15 year old Sara had Taste! So happy i loved this book still, 9 years later. Still think it deserves the 5. Super interesting that i definitely see the points where my teen self just held on as tight as Borobá

jag tycker ändå om den här bokens annorlunda mystik och spänning. det var så lätt för mig att fantisera mig in i djungellivet tillsammans med de andra, kanske för att den var så detaljerad skriven.
i början trodde jag dock inte att jag skulle gilla den så värst, den var rätt så seg och jag var väldigt confused över storyn. men kul var det!! :>

Un libro de aventura y magia, es más para adolescentes que quieren algo de fácil lectura y que sea entretenido.

Es el primer libro que leo de Isabel Allende y me ha gustado mucho su estilo.
Sobre el libro siento que algunas partes se me hicieron un poco apresuradas y quizás confusas, pero aún así me gustó, el trasfondo es también bastante interesante, aún así siento que es un libro de fantasía para gente que no suele leer fantasía o que les cuesta este género, ya que es fantasía bastante ligera, aunque como libro de aventuras es fantástico. En fin, la historia engancha bastante y es muy entretenida, recomiendo este libro en especial para quienes recién se adentran en el género de la fantasía.
Por el momento puedo afirmar que continuaré con esta trilogía y con la autora en general, me ha gustado bastante.

I am currently reading a number of Allende's novels; I hadn't intended to read any of the Young Adult books, but the description of them in her autobiography La suma de las dias seemed interesting so when I found this translation for ten cents at a used book store I decided to pick it up. Despite the length it only took a few hours to read. According to her autobiography it was written in collaboration with her three grandchildren, Alejandro, Andrea and Nicole; the hero is named Alexander and there are references to the other two. There are two sequels, I'm not sure if they all feature Alexander or if there is one for each grandchild.

The blurb calls it "magical realism" but it struck me more as an actual fantasy novel, though with some realistic description. It is set in the Upper Orinoco-Amazon region on the border of Venezuela and Brazil. The plot concerns an attempt by a millionaire with the support of corrupt military officials to exterminate a native population to exploit the resources of their land -- not unfortunately an unrealistic premise. There is much spiritualism as one would expect from Allende. Fifteen-year-old Alexander and his thirteen-year-old friend Nadia, together with a supporting cast of an eccentric grandmother, a guide (Nadia's father), a shaman, an Indian tribe and an anthropologist for comic relief, save the native population, as well as a population of yeti-like creatures. Not great literature, but an entertaining read for younger readers -- I might consider it more for middle-grades than Young Adult; there is no real romance between the two main characters.

my first all Spanish novel!

Alex es un chico norteamericano que por razones fuera de su control, emprenderá un viaje con su abuela Kate al Amazonas, allí conocerá a Nadia, y juntos tendrán la aventura de sus vidas.

Me encanto la historia por varias razones, es una travesía a tierras fantásticas y peligrosas al estilo de Julio Verne, que se desarrolla en las selvas de mi tierra Venezuela, tiene algo de magia y misticismo, y habla de las culturas autóctonas de mi país, si bien es algo inocente en algunos puntos con respecto a los indígenas, no deja por ello de ser un libro juvenil muy bueno, a la altura de varias de las sagas que están de moda en la actualidad.

Lo que mas me gusto fue el personaje de Alex y como se desarrollo a través de la trama, todas las pruebas que tiene que superar, desde las que le presenta la vida en su hogar,las que le impone la inhóspita y salvaje selva amazónica, y la prueba que lo llevara a ser hombre y mas adelante héroe.

Es una excelente historia, de las pocas que he leído que suceden en Venezuela, por eso lo recomiendo a todos, y pronto leeré las otras dos partes de la trilogía.

Me ha tomado 10 años terminar esta trilogía y este libro tiene parte de la culpa. Digo parte xq la otra parte es mía. Tenía la mala costumbre de creer q xq un libro me gustaba, todos los libros de la misma autora me iban a gustar. Este libro me mostró lo equivocada q estaba. Y me tomó todo este tiempo reconciliarme con la idea.
Si hubiera calificado este libro cuando lo leí le habría dado menos estrellas pero ahora q terminé los otros dos, el primero de la trilogía sale ganando. Al menos en comparación con el último.
Tengo q decir - como fan de Isabel Allende - q esta trilogía no es su mejor trabajo. No deja de tener el estilo impecable de la autora pero en mi opinión se pierde demasiado en los lugares y deja demasiado de lado a las personas.
En La ciudad y las Bestias ocurre exactamente eso. Estás en pleno Amazonas, te pican las mosas, te agobia el calor, te nublan la vista los colores, te marean los olores pero...y los personajes??? De vez en cuando, una anaconda casi se come a uno de ellos y los jovencitos se vuelven animales totemicos. Y listo. La antica Kate es variopinta pero no sabemos nada de su vida, solo que ella es así y más o menos lo mismo con los demás.
Como tengo cierto TOC con empezar libro y no terminarlos - se aplica igual con las series - lo único q puedo decir es que me alivia haberme sacado esto de encima.

I have to admit that till I reached the half of the book I was quite skeptic. I thought it was the classic story about children winning in some ways against insensible adults. In the beginning actually the story is a bit disconnected in my opinion. There were a lot informations and too much on the plate. I couldn't find the purpose, the real starting point. But when I reached the third to last chapter I understood everything, all the doubts, troubles, characters, dialogues. Everything came up clear. All the words that Isabel uses have a precise aim. There is this particular that made me completely change my mind about the book: when Nadia and Alex return from the volcano and reunite with the rest of the group, it was like only with the use of adjectives, that apparently seem without profit, she clearly make them and me too understand the reality and the truth.
So in the end I have to say that this book is a revelation and I absolutely recommended it.

Una novela diferente a lo que nos tiene acostumbrada la autora, llena de aventuras y con una crítica a todo lo que ha pasado y sigue pasando en el Amazonas.

I am still in z 3rd Chapter, z 1st chapters were tragic, I shed few tears imagining z mother. then got furious and disgusted from z grandmother, I didn't like z grandmother character at all, she can't be more wicked than that!!
I'm waiting 4 z novel 2 get thrilling when they go 2 z Amazon.
but generally I like Isabelle Allende's writing style, it's simple and flowing.
I usually rate z novel when I reach Chapter 3 , but this time I won't rate it now, cuz I feel it will get better when I continue reading.
