a slightly less depressing light. City on the Beasts did not have that lightness. It wanted to incorporate some issues (genocide, exploitation of native cultures, the damage that is done to some parts of the earth), but I felt it got a bit preachy at times. Too many issues presented in far too simple terms. Good and evil were a bit too clearly separated, there was only one morally ambiguous character (Leblanc) and he basically turned from caricature annoyingness to not very believable okayness in one moment. Didn't work for me. Also, there was a plot-twist at the end that I found very very very predictable.

Still, three stars for the nice writing and some things that I really liked reading about, even though I didn't think they were altogether believable. In addition, some parts of the book were rather suspenseful, which is why I kept on reading until the end.

This book was first published in 2002 so it has been around for quite a while, but I had never encountered it although I have read other books by Isabel Allende. The book seems primarily directed toward a young adult audience, of which I meet only the second word in that description.

The two main characters are teenagers Alexander and Nadia. When Alexander's mother becomes quite ill, he is sent to New York to stay with his grandmother, Kate. She is a magazine reporter who is irascible and tough-minded, not qualities that one would normally associate with the word "grandmother." She had been planning a trip to the Amazon to search for a gigantic legendary creature known only as the Beast and to encounter the lost tribes who live in that region. Now, she'll be taking Alexander along with her.

The local guide for the trip into the Amazon has a teenage daughter named Nadia, and she and Alex quickly bond. Other members of the expedition include an anthropologist, a doctor, and a local entrepreneur. Pretty soon we come to suspect that not all of these people are pure of heart and at least one may have ulterior motives.

Once in the Amazon, a local tribe known as the People of the Mists take Alexander and Nadia and they travel with them through jungle, mountains, and caves. The two young people get an education in what it is like to live as primitive hunter-gatherers.

Alexander and Nadia are presented as remarkably rational thinkers who are able to reason things out and come to logical solutions to problems. In this regard, they are more adept than many of the adults around them.

This apparently was the first in a trilogy featuring these characters. I enjoyed it quite a bit and, at some point, would not be averse to reading the other two books, but I already have a full reading list and they will just have to take their place in the queue.

كم سمعت باسم هذا الكتاب ، لكنني لم اتصور ان ايزابيل الليندي هي الكاتبه ، رغم انني احبها و احب اسلوبها ، لكن هذا الكتاب هو ليس بجودة ما سبق و قرأت لها ، هنا الكثير من السحر ، و الكثير من الخيال .
انا احب الواقع ، التاريخ ، لذلك لم يعجبني كثيرا ، بالاضافه الى طول السرد الممل في بعض اجزاء الكتاب .
دائما ما كنت اتساءل ، لماذا البعض من شعوب العالم المتقدم " كما يطلقون على انفسهم " ينصبون انفسهم حماة للاقليات ، الذين عاشوا حياتهم بسلام و امن طيله منذ وجودهم ، من سمح لهم بتسميم حياتهم ، بغزوهم بتكنولوجيا لا تناسبهم ، الم يعلموا انهم يدمرون حياتهم ، بنشرهم قصصا عنهم في مجلاتهم و اعلامهم ، يجعلون العديد من جامعي الثروات ، يهاجمونهم و يقتلونهم ببرود ، فتنتهي هذه الجماعات ، بوقت قصير من معرفة العالم لهم ، و هذا ما يقدمه من يسمون نفسهم بالباحثين و المصورين .
هنا جاب الكسندر الامازون مع جدته ، لم يعلم بان هذه الرحلة ، ستخلق منه رجلا واسع الافق ، قادر على مواجهة المستقبل ، هو و صديقته الرائعه ناديا سانتوس ، كانا خير عون لبعضهما ، و جزءا مهما في اكتشاف الحقيقه ، و مساعدة هنود الضباب و انقاذهم من باحثين العالم المتقدم .

Este libro es el primero de la trilogía, tiene una buena conclusión y no es necesario leer los otros dos libros, pero estoy segura que después de terminar el primero no podrás despedirte tan fácil de los personajes.

This was aggressively meh. I've enjoyed Isabel Allende's books in the past, so I figured it was worth trying one of her YA books. And while this started pretty solidly, this rapidly became dull. The whole thing just sort of became very action-centric with no depth at all to the characters.

And when there turned out to be a subplot in which there was a plan to kill of an entire indigenous community with fake vaccinations, I was basically on the No Thank You train.

4 Sterne (= sehr gut)

Ein wirklich guter Auftakt zu einer Jugend-Fantasy-Trilogie, die in vielen Aspekten von so einigen Jugend-Fantasy-Geschichten aus den aktuellen Jahren abweicht.

- Toll, dass Alexander und Nadia sich als jugendliche Protagonisten auch tatsächlich *jung* anfühlen (keine Pseudojugendlichen, die sich stattdessen die ganze Zeit mit Erwachsenenthemen, meistens Sex, rumschlagen)
- Brutal ist die Geschichte trotzdem. Hier wird nichts geschönt, weder was menschliche Abgründe und Vorurteile angeht, noch was die Naturgewalt des Amazonas-Urwalds betrifft. Allerdings wird diese Brutalität nicht in Details ausgebreitet. Man muss sich damit abfinden, dass manche dieser Szenen sich dann ein bisschen wie im Schnelldurchlauf anfühlen.
- Die Magie beruht auf Mythen von indianischen Urvölkern des Amazonas-Gebiets. Diese Art von Magie sieht man sonst selten in Fantasy, die Geschichte wird dadurch umso einzigartiger. Allende geht allerdings schön respektvoll vor. Anhand von Nadia und Alexander wird gezeigt, wie wertvoll und stark diese Mythenwelt machen kann; und niemand muss missioniert werden.
- Ein bisschen halten mich die Figuren auf Abstand (z.B. stereotypische Bösewichte), da gibt's einen Stern Abzug von mir.

Vollste Empfehlung, mein Re-Read hat sich gelohnt. Ich werde gerne in der Reihe weiterlesen!

E' un libro per ragazzi. E' la prima considerazione che viene in mente alla fine della lettura. Non e' una nota riduttiva, ma piuttosto indicativa. I due protagonisti principali, Nadia e Alex, ragazzini di 13 e 15 anni, danno il passo a tutto il racconto ambientato nella foresta amazzonica. Il tenore della narrazione varia dall'avventuroso fino ad arrivare al fantastico-favolistico. Il materiale per farne qualcosa di piu' "pesante" ci sarebbe stato in abbondanza. L'analisi etnografica delle popolazioni indigene, l'incombente pericolo di estinzione di queste popolazioni, l'avidita' ottusa dei civilizzati, l'opportunita' immensa dell'utilizzo oculato delle risorse della foresta, sono tutti temi sfiorati, esposti e poi sempre declinati in tono adolescenziale, evidentemente per una precisa scelta dell'autrice. Ne nasce quindi un buon libro di formazione per ragazzi o piu' generalmente un libro di avventura e svago. Una piccola postilla polemica potrebbe essere rivolta al teorema di fondo del libro. L'idea del "buon selvaggio", privo di pensieri malvagi, refrattario ad ogni azione cattiva, intento ad agire unicamente in ossequio ad istinti "naturali" e in quanto tali giusti, e' tanto sbagliata, superata e pericolosa, quanto consolatoria e assolutoria per il paternalismo dei cattivi "civilizzatori".

تأخذنا إيزابيل برحلة مدهشة مليئة بالعجائب مع أليكس، والذي بعد مرض أمه الشديد واضطرار والده لأخذها لمشفى بعيد، توجب عليه أن يذهب ليقيم مع جدته "كات" المجنونة على حد تعبيرهم والتي تستعد حاليا للذهاب مع فريق كامل في رحلة استكشافية للأمازون لاكتشاف "البهيمة" (مخلوق أسطوري) وكتابة مقال عنها، وسيتوجب عليه أن يذهب معها.

تواجه أليكس وجدته وفريق الاستكشاف العديد من المخاطر والمغامرات أثناء الرحلة المليئة بالمعاني والدروس وكل ما هو ساحر ومدهش. وأهمها تواصلهم مع القبائل الهندية القديمة (السكان الأصليين) وتعرفهم عليهم وعلى عاداتهم وطقوسهم ومعايشتها، وتعرّفهم بشكل أكبر على معاناتهم جرّاء التوسّع والجشع.

وكالعادة لا تفوّت إيزابيل أي مشهد حتى تجعلك تشعر به وكأنك متواجد فيه، ولا تقصّر في توظيف أي تعبير وأي وصف قد يساهم في إثارة خيالك لحد النشوة..
