جميلة هي إيزابيل الليندي، وجميل هو كل ما تكتبه. تأسرني رواياتها وتأخذني إلى عالم النساء القويات المناضلات في وجه التسلط الذكوري أيّاً كان شكله.
في هذه الحكاية، كانت بطلتنا إيرين بيلتران الصحفية الشابة وصديقها فرانسيثكو ليال، اللذين يحاولان كشف لغز مقبرة جماعية، حيث قامت قوات الدرك بقتل الناس وإخفائهم في إحدى المناجم، كل ذلك خلال فترة الحكم العسكري في تشيلي.

تنسج إيزابيل الليندي قصصها بطريقة سلسلة ممتعة جذابة، وتروي لنا قصص عائلات مختلفة لكنها تتعرض لنفس المحن في ظل الدكتاتورية العسكرية؛ آل بيلتران الأغنياء، وآل ليال المهاجرين، وآل رانكيليو الفلاحين البسطاء.

قصة حب قد تكون عادية جداً جعلتنها الروائية العظيمة، قصة سحرية بديعة وصفعة على وجه كل دكتاتورية وقمع.

الرواية ممتعة للغاية في كل تفاصيلها

I have yet to read an Allende book that I don’t like. This one is short, but there’s a lot packed into those pages, and I had a wonderful time with it.

This is a book about life under a military dictatorship in an unnamed country that can only be Chile. Irene, a reporter, and Francisco, a psychologist-turned-photographer, are forced to confront the ugliest side of the regime when a teenage girl disappears immediately after an interview.

As is to be expected from an Allende book, the plot meanders a bit and gives life stories of minor characters; I love this, as it results in a richly textured and interesting cast. They are a diverse bunch, from a wealthy family struggling to maintain their traditional lifestyle, to middle-class immigrants, to impoverished farmers. Without exception, they’re vivid and well-developed, and I was easily drawn into their stories. There is of course a romance between the two protagonists, which I quite enjoyed (okay, I’m a little in love with Francisco myself).

Overall, this is a well-written, well-crafted book, with such a three-dimensional setting and characters that it’s only too easy to relate to their situations and wonder what you would do in similar circumstances. This book seems to get less attention than many of Allende’s other works, perhaps because it was published nearly 30 years ago, but it is still relevant today. I didn’t love it as much as, say, House of the Spirits, but it’s still an excellent novel and a worthy read.

Ms. Allende based her novel on an actual love story. Irene Beltran is a daughter of wealthy parents from the upper classes. The lover is Francisco Leal, the son of Spanish exiles, who is a photographer and works for the resistance.

The novel tells the story of rapid arrests for no apparent reason, and arbitrary mass executions of the populace in a unknown Latin American country.

Once again Ms. Allende proves that she is a genius at story telling who brings her characters to life.

You can never be sure what is going to happen with these South American authors, as they always navigate on the border of reality.
Maybe there is much Garcia Marquez in this story, but this lady succeeds in being sensible without being pathetic, as she finds the proper way with words almost anytime. And, more important, without trying to seduce the reader...

الحب والظلال ينسج قصة حب في وسط موقف سياسي مخيف حقيقي بشكل مقلق لأنه كان ولا يزال حقيقي في العديد من دول العالم وخاصة في أمريكا اللاتينية.
نعم ، إن حب إيرين وفرانسيسكو لبعضهما البعض أمر لا يصدق ، لكن جمال الرواية الشديد يتألق في العديد من الشخصيات ، ربما يختلفون في دوافعهم ولكن حقيقي جدًا في تعقيداتهم

I used to enjoy Allende in my early 20s so I assumed that I’d still enjoy her in my mid 30s. I was wrong. I didn’t enjoy this book. I didn’t hate it either but it was just a shallow political romance. As someone who has the experience of living under an oppressive government I’m familiar with many of the things she is talking about and yet it fails to impress me. The whole thing is just like an endless blabber and the only time it gets interesting she just rushes through the events. The side stories and flashbacks are not only boring they’re also forced into the story at the worst moments possible. They are supposed to give depth to the main characters and make them more tangible and appealing but they only slow down the pace. The political side of the story could be more poignant and powerful. There are writers who write such things much better than Allende, writers like Ariel Dorfman and Ismail Kadare. Naturally I prefer to read their works. Unfortunately the romance side of the story didn’t impress me either. In fact I preferred the political side.  There was no chemistry between Irene and Francisco. And the great love they felt for each other was just something Allende asked me to believe. Reading about their first lovemaking felt like reading a geographical text with all those exploring “her roads and tunnels and hills and valleys …” And I swear I’d go mad if I read one more time the ways they cherished each other. ...
Anyway, I didn’t like this book and I don’t recommend it. I’ll give Allende another chance later (much later) since I still have several of her books on my shelf.

فعلا لو كنت قرأتها من عشر سنوات. .لم أكن ساقدرها او افهمها حقا و"بالفعل شاهدت الفيلم من ٢٥ سنة و لم يترك أثرا"..فقبل ثورتنا..لم نفهم جيدا معنى

الرواية ببساطة تؤكد: انك مهما كنت  في حالك وماشي جنب الحيط فهذا لن يمنعه ابدا من أن ينهدم فوقك

فنري حال شعب تشيللي عام ١٩٧٩ بعد ست سنوات من انقلاب بينوشيه" كأنها جزء تالي لبيت الأرواح"من خلال واقعة حقيقية لمنجم تم اكتشاف أربعة عشر جثة لمفقودين ريفيين به..و دور صحفية و مصور"طبيب!!"في نشر هذا الكشف بين ظلال من الفقر و الرعب و الموت
