I love Camille and I can't recommend it enough. It's become one of my favorite books. I had seen the Greta Garbo movie version of Camille and I can honestly say that the novel is more heartbreaking. Alexandre Dumas fils's writing was excellent and his tale of thwarted love is timeless.

Camille is set in 1840s Paris. A young courtesan, Marguerite Gautier, has died and although she was once the most sought-after courtesan in Paris she died of consumption without any of her rich friends or benefactors by her side. It seems everyone has forgotten Marguerite except for Armand Duval, a young man who has countless camellias sent to her grave. The novel goes back to when Armand and Marguerite were in love and willing to risk everything to be together. Fate got in the way and led to the beautiful courtesan's dying alone.

The writing style was interesting and very well done. Much like in Wuthering Heights and The Great Gatsby, the narrator was a minor character who played little part in the action. In fact, the narrator of Camille didn't even have a name. Also like Wuthering Heights, the narration changes hand when Armand tells the story of him and Marguerite. Still another part of the novel is told from Margeurite's perspective. Dumas wove these stories within stories together so skillfully that the different voices never felt forced. Camille is a classic you should definitely read. Just be prepared with a box of tissues.

"La dame aux camelias" is a tropical classic by Alexandre Dumas fils that gets deeper into the lives and fates of courtesans in France during 19th century. Many details about it made me sick,and i had to get rest from it a few times, but the love-story of the main-leads made me go on,and Dumas smart way of writing it. I had seen the film adaption "Camille" from 1936 starring Greta and Robert which i very much came to love,so much that i decided to read the book also.

I have never before read anything by Dumas despite his father Alexandre Dumas being my fathers favourite author,and me enjoying the film-adaptions of his "The Three Musketeers" since childhood. Dumas has a modern way of writing despite his time. He writes so honest, and explores the joys and unhappiness of life without being ashamed of it.While reading the swedish translation i understood that He classifies his words with a metrical sense in a very easy way for us readers to understand.

Marguerite Gautier is one of the most beautiful souls i have ever read about in the world of Classic Literature,and the carefree and young soul of Armand Duval is the one man who gives her something no other man ever have done. He is the one man who cares and cries for her well-being,has a passion that will never die...and will give her the gift of true love that becomes her very ruin.He refused to abandon her,she refused to stay with him.

Marguerite and Armand proved to selflessly love each other,and Alexander Dumas knows (peace be upon him) in what state he still has his readers by the end:in complete tears.

Bisogna aver fatto molto male prima di venire al mondo o essere destinati a una ben grande felicità dopo la morte, perché Dio permetta che questa vita abbia tutte le torture dell'espiazione e tutti i dolori della prova.

Tanta malinconia.
Tanta sofferenza.
Tanti rimpianti.
Questo libro è qualcosa di prezioso anche se un po' mi ha spezzato il cuore.

Έτσι ολοκληρώνει την αφήγηση του ο Αλέξανδρος Δουμάς(υιός) η οποία εκδόθηκε το 1848 και από τις πρώτες κιόλας σελίδες σε μεταφέρει σε εκείνη την εποχή.

Η υπόθεση λίγο πολύ γνωστή ,μιας και έχει διασκευαστεί για το θέατρο,τον κινηματογράφο και έχει αποτελέσει πηγή έμπνευσης για την Τραβιάτα του Βέρντι. Ο Δουμάς εμπνεύστηκε την ηρωίδα του,τη Μαργαρίτα Γκωτιέ, από την τραγική ιστορία της Μαρί Ντιπλεσι, μιας από τις διασημότερες εταίρες του Παρισιού , με την οποία ο ίδιος είχε ερωτικές σχέσεις.

Βαθιά μελαγχολικό,το μυθιστόρημα αυτό περιγράφει έναν έντονο έρωτα με πάθη ,εγωισμό, πόνο, εκδίκηση, αλτρουισμό,θυσίες, και πόλεμο ενάντια στα κοινωνικά κατεστημένα της εποχής. Ο συγγραφέας χρησιμοποιεί την ηρωίδα για να εξετάσει τον κοινωνικό ρόλο της γυναίκας στην εποχή του, τις προκαταλήψεις της κοινωνίας και την έννοια της πραγματικής αγάπης.

Η γραφή του Δουμά είναι συναισθηματική και δραματική, με πολλές σκηνές που προκαλούν έντονα συναισθήματα στον αναγνώστη. Το βιβλίο συνδυάζει ρομαντισμό και τραγικότητα, γεγονός που το καθιστά μια από τις πιο κλασικές ιστορίες αγάπης στην παγκόσμια λογοτεχνία.

Plain and short. This book is referred to as a love story. For me there was no romance, no passion, no love. It's a book about a woman of ill repute who used men to her advantage, monetarily and for social standing.

I very much enjoyed Alexandre Dumas fils's writing and that's why I'm rating it four stars.

This is the tragic story of the life of a courtesan, Marguerite Gautier (dubbed Camille or Lady of the Camellias for her always carrying a bouquet of the flowers), who, by willing sacrifice that could never have rewarded her in kind, proved her purity of love. It is also a lamentable apologetic story told by Armand Duval, the man who sworn love for her but judged her too harshly, too unwisely, and painfully abandoned her.

In the opening of the story, the narrator chances upon the auctioning of Camille's possessions, a process which literally began over her freshly dead body. There were no mourners at her death, and now among the remainders of a kept-woman, there are only spectators and bargain hunters. Camille truly died alone. The narrator remarks that "Marguerite was a pretty woman; but though the life of such women makes sensation enough, their death makes very little. Their death, when they die young, is heard of by all their lovers at the same moment, for in Paris almost all the lovers of a well-known woman are friends."

He meets Armand Duval who, stricken by the death of Camille, recounts his possessive love affair with the famous courtesan and the circumstances that led to her early demise.

Dumas paints a vivid portrait of Paris life in 1847, of male patrons young and old whose keeping of mistresses was the norm, of the double standards and snobbery of "decent" society.

Camille or Lady of the Camillias is a love story that may be compared to Shakespeare's tragic story of the star-crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet.
It is an autobiographical glimpse of Dumas' affair with the beautiful courtesan Marie Duplessis, written four months after her death in 1847.Throughout the story, one may easily assess the heavy guilt weighing the conscience of the famous author.

„Junger Mann aus gutem Hause verliebt sich in Starprostituierte.“ Was wie eine billige Überschrift aus der Yellow Press aussieht, weckt heutzutage eigentlich kaum Interesse, geschweige denn Empörung bei der Bevölkerung. Zur Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts war dies noch anders. Die zwielichtigen Halbwelt in Paris, ausschweifende Bälle und freizügigerer Lebensstil. Davon ließ sich wohl auch Musketier-Dumas Sohn begeistern und verliebte sich eine solche Kurtisane, die dann 23jährige verstarb und Größen wie Alexandre Dumas oder Franz Liszt trauernd zurück ließ. Dumas verarbeitete hier seine unglückliche Liebschaft.

Was mir in diesem Liebesroman gleich auf den ersten Seiten negativ auffiel, war der inflationäre Gebrauch des Begriffs „Liebe“. Über 290 mal wird von der Liebe in meiner Übersetzung vor. Insofern wirkten die ersten Bezeugungen der Zuneigung zwischen Armand und Marguierte auf mich sehr schwülstig und verklärt. Armand hatte sich unsterblich in die äußere Erscheinung der Kameliendame verliebt. Es war die reine Begierde und das Verlangen, die Schöne zu besitzen. Relativ schnell wird dem modernen Leser klar, dass die Liebe, die Armand verspürt, ins Krankhafte tendiert. Schwere Eifersucht und Wahnvorstellungen treiben den Verliebten um, der seiner Angebeteten nachstellt und dabei völlig verkennt, aus welchem Milieu sie stammt. Die Literatur war aber vor 180 Jahren noch nicht so weit, um hieraus das Psychogramm eines Kranken zu erstellen. Dumas will lediglich verdeutlichen, wie stark die Liebe sein kann und verkörpert damit die klassische, romantische Schreibschule. Leider kann man kaum eine persönliche Entwicklung bei Armand erkennen, selbst als ein Keil durch den Vater in die Liebesbeziehung getrieben wird und die Tragödie ihren Lauf nimmt. Armand bleibt blind und dreht sich mit seinen Gedanken im Kreis. Hierbei muss ich gestehen, dass Dumas dieses unreflektierte Verlangen wiederum sehr gut beschreiben kann. Während die seinerzeitige Leserschaft wahrscheinlich nur die tragische Liebesgeschichte genoß, vollzieht der moderne Leser eine Verhaltensanalyse und ist enttäuscht vom weiteren Verlauf.

Liebesdramen sind gewiß nicht mein favorisiertes Genre. Wenn sich dann Menschen so völlig gegen meiner Natur verhalten und keinen Entwicklungsprozess erleben, erlahmt mein Interesse für die Geschichte schnell. Das war hier zunächst der Fall. Unter der Berücksichtigung der sprachlichen Vielfalt bei den Szenen des Zweifelns bei Armand und der Tatsache, dass Dumas die Geschichte sehr raffiniert aufbaut, hat mir das Buch letztlich dann doch noch Freude bereitet, und ich habe es gerne zu Ende gelesen.

Felicissima di aver recuperato questo classico che narra dell'amore infelice e scandaloso tra Marguerite e Armand; romanzo che suscitò lo sdegno dei benpensanti per il modo in cui veniva denunciata l'ipocrisia del ceto borghese. Mi è piaciuto moltissimo l’impostazione del libro e la narrazione, lo stile l'ho trovato davvero scorrevole e coinvolgente, tanto che l’ho divorato in pochissimo tempo. Mi sono affezionata ai due personaggi, Marguerite è la classica donna passionale che vive grazie al guadagno altrui, mentre Armand è il tipico uomo giovane che studia e lavora e vuole la donna che gli fa battere il cuore.
