زنانی مثل مارگریت در زمان حیاتشان می‌درخشند، همه را عاشق خودشان می‌کنند و همونطور که از دیگران استفاده می‌کنند می‌گذارند همین اتفاق برای خودشان بیافتد اما بعد از مرگشان و دو سه روز سوگواری همه فراموش می‌کنند زمانی بوده که با درخشش این زنان کور شده بودند و آن‌ها را با چراغ‌هایی سوخته یکی می‌دانند، چراغی که اگرچه زمانی به آن نیازمند بودند زود جایگزینی پیدا می‌کند و در سطل زباله فراموش می‌شود.
مارگریت با وجود همچین سرنوشتی موفق شد عشق حقیقی‌اش را پیدا کند ولی متأسفانه قرار نبود عشقشان فرجامی داشته باشد.

Were this book not written from the perspective of Armand, I think I would have liked it a great deal more, but as it stands, I find him a dull narrator. There are countless instances where he drills into the reader how childlike and spoiled Marguerite is and I just to kick him because he's the idiot who can barely make heads or tales of his surroundings or the actions others take to protect him. It's also dumb how neither one of these lovers trusts the other

All in all, I wish the whole book were from Marguerite's point of view (given that her purity of feeling is the subject of the book) or maybe third-person, but still it was an enjoyable read with a strong ending.

Alexandre Dumas (hijo), vio su obra magna publicada por primera vez en 1848 que según el propio autor está inspirada en un hecho real de su vida y de un romance que tuvo. Aunque forma parte del movimiento literario del realismo, esta fue una de las primeras novelas que formarían parte de la transición hacia el romanticismo. Este año estoy (y los que vienen) centrándome en leer todos aquellos clásicos franceses que tengo pendientes y este era uno de ellos, y qué buena decisión leerlo porque ha sido todo un gran y fascinante descubrimiento.

El narrador de la novela conoce la muerte de una mujer que no le era del todo desconocida, ve que se subastan sus pertenencias e inevitablemente se siente atraído a conocer más detalles sobre ella. Esto lo llevará a conocer a Armand Duval, un joven que se muestra destrozado ante la pérdida de su gran amor, Marguerite. A partir de entonces, viviremos a través del relato de este último, cuál fue la verdadera historia y vida de Marguerite Gautier (también apodada La dama de las camelias), nuestra indiscutible y amada protagonista.

Los temas principales de la novela y que quiero destacar son la prostitución, los prejuicios sociales que rechazan a Marguerite, el romanticismo y los celos desmedidos de un amante apasionado. Pero no solo hallaremos eso, también seremos participes de una relación tormentosa, de decisiones precipitadas, de llantos y tragedias que oprimen el corazón acompañados de un estilo narrativo magnífico, ligero y profundamente bello.

Si me he dado cuenta de una cosa al leer más literatura francesa clásica, es que los personajes femeninos son muy diferentes a los que encontraremos en la literatura inglesa. Siempre nos muestran una mujer diferente, imperfecta, que puede cometer adulterio (Madame Bovary, Indiana, Rojo y negro…) y en este caso que ejerce la prostitución, algo que en la época conllevaba un señalamiento público. Admiro la valentía de escritores y escritoras franceses que lejos de temer que se les juzgara, apostaban por mostrar una realidad incómoda y tabú.

Sin lugar a dudas estamos ante una de mis mejores lecturas del año, que ha conseguido emocionarme, sentir y disfrutar aunque también debo decir que he sufrido con el tramo final. La angustia y dolor que emanan las últimas páginas, esas cartas que nunca obtuvieron respuesta y que ofrecen un reflejo exacto y preciso de una protagonista que queda anclada en la memoria. Uno de esos clásicos de la literatura francesa que hay que leer y que poco veo que se se valore como merece.

كم من الجمال والسمو وتنوع الأحاسيس التي تثور في القارئ من الممكن أن يقدم الأدب الراقي النفيس؟؟! كم هي رائعة هذه الرواية...حقا استحقت أن يذكرها دوستويفسكي في رواية (الأبله) ونفهم أنه هو أيضا كان من المتأثرين بها كثيرا حين صمم شخصية (ناستازيا فيليبوفنا) في الرواية المذكورة....
إن من وظائف الأدب ان يتناول من القضايا الحياتية المهمة، ويقدمها للمجتمع، ويحاول أن ينظر للأمور بعين المصلح والحكيم، وبذلك تسير الازمان وتتغير المجتمعات بعد أن تهظم ما يقدمه لها الأدب، فنرى في بيئة هذه الروايات –وأقصد اوروبا والغرب بصورة عامة- تتغير المجتمعات، ولا يعود الناس ينظرون الى هذه الأمور المذكورة النظرة الكلاسيكية نفسها...ونرى مثلا روايات تتناول قضية الإعدام-على سبيل المثال-، ونرى النتيجة التي وصلوا لها الان من انقراض هذا الحكم القاسي في الكثير من الدول...
لكن مع الأسف نحن هنا في الشرق تبقى العادات والتقاليد البالية قوية والحاكم الأوحد، ويبقى كلام الناس والسمعة وغيرها اشياء لا يمكن لاي أدب لا عالي ولا رخيص أن يغير من نظرتنا لها قيد أنملة!!! نحن ندرس العلوم ونقرأ كتب الأدب ونبقى على نفس الحال.

هذه الرواية درة من درر الأدب من كل النواحي..وتستحق كل الشهرة والأسم البراق والمكان المميز لها بين كل كتب الأدب.

The Lady of the Camellias" by Alexandre Dumas ( son) was first published in 1848. The story is about Marguerite Gautier, a beautiful courtesan in Paris who falls in love with a young provincial bourgeois, Armand Duval. The novel is a tragic love story exploring themes of the society harsh judgments, reputation, and sacrifice.

The character of Marguerite Gautier was based on a real-life courtesan named Marie Duplessis, with whom Dumas had a brief and intense affair.

The lady with camellias is the classic tale of a prostitute who falls in love and decides to leave her past behind, in order to be with the only man she loves for real, even though everything seems to be against that love story.
Written by Alexandre Dumas fils during the 19th century, it is said that this has some autobiographical elements in it. And boy, if that's actually the case, I do feel sorry for the author and the woman he fell in love with.

To be honest, I kinda expected to enjoy this more than I did, given the fact that everyone raves about it and one of my favorite movies (Moulin Rouge) is based on it.

But see, I wouldn't call it bad either. The story itself is interesting and the characters, at times, seem complex.

But as expected, there were parts of it that I didn't like.
I wasn't a fan of the dialogue, which seemed too formal for me. I also wasn't a fan of the protagonist telling us over and over how in love him and Marguerite were but not quite showing it. Plus, the way he treated Marguerite after they had broken up, was inexcusable.

Another thing I didn't like, had to do with the characters of Pridance and Arman's father not being acknowledged as the manipulators they were. Well, Pridance actually was but the latter was not. He went to extreme lengths to break the pair apart and I don't care how many times Marguerite said that he is a good man, I have my reasons to disagree.

I also don't know how to feel about the way the author talks about prostitutes, because he seems to go back and forth in defending them, because most of them were forced into that way of life and vilifying them by calling them immoral and ungrateful...

Overall, my feelings towards this book are a bit lukewarm, but obviously, I have no reason to apologize, since this is my opinion and my opinion alone.

If you made it this far, congratulations! Writing this review felt a bit weird. I feel like my writing skills have gone a little rusty and it feels like it's been ages since the last time I posted a book review...

"Η Κυρία με τις Καμέλιες"

Όταν ένα βιβλίο σε κάνει να χάνεις την αίσθηση του χρόνου, σε βάζει στη διαδικασία να μη δίνεις καμία σημασία σε ό,τι γίνεται γύρω σου, σου ξυπνά συναισθήματα χαράς, αγάπης, έρωτα προσμονής, θυμού, απόγνωσης, στενοχώριας τότε ναι, είναι ένα μικρό διαμάντι!!!

Υπέροχη, γλαφυρή γραφή! Ήρωες ανθρώπινοι με έντονα συναισθήματα, ζουν την κάθε στιγμή, τον πόθο, αντιμετωπίζουν τις δυσκολίες κ τα πάθη τους. Κλαίνε, πονάνε, χαίρονται, θυμώνουν, εκδικούνται, χάνουν την αξιοπρέπειά τους, παρακαλούν αλλά κ εκλιπαρούν για μια δόση αγάπης.

Συναισθηματικά φορτισμένες εικόνες, απώλειες, μυρωδιές και χρώματα...

Ένα βιβλίο που ενώ η ιστορία του θα μπορούσε να χαρακτηριστεί χιλιοειπωμένη, η έκρηξη των αισθήσεων που σου προκαλεί αναιρεί κάθε αρνητική κ άστοχη κριτική του τύπου "ρομάντζο" , χλιαρό και βαρετό.

کی گفته که "مادام کاملیا" داستانِ یک فاحشه است؟

قصه ی زنی که به عشق باور نداره و ارزش خودشو نمی دونه و اما "آرمان" ... آیا اون میتونه عشق واقعی رو به "مارگریت" هدیه کنه؟ بهش نشون بده ارزشش بالاتر از رفع نیازِ مردانی هست که فقط برای خودخواهی بهش توجه دارن؟

L'amore è eterno (finché dura)

Ieri, dopo aver terminato di leggere Il diavolo in corpo di Raymond Radiguet mi è venuto da pensare alla gelosia di Armand.
Accidenti, Armand, ma come fai ad essere così stupido e cieco da non capire che Marguerite sta sacrificando tutto per te? Come fai a pensare che non ti ami più: mi sembri Ridge con Brooke che si giurano amore eterno e un attimo dopo si chiedono: - "Ma tu mi ami ancora?".
Come tutti i poco esperti di Lirica sono sempre stata pucciniana e penso che niente sia travolgente come la Tosca ma, se avrò l'occasione, cercherò di andare a vedere anche la Traviata.



[edit - 1 Novembre 2011 - E poi, riflettevo sul fatto che Armand dubita dell'amore di Marguerite perché in fondo lui continua a considerarla una mantenuta e nonostante continui a professare il suo amore per lei non riesca ad affrancarla dalla sua vita precedente il loro rapporto. Solo così, con il sacrificio, riuscirà a vederla, purificata, in una nuova luce.]

Rất thích các đoạn đối thoại của Marguerite. Vừa tinh nghịch, thông minh, vừa đàn bà, nồng nàn, vừa có gì đó trong sáng, ngây thơ như chính con người nàng vậy. Ấn tượng nhất là cha của Armand, một người đàn ông quyền quý nhưng có trái tim vô cùng nhân hậu. Và gây ức chế nhất trong tác phẩm là Armand, đàn ông gì mà trẻ con yếu đuối, ghen tuông vớ vẩn.

Ai muốn đọc truyện nhớ mua bản dịch của Hải Nguyên, tuy tên nhân vật bị phiên âm nhưng lời văn cực thu hút, đọc mà không thể ngừng lại. Chứ bản dịch của Nhã Nam trên Tiki nhiều người chê.

10/12/20. Update: After discussing this novel with others in book club I want to add here that everyone found the book to be melodramatic and I was the only one to listen to the book. So, perhaps the narrator did not add extra melodrama.


The Lady of the Camelias is a French romantic tragedy published in 1848 by Alexandre Dumas, fils, the 23 year old son of Alexandre Dumas. This is a story very much of it’s time, raising the issue of the narrow choices available to women and the necessity of their financial dependence on men and the tragedy that can befall women due to this dependence. The narrator of the audio version told the story in a very melodramatic style. I am not sure if the novel was written so dramatically or not but most of the time the narrator's tone was over the top (which pulled me out of the story and had me checking how many chapters were left). I found this very annoying since the story itself provides more than enough melodrama.

Marguerite is a beautiful courtesan called the lady of the camelias because she wears a red camelia when she is menstruating and unavailable to her lovers and a white camelia when she is available. She is a “kept woman” by a elderly rich man until Arnaud arrives on the scene and the two fall in love. Arnaud falls rapturously in love at first sight due to her beauty, while Marguerite is more cautious and practical, needing to be sure that her expenses will be paid. Arnaud has little money compared to the man who currently pays her bills. Thus begins the doomed love affair. The ups and downs of the relationship are full of love, happiness, jealousy and pathos. The ending is very moving,.

It is easy to see why this dramatic and moving story became the basis for many plays, movies and operas, eg. La Traviata by Verdi.

عاشت حياة صاخبة و بكل رفاهية يملؤها الترف واللامبالاة !

كانت مشهورة في وسطها بالجميلة مرافقة رجال من الطبقة النبيلة و من الطبقة الأرستقراطية !
عاشت بغيا مومسا كما كان يقال عنها و الكل يعلم ذالك ، وقعت في الحب و عاشت قصة حب حزينة و قصيرة العمر كعمرها تماما فقد فارقت الحياة في عمر الزهور بسبب مرض فتك بصحتها العليلة و انتهت حياتها ولم يحضر جنازتها إلاّ رجلان حبيبها الشاب و الكهل الذي إعتبرها كإبنته المتوفاة في بادءئ الأمر و تحولت لمرافقته بعد ذالك.
