Para todos aquellos que critican este libro por ser tan differente a todos los otros libros de Isabel Allende: No sean tontos claro que lo es es un libro para Niños y Jovenes ! que niño quiere leer algo sobre la vida desolada de alguien o de la cabeza de una madre que se encuentra en un closet del sotano o de la horrible que es perder a tu hija?? Enverdad tienen que tomar encuesta a la audiencia a la cual el libro esta dirigida. La aventura de un niño cualquiera como Alex en la Selva Amazonica donde descubre a una tribu magica de Indigenas... eso es algo que le va a interesar a un niño. Personalmente a mi me fasino este cuento y es uno de los pocos libros que he disfrutado leer en español, no esta sobre dramatisado como otras historias, y se aprende cositas interesantes sobre el Amoazonas y los Indigenas.

Le recomendo este libro para niños con pocas ganas de leer, este libro les puede abrir el apetito.

I read this book with my 12 year old son. We both quite enjoyed it, but didn't love it. It is a coming of age tale/adventure story/fantasy/eco-thriller for young adults. I think possibly it was trying to be too many things! One thing I did appreciate was the fact that the protagonist's grandmother was so far from a stereotypical granny figure in children's lit - she is a chain smoking, vodka drinking, plain talking hard as nails journalist.

Si uno hablaba el español como su primer lengua y leyó este libro, probablemente creerían que este libro era muy simple. Tendrían la razón. Sin embargo, como alguien que nunca a terminado una novela escrita en español en su vida entera, leyendo este libro fue un logro muy importante para mi. El nivel de lectura era perfecto para mi, y me gusto mucho el mundo de los indigenes de la amazona. También me encanta una historia sobre la amistad de un chica y chico que no se termina en el amor romántico. En mi opinión, no hay suficiente historias sobre la amistad entre diferente géneros.

Le doy 4/5 estrellas porque aunque algunas veces iba bien lento, me ha ayudado muchísimo con el desarrollo de mi español.

Me gustaría poder decir que me encantó, pero no es así. La historia empieza muy bella y muy al estilo de Isabel Allende, la historia me empezaba a envolver, cuando de pronto tomó un matiz demasiado increíble.
La historia trata sobre un adolescente (Alexander Coid) que tiene a su madre enferma y su familia se está desmoronando, él es enviado con su abuela a un viaje de expedición al Amazonas para investigar las apariciones de una rara criatura a la cual llaman "la Bestia", que ha estado matando a varios foráneos, esto es en una zona casi inaccesible, en medio de la espesura de la selva Amazónica. Hasta aquí todo está bien, interesante y bastante atractivo.
En este viaje, Alexander conoce a su amiga Nadia Santos, una niña que ha vivido siempre entre indígenas y en medio de la selva, ellos dos emprenden una aventura que cuenta la magia que existe en aquel lugar. Aquí es donde empezó a desentonarme un poco el libro, las cosas empiezan a ponerse demasiado "mágicas", y que, para mi gusto, no iban con la trama original.
No sé, es sólo mi punto de vista, la forma en que está narrado es espectacular, como sólo ella sabe hacerlo, pero la trama esta vez no logró enredarme al 100.
Eso no quiere decir que no me gustó por completo, también tiene muchas cosas entrelíneas, nos está relatando de como un niño va madurando de la forma más difícil, que es como la vida nos ha enseñado a todos, sólo que él lo hace en medio de un lugar mágico y de formas poco convencionales.

Me sorprendió haberlo encontrado tan francamente malo.

yikes! i love Isabel Allende so much, and the only reason i still trust her is because this book is old. But it is a white savior complex book, and as someone who lives in a colony under circumstances where people treat us and our island like a freak show, it was a weird story. i enjoyed the fantasy i wont lie, but its a story making natives look dumb, and as people who cant recognize colonialism when they’ve been fighting it for centuries. Not surprised a white woman would write this, but very disappointed and angry. Not worth reading.

When I first got that book for Christmas (and in german) a couple years ago, I really didn't knew if I should like it. At that time I did not liked reading that much. But it was a present, so I started it. And couldn't stop! I loved it. The way Isabel Allende made it so understandable how life in a Rain forest could be, and is. It is truly amazing. The story of Nadja and Alexander, how they became best friends and thought they would never see each other again after that miraculous adventure - fascinating. The only think I was really sad about is the part in the mountain.
The intoxicating plot of the main characters is opening with Alexander and the story how he came to his Grandmothers Apartment without money in NYC and why he came at all. His family is hit with illness and without ideas how to fix it they try everything. One of them is that the male Main Character is leaving with his Grandmother to the Southern American Jungle. What he doesn't know at that time is that he finds more than just a cure for his mother. He is finding himself and his totemic animal, his best friend, and the journey of his life. As soon as they touch down in Manaus he is also overwhelmed with the heat of south America. Soon he was about to meet the young Nadja, at the age of his annoying little sister, so it is wierd for him to be around her at first. But Nadja is much mature at the same age. The young soon-to-be-friends are about to start a expedition with a team of Journalists (Alex's Grandmother) and Photographers and so on. Nadjas Father is the guide for the expedition. The team is standing out to more than just one challenge and is supposed to find animals who are probably older than any human ever remembered. Within that journey both of the teens are reaching over their biggest fears and exploring new territory in their minds and untouched earth.

My friend read Isabel Allende books and she lend me this one. At first, after a few pages, I was sceptical and didn't expect much. I decided to keep on reading in any case (I cannot put a book down, even if it is bad) and I soon relized that I may have been predjudiced.

The story line was quite nice but the fact that the boy played flute certainly made an impact. I had some trouble with my commitment towards my flute playing because I didn't practice and whatever. Although him pulling his flute out and playing in the Amazon seems a bit well crazy and far-fetched it really made me want to play flute.

So this book brought my passion back for my lovely flute. I think overall there are some real inspirational thoughts and moral values portrayed in this book in an easy, understandable way. I would recommend this to everyone, even thos who do not like to read. It's an easy read with passion and adventure (what more od you need?).

An action filled Amazon adventure. Very well crafted and woven. Each character is made to feel real and believable in their reactions.

Not unexpected from such an author.
