This is such a well-crafted book in its structure and language that I may have to re-read it now that I just finished it.

A grand wedding. A gruesome murder. And a multitude of lives changed forever. Chronicle of a Death Foretold is a novella which recounts a fictionalized account inspired by an actual incident of honor-killing in Colombia back in 1951, now immortalized in this 1981 novella.

The story is about the series of events leading up to a murder, and its aftermath. It is written in pseudo-journalistic style in the form of interviewed accounts staged 20 years after the tragedy. The more fantastic aspects of the novel are that the victim is made to be a Jesus-like figure, so much so that his death is almost likened to crucifixion. One can also relate to the theatrics of the death of Julius Caesar while reading this story.

bunu temel seviyede şöyle anlatabilirim, alkolün seni etkilemeye başladığı an hoşbulduk demek geliyor mu mesela içinden? o bilindik teslim oluyorum galiba hissi, nefesteki alkol kokusu, görüşte bulanıklık, algıda boş vermişlik.

bir, vaha sanki alkollü sen hali, öyle değil mi?

alkol yerine daha az uyarıcı olan kahveyi de düşünebilirsin pekala.

There’s a kind of cheap thrill to dishing out one star to a Nobel prize winner and a guy I previously gave 5 stars to for the brilliant One Hundred Years of Solitude, but it has to be done because on a sentence by sentence level this this thin story in a thin book is as dull as ditchwater which has lost the will to live, all about some honor killing but of a guy not a woman, the alleged deflowerer of a returned bride. Yeah, we are in a society where if the bride isn’t a virgin she’s returned – “this one’s secondhand, I ordered new, I want my money back”, so the brothers of the unfortunately-all-too-consummated sister go and shoot the alleged deflowerer. I didn’t care who shot who or how many chickens were cooked or how or what the dress looked like or why or how many complicated street festivals there were for who knew what obscure saints and who saw who do what at 3.32 on the fateful afternoon or which sisters of which family were able to levitate and how many times the brothers told everybody and his uncle and his uncle’s uncle that they were going to shoot Santiago Nasar and when and how and where and which and why nobody called the cops and all this and that. But that's just me, I hope you like it.

آمن الجميع بحماقة هيتشكوك أحد أهم المخرجين السينمائيين في العالم عندما قرر أن يقتل بطلة فيلمه الجديد بعد عشرين دقيقة و لم يحُل بينه و بين ذلك رفض شركة الإنتاج تمويل فيلمه الشهير " سايكو " الذي حقق نجاحاً عظيماً فيما بعد - إن لم يعدّ أكثر أفلامه نجاحاً -.

ماركيز ضارباً بالتشويق عرض الحائط يكتب بالسطر الأول نهاية روايته التي يقول عنوانها كل شيء تقريباً. بل يكرر ذلك في مقاطع أخرى بشيء من الاستفزاز. سانتياغو نصار المنحدر من أصول عربية يلقى مصرعه بأبشع ما يمكن حيث يتم تقطيعه إرباً بسكاكين خاصة بقتل الخنازير على يد الأخوين فيكاريو - بداعي الشرف - فالأخت التي عادت صبيحة اليوم التالي لزواجها المهيب و الذي كان الزواج الأشهر في القرية لم تكن عذراء. و بتحريض من خمر القصب و الحنق يخرج الأخوان بسكاكينهم الخاصة ليعلنوا للجميع بما في ذلك العمدة و الكولونيل و الكاهن و بقية أفراد القرية عن نية القتل. البعض لا يؤمن بقدرتهم على ذلك و البعض الآخر يعتقد أن لا حاجة لتحذيره فلم يحدث أن قُتِل أحدهم بهذه الدعايات الخرقاء. بينما تصمت البقية بكل لامبالاة و سلبية. حتى الكولونيل بكل وداعة قام بتجريدهم من أسلحتهم و صرفهم للنوم عندما التقى بهم قبيل حدوث الفاجعة بساعتين. عندما يقتلونه لاحقاً سنجدهما يركضان إلى الكنيسة للاعتراف ببرائتهما و بجريمة القتل أيضاً. ليس لدافع الشرف فقط بل لأنهما قد أخبرا الجميع و لم يثنهما أحد عن فعلتهما تلك! بكل كانا قد نصبا كمينهما في المكان الذي يمكَن الجميع من رؤيتهما و ياللسخرية فهو نفس المكان الذي من المستبعد جداً أن يسلك سنتياغو الطريق المؤدي إليه. و ماركيز إذ يتسائل عن القدر و مصير الإنسان و عاقبة أعماله لن يمنحك الفرصة حتى لتطمئن إلى أن سنتياغو نصار هو من هتك عذريتها. في الرواية يلقى اللوم بالكامل على المجتمع و يدين تصاعد العنف البشري و الوحشية التي لا يكف الإنسان عن تطويرها. استغرقت كتابة هذه الرواية ثلاثة عقود! لا، لم يكن يكتبها طوال تلك الفترة. بل كان يحملها في جنبه فسنتياغو ليس سوى كيتانو خينتلي صديق ماركيز المقرب! و الأخوين فيكاريو هما في الحقيقة تشيكا! و قد توسلت والدة ماركيز أن لا يدوّن هذه الأحداث في روايته و قد أطاعها حتى قضت أغلب الشخصيات الحقيقية نحبها - و إن تقدم عليه أحدهم بدعوى خاسرة في المحاكم الكولومبية مطالباً بتعويض لا يقل عن نصف مليون دولار -. فالرواية في طبعتها الأولى تجاوزت مليونين نسخة في رقم قياسي و فريد من نوعه. الراوي هو ماركيز و إن لم يصرّح بذلك يكفي أن نتذكر أن والدة الراوي تحمل اسم والدته كما سنجد ميرثيدس زوجته و أخته المفضلة مارغوت و أخويه أيضاً.

رواية عبقرية تزيد عن المئة صفحة و ما لا يمكنني نسيانه أبداً هو مشهد سنتياغو نصار حين تأتيه الأصوات تدعوه للحذر من كل جانب و هو يمضي بكل عزم نحو الفاجعة.

Mi escritor colombiano favorito, Gabriel García Márquez, publicó en 1981 “Crónica de una muerte anunciada”. Estamos ante uno de los libros más conocidos de Gabo, una especie de reconstrucción e investigación periodística que mezcla opiniones con declaraciones de los testigos de un crimen. Tuve el placer de descubrir al autor cuando era una adolescente con esta joya de la literatura pero con el transcurrir de los años se fue desdibujando de mi mente hasta que por fin he tenido el placer de revivirla en esta segunda y ansiada relectura.

Narrada en primera persona, la historia se sitúa en un pequeño pueblo en la costa del Caribe, nos explica los hechos que sucedieron antes, durante y después de un brutal homicidio, el que acaba con la vida de Santiago Nasar. Este es un joven vecino que será perseguido por los hermanos Vicario que buscan cobrar venganza, pues su hermana, recién casada y descubierta, culpa a Nasar de haber sido el causante de que no haya llegado virgen al matrimonio. La cuestión es que horas antes de haberse cometido el asesinato, todo el pueblo sabe lo que los hermanos traen entre manos y nadie es capaz de evitarlo a pesar de que siempre guardas ese chispa de esperanza.

En esta obra, a pesar de ser breve, nos encontraremos con una gran cantidad de personajes, tal y como nos tiene acostumbrados Márquez. El escritor sorprende empezando la novela por su final, continúa, sin seguir ningún orden cronológico, saltando en el tiempo y en los maravillosos testimonios de los diferentes personajes. Dotando al texto de un lenguaje que potencia la violencia narrada explícitamente en el libro, el autor nos sumerge en una narración dura, brutal y con algunas escenas escalofriantes. Pero también hallaremos su tono irónico y humorístico habitual, denuncia contra el machismo y un recorrido emotivo por la vida de todos sus protagonistas.

Los temas principales que hallaremos son el honor, la venganza, un choque entre la casualidad y el destino, la superstición de los pueblos y sin duda la violencia. En este rompecabezas tampoco faltaran unas magistrales descripciones, abundantes diálogos, todo ello con un registro directo y en ocasiones coloquial. El toque de realismo mágico, pequeño pero siempre presente, me ha encantado, siempre le otorga un toque especial sus historias. Lo que me ha resultado bastante curioso es que nunca conocemos al narrador, no sabemos su nombre, aunque sí conocemos los lazos que lo unen a los mencionados en el escrito.

En definitiva, esta corta novela mantiene en vilo al lector durante toda su lectura a pesar de conocer perfectamente su conclusión desde el principio. La impotencia que sientes ante la injusticia que vives en esta obra, es realmente lo que persiste en tus pensamientos una vez terminada, pero es que además te golpea tan duramente con sus descripciones, que irremediablemente visualizas todas y cada una de las escenas escabrosas que tiene. Una narración que sigue conquistándome y que tiene una calidad admirable en todos los sentidos. Pocos autores pueden decir que tienen la capacidad de escribir novelas tan breves con tanta cantidad de información, sin dejar de lado una trama alucinante y original con un final que encoge el corazón.

Ova knjiga je kao neki priručnik o lokalnom bezumlju, pohotljivosti sudbine i nekom kosmološkom principu neizbježnog. Predmet koji nanosi potpunu tišinu u vidu mesarskog noža i čast koja se njime brani biće izloženi i glasno najavljeni, a hronika nastalog će kroz jedan lavirint Markezovog pripovijedanja dobiti užeglu lakrdiju. Kao da su zatvorene sve kapije za Santjaga, kao da crveno mora poteći.

Markez ne ulazi u dubinu likova niti u njihov prostorno-vremenski kauzalitet, već na jedinstven način pokazuje čvrstinu uroćenog te kako su ljudi surovo nijemi u pojedinim važnim trenucima, čak do tačke plakanja, ili možda čak i smijanja ili nešto između. Da li sve shvataju kao šalu, ili su oni sami jedna velika šala? Kvakoća romana je u ironičnoj atmosferi karipskog mikrokosmosa koja, kako priča odmiče poprima mjehur dvosmislenosti. Svaki čitalac stvaraće svoj ugao gledanja te dvosmislenosti, a ona će mu tek u Markezovim naznakama kroz seoske anegdote možda biti predočena. Autor sa izuzetnom lakoćom pripovijedanja drži napetost čitaocu do samog kraja, a sam kraj vrlo suptilno izvodi. Šta je čast? Kuda vodi kompenzacija? Uspostavljanje ravnoteže međuljudskih odnosa? I mnoga druga pitanja (naročito oko postupaka likova) će se postavljati kroz ovu pripovijetku, a odgovori će biti prepušteni vama.

Pork Brothers Knock Off Santiago!

Yeah, you haven’t read too many review titles like that on GR and I doubt you will in future.

But this isn’t a mystery story. You know Santiago is going to cark it from line 1. On the other hand, very few murder stories have the great style and perfectly etched background of this one which takes place in a Colombian town in the first half of the 20th century. It’s not about “if”, “how” or “when”. It’s about the reasons “why”. Complex family relationships, power webs in a small town, the disinterested Church, the Arab immigrants, weddings and separations, machismo and virginity—all these fill the pages written in indelible prose by one of the 20th century’s greatest writers. Can you go wrong here?

And there remains a question, which Garcia-Marquez left for the reader’s imagination. Was Santiago actually guilty? Had he deflowered the bride of the fabulously rich and handsome man who appeared in town some time before? After the extravagant wedding, five hours later, the groom returned the bride, who, when questioned, uttered only Santiago’s name. “Did he actually?” is not answered. It was insinuated, whispered, and understood by everyone in town. Santiago was no doubt a ladies’ man capable of the deed. He was thereby doomed. The pork-butcher brothers of the shamed bride had to save the family honor. The whole story is revealed during an investigation thirty years after the events by a narrator whose mother had ties to Santiago’s family and that of the rejected bride. Can we really get to the bottom of all crimes, can we really decide who is guilty, who is innocent on the basis of a few, but not all the facts? And, another thing: why is the death foretold? I would say it’s because the author is saying, “Given this society, in a case where a bride is discovered to not be a virgin, violence and probably murder are predictable.”

With way over 7,000 reviews already on Goodreads, I think I will stop here. Don’t miss the book.

گزارش یک مرگ..چیزی چندان فراتر از داستان یک نزاع و درگیری در یک شهر کوچک نیست..یک قتل با انگیزه دفاع از شرف و جزییات ان..و یک روایت جالب از زوایای متعدد..,شخصیت پردازی متنوع و داستانی با سیر مناسب,
مارکز شاید یک داستان پرداز ماهر باشد..مثل یک نقاش ماهر که خطوطی بر بوم می افریند و نیازی به فکر کردن ندارد برای افرینش خط بعدی..
با اینحال اما انچه که در نهایت تابلویی از مارکز میشود مورد علاقه من نیست,سبک نوشتن مارکز برای من مثل موسیقی پاپ میماند,مانند یک فواره ازار دهنده از احساسات ساده,گزاره هایی که مثل زنجیری میبایست خواننده را همراه کنند..و اگر همراه نشوی جادوی قلم از بین میرود..در واقع مارکز برای من اینگونه است,شعبده بازی با چوبی شکسته..
شعبده بازی که می توان اجرایش را دید و حتی لبخندی زد..اما نمی توان او را دوست داشت..

This is one of Márquez’s novellas, at only 122 pages long. Santiago Nasar is going to be murdered and the whole town knows it—so why isn’t it stopped? There had never been a death more foretold, so it says. The town knows where it will happen, why and when. And yet, Santiago is still murdered. And thanks to the structure of this short novel, he is murdered multiple times— Márquez has structured the story without the confines of chronology, drawing in, drawing out, skirting around, coming in again; we know from the blurb who is to die and that they do die. Even by the end, when the inevitable happens (again), there is tension. The town is a living mass, all watching and waiting, making excuses, feigning confusion, as a murder foretold takes place.


“Manifestacion, (Demonstration)”—1934

As the novel is so short there isn’t a vast amount of things I can say, especially as the plot is almost entirely known before starting it. It is told by our narrator in a semi-journalistic way which adds to the realness of the novel, which, I read, is in fact based on real events. Supposedly something very similar happened to Márquez’s own godbrother. If you want a short, satisifying and intriguing read then I recommend it. This was my first Márquez novel that hasn’t been translated by Edith Grossman, but I hardly noticed. Márquez once said in a Paris Review interview that he was very fond of Rabassa (the translator for my edition) as he never used footnotes. Not my favourite novel of his but a very good one, and for how short it is, stunningly structured and written, as expected.
