The language doesn't flow, really slows you down. Many undescribed nouns used to describe other things - awkward.

I read Hyperion for my Philosophy lecture and it was a welcome change, considering that reading philosophers, especially Kant, are rather difficult to read and understand. Hölderlin was a poet and therefore it is rather magical to read his words.
I think everyone interested in poetry and philosophy can gain something from Hyperion for himself, since it's about a person learning life and finding it's own path. Errors included.

Los titanes es uno de los mejores poemas que he leído en toda mi vida. Leer a Hölderlin es siempre una experiencia extrasensorial, han pasado casi tres siglos, y ya podrían pasar tres más, nada se le compara.

Fazla hızlı okudum. Anlasilmama gibi bir sıkıntısı yok sadece çok duygusal ve romantik doğa hayranlığı ile askin hale gelmiş bir Hyperion karakteri var karsinizda. Hölderling hep adını duyduğum hiç okumadığım bir yazardi. Onunla tanisma kitabım bu. Şiirsel üslubu Shakespeare'ı hatırlatmiyor değil(: Shakespeare'den sonra herkes biraz Shakespeare galiba (: (Buradan da Harold Bloom Batı Kanonu ve Etkilenme Endisesine gönderme yapalım ) Hölderlin'in romantik akımının en önemli temsilcilerinden biri olarak görülmesini anlatıyı kurma biçemi size açıklıyor zaten. Günümüzün aforizma deliligine çok etkili katkılar sunan cümleleri var. Yine de sanırım herkese hitap edecek bir eser değil.

A masterpiece of german writing. Beautiful language and imagery, combined with grand ideas of naturalism, freedom and the meaning of life.

Although it makes sense due to the framing of the story, the structure can be a little off sometimes and take some punch out of the turning points of the story.

In the end Hyperion goes through his emotional rollercoaster and has no one but himself to blame. If I understood his character correctly, then that's what he actually wanted.
Do not look at him as an example of a healthy psyche though, this kind of mindset can lead to a very dark place, as seen by Diotima. Don't see every decision and turning point in your life as absolute and fate defining, keep an open mind and try to make the best out of situations, keep improving when you can and keep in mind that you are your own future's creator.

People were weirder back then.

This book reflects my enourmous love for Ancient Greece and at times I caught myself thinking the same grand exclamations that Hyperion voices out. One of the books I wish I had written. Not a love story, not a war story; a bit of both - a story of truth, told in the manner of German Romantism (which I love). I reccomend this book to anyone who has a thing for beautifully put words and a burning love for the Ancient times. I'm sure lots of people do.

“And when I stand alone under the heavens, as I often did, alone with my thoughts and the clouds, and with the sea roaring below me and the forest murmuring above, then it has often been as if there were a word trying to form on my lips, something purely dreamed of, something never heard before; it is then that I feel as if I must dissolve into tears and flow away into the infinite.”

The central theme of this novel is the relationship between the individual and the universal, and the examination of the profound connection to the universal which can be harmonized with the intimate experience of love for another. Hyperion often retreats to nature to seek solace and understanding, seeing it as a reflection of divine perfection. I am sure many of us can relate to this sentiment even to this day as we as a society find ourselves alienated from the natural world.

As readers we can relate to Hyperion's quest for a unified life which is continually thwarted by human frailty and historical forces. Holderlin's lyrical style, in the context of German Romanticism, marries the notion of individual with the universal, the terrestrial with the sublime. For him it is truly about recognizing our longing for freedom which can be achieved by our spiritual intimacy with the natural world through art.

-Protagonist has mood swings that can give a reader whiplash; he's up and down like a yo-yo, often in the space of one sentence. Admittedly sentences tend to run long, with that very German aversion to the full stop.

This will never be a favourite of mine, but I might still read it again in the future. Or maybe just dip in and out so I can bob around in the pretty and pompous prose.

E tuttavia si riescono ad intravedere, tra i momenti di riflessione filosofica soffocanti per la loro densità, anche attimi di scrittura viva, elegante, classica nel senso che la parola può avere per la letteratura del Sette- Ottocento. Le note di Amoretti sono d'aiuto per la comprensione dei concetti con cui il lettore moderno non è più familiare (luoghi della Grecia antica o nomi di personaggi mitici), ma avrei forse preferito qualche riflessione più profonda sulla filosofia del tempo (idealismo tedesco) che sta alla base dell'intero libro, qualche nota sulla concezione che Hölderlin aveva dell'arte e, soprattutto, della letteratura, elementi, quest'ultimi, senza i quali mi sembra impossibile capire gran parte delle riflessioni che compaiono nel (e che, difatti, strutturano il) libro.
