رواية فاقت كل توقعاتي في العظمة، ولا فيلم ولا ثقافة شعبية ولا أي شيء قادر يوفيها ما تستحقه.

أجلتها كثيرًا ووضعتها على قائمة الانتظار أكثر من مرة لأكثر من عذر، إما خوفًا من ض��امة الثلاثية وألا يتسع الوقت لإتمامها، وإما خوفًا من سقف التوقع شديد الإرتفاع تجاه تحفة نجيب الخالدة وأعظم ما كتب بإجماع آلاف القراء؛ مرت السنوات والأيام، وها أنا وسط أيام وليالي عملي بين جدران المستشفيات، على بعد أمتار من عنابر المرضى، وسط روائح التعقيم والتخدير وأصوات أجهزة التنفس وثرثرة التمريض التي لا تنقطع، أكسر مخاوفي كلها وأغوص بكياني بين صفحات الجزء الأول هاربًا من كل الصخب الذي طالما أنهكني، فأنهل من منبع السحر المحفوظي كظمآن فاز بشربة ماء باردة وسط صحراء شاسعة، ضاربًا بظروف عملي وانشغالي عرض الحائط، ولاعنًا المرات العديدة التي أجلت فيها قراءة كل هذا الجمال والكمال.

هي درة التاج المحفوظي بالفعل، تستحق كل ما سمعته عنها من إشادة ومدح، بأسلوب سرد ساحر وتجلّي منقطع النظير في رسم التفاصيل أخرجني محفوظ من عالمي وحاضري إلى عالمه الخاص، حيث الحارة المصرية بتفاصيلها التي أعشقها والتي تفنن في رسمها، بقصة درامية إجتماعية بسيطة التفاصيل عميقة المعاني، وشخصيات تنبض بالحياة فتكاد تراها مجسدة أمام عينيك من لحمٍ ودم لا مجرد خيال، والشخصيات هي أكثر ما جذبني في هذا العمل وهذا الجزء تحديدًا، لأنني طالما كانت لديّ مخاوف تجاه الأعمال كبيرة الحجم أن تكون مسرحًا مزدحمًا بالشخصيات الرئيسية والثانوية التي تُصعّ�� من تجربة القراءة بكثرة القصص الفرعية والأسامي والخطوط الجانبية، والتي لو لم يحسن الكاتب غزلها لوضع القارئ في عقدة وجعله يعاني كي يتابع سرد الحكاية، لكن ما وجدته هنا كان العكس تمامًا، فالشخصيات قليلة العدد غزيرة التفاصيل محكمة الرسم، فكان الانبهار والدهشة هما سيدا الموقف طوال ما يقارب ستمائة صفحة.

والمذهل أكثر، هو بساطة القصة في مجملها كما ذكرت، والتي ربما تحكيها في خمس دقائق وأنت تحتسي كوبًا من الشاي مع صديقك، لكنك بلا شك ستحكيها بجفاف وستفقدها تفاصيلها الساحرة، مهما فعلت لن تصل إلى سر خلطة محفوظ الخاصة التي صنعت من الحكاية العادية شيئًا استثنائيًا بديعًا في تكوينه مبهرًا في طريقة عرضه، لطالما أقول ويقول معظم القراء أن واحدة من أهم مميزات الكاتب الاستثنائي أن يمتلك الموهبة على تحويل العادي إلى غير عادي، هذا ما تجلّى هنا بكل وضوح.

إجمالًا، هي واحدة من الروايات التي تُقرأ وكفى، لا تحتاج لحديث مطوّل فقير وعاجز عن إبراز مواطن جمالها، واحدة من الروايات التي تجعلك تشكر الله وتحمده حمدًا كثيرًا على أن زرع في قلبك وعقلك نعمة حب القراءة التي بفضلها تغوص مرارًا في عوالم محفوظ الساحرة منتشيًا بما يقدمه قلمه من ملاحم روائية قلّما يجود علينا التاريخ بمثلها.

PALACE WALK by Naguib Mahfouz, tr. from Arabic (Egypt) by William Maynard Hutchins and Olive E. Kenny / 1956 Arabic, 1990 English.

Mahfouz's first book in his famed Cairo Trilogy impressed me in it's scope, even if it took a few pages for me to "warm up" fully to it. At 500 pages, the book spends several short chapters setting the scene and introducing the large Al-Jawad family. Once that was set in my mind, I was easily drawn into this story.

Palace Walk follows al-Sayyid Ahmad and his wife Amina, and their 5 children - 2 daughters and 3 sons through several years of the British Protectorate in Egypt (early 20th century). Al-Sayyid Ahmad is a tyrannical hypocritical patriarch, lording over his wife and children within the four walls of their home on Palace Walk in downtown Cairo. Yet, outside of these walls, he is a shopkeeper with a penchant for alcohol and parties, despite his facade of being a devout and traditional Muslim. This disconnect of who he is, and who he wants everyone to think he is forms the tension at the heart of the novel - affecting all members of his family for years to come.

Large portions or this book read like a soap opera - funny antics, affairs, arranged marriages, but also heavy with harrowing events and abuse. It reads pretty swiftly with short chapters and lots of dialogue.

Mahfouz spends a lot of time with his characters. The shades and hues of each person - what drives them, their flaws, their passions. Palace Walk delves into this family and all the sadness, the inequity, but also finds the moments of tenderness and love between sisters, mothers/sons, brothers, etc.

عالم نجيب محفوظ كأَنه البَحرُ في أَحشائِهِ الدُرُّ كلما غوصت فيه تزداد انبهار .
استمتعت بالروايه واندمجت فيها حتى كنت جزء منها وكنت اتمنى الا تنتهى .
من ذكرياتى الجميلة انى خريج مدرسة خليل اغا الثانوية المدرسة التى درس فيها كمال
وعودت اليها مرة اخرى فى شبابى ودرست فيها معهد الخطوط العربية .

ملحمة فعلاً؛ أقل ما يُقال عنها..

لا استطيع غير التعبير عن ندمي علي عدم قراءة هذه التحفة الفنية اللتي أبدع فبها نجيب محفوظ والتي ��شعر اني لن أستطيع ايفائها حقها في تلك المراجعة
فقد أبدع نجيب في سرد الحياة اليومية لأسرة السيد أحمد عبدالجواد ووصف شخصيات تلك الأسرة التي لا تخلو من تناقضات بين أفرادها وازدواجية في شخصياتهم حيث تجد رب الأسرة الرجل اللطيف مع أصدقائه وجلسته مع أصدقائه وسهرهم الذي لا يخلو من الضحك والنكات وتجده في منزله شديد البأس مع ابنائه وزوجته ,وتراه عابدا مؤمنا لا يفرط في فرض وفي نفس الوقت معاقرا للخمر ومحبا للنساء .
وتجد أمينة ابنة الشيخ المجاور التي تؤمن بالأحجبة والخرافات والتي لا تعصي امرا لزوجها رغم معاملته السيئة لها , و خديجة الابنة الكبري سليطة اللسان وغيرتها من أختها عائشة بسبب تفوقها عليها جمالا الا انها تخفي طيبة قلبها وتحب اخوانها جميعهم .
أما ياسين فهو الابن الاكبر للسيد من زوجة سابقة وورث عن أبيه مافيه من حب للنساء وشرب الخمور ولكن لم يرث حكمة أبيه الشديدة وحذره , وفهمي الذي ظهر معه الجانب الأهم من الرواية فهو طالب في مدرسة الحقوق وعضوٌ في لجنة الطلبة , ومشارك في جماعة من الجماعات السرية المطالبة بارجاع سعد زغلول من منفاه واستقلال مصر حيث خرجت المظاهرات واشتعل لهيب الثورة في القلوب و ارتوت الشوارع بدماء الشهداء وامتلأت البيوت حزنا علي فقداهم الذين ستتألم لفقدهم.
انهي هذه المراجعة وأنا ادرك أن هذه الرواية ستكون من أفضل قراءات السنة و أرشحها بشدة لمن لم يقرأها .

I have wanted to read this classic for a very long time, but was always hesitant to pick it up. What if I don't get it, the way I didn't enjoy and understand Doctor Zhivago or Midnight's Children? Palace Walk is also quite a big book, so I kept putting it off. Until I made it a priority to read it before 2018 ends. Wow, how mistaken I was! This book is so readable, the characters are so vivid and the plot was easy to follow. I love family sagas that are juxtaposed to the development of a nation/country. They really make the best historical fictions I find.

Palace Walk is the home of al-Sayyid Ahmad Abd al-Jawad. He lives there with his submissive wife Amina and five of his children; Yasin, Fahmy, Khadija, Aisha and Kamal. Yasin is actually the son of Ahmad's first wife, whom he divorced and then married Amina, who is more accepting of his tyrannical ways. Amina and the kids live in fear and respect of Ahmad, who actually displays a double personality. In front of his family, he is stern and demanding, but to his friends, he shows an easy-going, bon vivant personality. To his family, he pretends to be religious, but with his friends, he doesn't hesitate to drink and engage in adulterous affairs.

We witness Amina's quiet suffering and how she copes with it by being very religious. Yasin has inherited his father's indulgent ways. Fahmy is a law student with ideal views. Khadija is the sharp-tongued daughter, whose huge nose might pose a problem in the search of a marriage partner. Aisha is the lazy and beautiful blonde daughter everybody adores. Kamal is still a young boy, who inherited his father's singing voice unbeknownst to everybody. We follow the first four children's transition from youth to adulthood and marriage.

The reason I'm taking off 0.5 stars, is because the demonstrations described in the second half of the book were a bit slow-going for me. I was more interested in the family drama. But I enjoyed learning indirectly about Egypt's early modern history. I find that as long as it doesn't take away too much space of the family's story, it will hold my interest. At first, I wasn't sure if I would read the sequel of Palace Walk, but the ending was so intense, that I really want to know what is going to happen next to this family.

السيد أحمد عبدالجواد - او سي السيد- و الذي بات مرادفاً لكل أشكال السلطة الزوجية الجائرة في مقابل "أمينة" كصورة حية تنبض بالحياة لكل صور الخنوع و السلبية، اصبح أسمهما مضرب الأمثال في وطن عربي طالما عاني من السلطة الجائرة و تبعات الخنوع
بالطبع لم يقصد نجيب محفوظ التركيز على تلك الشخصيات فقط، بل كان الهدف الأكبر بناء رواية أجيال متكاملة لأول مرة في تاريخنا العربي ترصد التغير الشامل الذى أصاب الأسرة المصرية عبر العصور و الذى يصل أحياناً إلى حد التناقض
للرواية أبعاد تاريخية أيضاً لا تقل أهمية، الرواية تستعرض أحداث ثورة 1919و ما تبعها من أيقاظ للوعي الوطني بعد طول سبات، و توحيد لكل طبقات المجتمع خلف هدف أكبر، و آثار ذلك على الحياة الأجتماعية لاحقاً
رواية رائعة تستحق أن تصنف كأحد أفضل الأعمال الروائية الخالدة في أدبنا العربي

ماذا أقول وأي شيء يُقال بعد كل ما قيل

The story of a tyrannical father in Cairo at the time of World War I. He belongs to the ultraconservative Muslim Hanbali sect. His wife sits outside his bedroom door each morning waiting to be called in to help him dress. His four children, two girls, three boys, kiss his hand each morning. He keeps his boys in line by beating them on the soles of their feet. His children and his wife cannot ask him a question unless they first ask his permission to speak. They call him ‘sir,’ even his wife. And yet they all think and say they love him.



The patriarch is 45; his wife is 39. She married him when she was 14. He says to his wife “You’re just a woman, and no woman has a fully developed mind.” She and her daughters are basically prisoners in their house. A maid goes to market and does errands. They do not attend religious services. The only exceptions are twice a year visits, accompanied by the man, to his wife’s mother’s house, and rare visits to a next-door neighbor’s home. His wife considers his drinking his single evil. She thinks even the women he consorts with are better than what his father did – take multiple wives.

He owns a goods shop to which he goes everyday to keep the books. He does not reappear at home until after his carousing with his good male friends, booze and women (despite his supposed strong religious beliefs). Outside the home, he’s the life of the party. His wife waits up for him to help him to bed.

His eldest son, a legal secretary, was born to another woman he divorced. Of course in that culture, the child stays with the father. The son, now in his early 20’s, and his father, are disgusted by the fact that the boy’s mother has had two other husbands since the divorce and is considering a third marriage. The oldest boy gets married but he is just like his father in his drinking and womanizing. But the new wife won’t put up with him. Essentially the oldest son takes too much after his father. When the young man’s wife asks for a divorce, the oldest son thinks: “There was nothing strange about a man casting out a pair of shoes, but shoes were not supposed to throw away their owner.”



There’s a lot of action that keeps the story moving, almost like a soap opera. There are three weddings. Two daughters move out; a daughter-in-law moves in. The youngest boy is always in trouble with childish adventures. The middle son, a law school student, secretly take part in the demonstrations for Egyptian independence and he hands out leaflets. While his father supports the petition for independence, his son has to keep his activities secret from his father. The British military sets up an encampment in their street (Palace Walk) to clamp down on demonstrations. The Egyptians are particularly upset by the brutality of Australian soldiers. (It’s WW I, so the Australians are helping Britain hold on to its colonies while the regular British army fights in Europe.)

The story ends in a tragedy.

There is good writing:

“…for love is like health. It is taken lightly when present and cherished when it departs.”

“When you son grows up, make him your brother.”

Some nitpicking: why give us three characters with the names Zubayda, Zanuba and Zaynab?



The author, Naguib Mahfouz, is regarded as the classic man of Egyptian letters and the one who brought the modern novel to Egyptian readers. Mahfouz has been compared to the giants of nineteenth-century European realism such as Dickens and Balzac. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1988. (And the author was stabbed in the neck by a religious fanatic, carrying out a fatwa because of the heresy of his writings. The author survived) Most of his novels are about modern Egypt and he is best known for his Cairo Trilogy. Many of his novels are set in small neighborhoods that are worlds unto themselves such as this book, Midaq Alley (which I reviewed) and his Cairo Trilogy.

All in all, a very good read. It’s a long book (500 pages) but it’s fascinating to learn the daily details of how an Egyptian household lived at this time, even if it was not a typical household. There is a lot of action, as I said above, like a soap opera, so that keeps the story moving.

وكأن الأسرة المحكي عنها في الكتاب استضافت نجيب محفوظ لرسم فصول حياتها، فدخل بينهم واستشربهم معرفتاً وعلماً بكنه حياتهم.

تعرف؟......لما تتفرج على لوحة فنية وبعدين تشدك تفصيلة وتقول في نفسك. "يابن الايه..ازاي فكرت في التفصيلة ديه؟".. اهو بقى فصول الكتاب ده عباره عن ألواح فنية مليئة بالتفاصيل التي تبهر روحك وتأنس بها نفسك. هذا هو الفنان نجيب محفوظ..ملك التفاصيل...لو مكنش كاتب كان حيكون رَسّام..مش معقول!! الألواح الفنيه التي تصدر والتي تشبك مع خيالك ف تغذيه وتزيده فن وحياه..

التحدي

التحدي يكمن في اللغة التي تطير بك إلى مستوى عالي بسبب كم الكلمات العربية العريقة التي تصف كل حاله احتاج الى وصفها نجيب محفوظ.
لن تكون قرائتك سريعة بسبب العرقلة في الكلمات الجديدة.

في فصول لاحقة من الكتاب تَنَدّتْ صفحاته بالتاريخ بذكرٍ عن سعد زغلول و رسالته للانجليز و رسالة الوفد للسلطان ثم نفيه و ما كان من أثر الفرح والعزَّة ثم الكدر والاحباط على الأسرة التي استعان الكاتب بمشاعرهم لتكون مرآة عاكسةً حال الأسر المصرية في تلك الأوقات التاريخية الهامة ثم انتقل الى الثورة معبراً عن حما وطيسها وحماس ابناءها.

كَمْ يتصالح عقلك مع كلمات الكاتب، فيجعل من كل كلمه صورة ذهنية فما تلبث الا ان تعترف بجمال الأوقات التي تمضيها مع الكتاب
