و أخيراً خضت التجربة مع الروائية الأشهر على الإطلاق " إيزابيل الليندي " ،
هذا النوع من الروايات شبيه بمشاهدة الأفلام ، رواية ناجحة بامتياز في جذب انتباه القاريء الذي لن يشعر أثناء قراءتها بالملل ..
فالكاتبة بارعة في إثارة الصور و الخيال ، و لها أسلوب مشوّق في سرد الأحداث ، حدثاً تلو الآخر ..
هذا بالاضافة الى جمال اللغة .. كيف لا ؟! و هي تكتب بالإسبانية ..
صحيح بأنها و على الرغم من استمتاعي بها .. ليست من النوع الذي أفضله .. نظرا ً لسرعة إيقاعها .. و عدم تعمّقها في الشخصيات .. و لكن لا بأس .. فالبعض يُفضّل أن يرى المشهد و يقرأه من الخارج دون تدخل المؤلف .. و البعض يرى بأن الرواية ليست عيادة " تحليل نفسي " و هو محق في ذلك .. و لكن يظل لذلك المذهب سحر من نوع خاص .. كروايات الادب الروسي التي تسبر أغوار النفس البشرية و تذيع كوامنها ..

المهم .. هو أن الرواية ممتعة و جميلة ..
تجعل من ذاكرتك آهلة بالكثير من الطيوف و الشخصيات ، لتعقد معهم صلات دافئة و حميمة ، كما لو كنت تعيش معهم .. تعرفك بالثقافة اللاتينية عن قرب ، المهاجرين الإسبان ، حياة الناس في تلك البقاع المنسية .. و تشعرك بمعاناتهم تحت ظلم الاستبداد السياسي في فترة الانقلاب العسكري في ذلك الزمن ..
و هي رواية حبّ ، انتماء .. رواية وطنّ ..
رواية إنسانية !

As the title suggests, this is a book about love. Not just romantic love, but love in all its shapes and forms, love between family members, parents and children, friends and strangers. Even people who are strangers to each other, during the course of this novel prove their capability for love by acts of great personal courage. That kind of personal initiative is always very touching to read about and this novel handled that nicely. Human beings coming together to help one another, often at great peril for themselves and their families. One of those human beings is Irene, a young woman engaged to a handsome military officer. She grows up in an upper class family, protected from poverty but not from personal tragedies. Having to witness her parent’s violent arguments in childhood made her somewhat withdrawn and dreamy. Despite being very perceptive at times (especially when on duty as a journalist), Irene seems to prefer to live in a world of her own.

As the novel unfolds, Irene learns more about the place she lives in, as she makes the discovery of widespread suffering of the majority of people in her land, revealing traces of violence and injustice. Many families have valid reasons for crying rivers of tears and our Isabel together with her photographer (soon to be love interest) Francesco follow these rivers that seem to lead to a lake of grief. I love the way Allende potrays her characters. For example, Irene's character development is very believable. It is not that she starts of as a superficial girl, but the sensitivity that has lead her toward wanting to know more, is often not enough and she is forced to develop a new level of personal courage and determination. Furthermore, she is not portrayed as all mighty, she often has to and does rely on help of others, for example Francesco, who is by personal experience, more used to the desperate but subtle game of fighting the regime you happen to live in. The members of Francesco’s family are also a very important part of this novel that often travels back in time to give us more insight into the soul of its residents. Trust to Allende to create amazing family portraits.

Nevertheless, all of this mentioning of love doesn't mean that this novel is only about emotions. On the contrary, I would say it is a very realistic representation of what life in a controlled state is like. I would even go so far as to compare it with 1984 when it comes to the depths of the psychological study of the oppressed and the oppressor. The seriousness of its appeal against government control is reinforced by those aspects of the novel that are most brutal but (probably) most honest in portraying the effects of physical and pyschological violence. If we are going to be honest with ourselves, we will have to admit that what happens in this novel is not a thing of a past, but sadly it is still a very relevant story for our time. As hard as it was to read at times ( because of the painful descriptions of tragic human destinies and hopeless struggles against a military regime), this novel still felt like a ray of light.

There are graphic scenes in this novel. They weren't overwhelming to read and (IMPO) this novel still managed to send a message of love and hope but if you can’t take reading about murders, torture, rape and dead bodies, this may not the novel for you. In addition, there is a parallel love story in this novel that resembles the one in Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. Allende is much more explicit in these descriptions of erotical desires at young age than Bronte was, so that is another element that might bother some people, even if brother and sister in question aren't real siblings and are aware of that when they daydream about each other. Personally, I don't have anything negative to say about the novel, I would just have liked to know a bit more about some characters that disappeared too suddenly for my liking. Another 5o or 100 pages would have made me perfectly happy. Not that the novel left any loose ends, it just left me with wanting more.

The House of Sprits and Daughter of Fortune were just perfect lenght for me. If you have read and loved this novel, I would recommend reading those two novels. On the other hand, if you haven’t read anything by Allende this is a good novel to start with. It is also not as long as her other novels, so if you have a preference for a lesser number of pages, or you can’t spare the time for a longer novel, consider giving this one a try. My edition numbers 290 pages. It also came with a beautifully illustrated cover that captures the spirit of the novel wonderfully, but I wasn't able to track it here on goodreads.

To conclude, this novel describes love in time of shadows (that come in a sinister form of a military regime) and it does it brilliantly, showing the best and the worst in human nature. The writing is touchingly beautiful, it deserves to be considered among the best in magic realism.

I will make this review very short and sweet. If you are a fan of Ms. Allende, and love characters as I do, I have little doubt you will be disappointed with her "Of love And Shadows."

There might not be as many great characters as in previous novels that I have read by this extremely talented writer, but there are enough to satisfy a 'character driven fanatic like myself.'

The name of the country in the story is never mentioned, other than it is a South American country that is run by a military dictatorship that has run amok with power, after overthrowing a democratically elected socialist government. The atrocities remind me of the atrocities discovered in
in El Salvador during the 1980's.

The two main characters, Irene Beltran, a disheveled but beautiful journalist working for a magazine, and Francisco Leal, a psychologist turned photographer, form an investigative partnership that uncover the dark, horrific acts of the police and government, and in turn, become a target of those police and government.

Their partnership slowly turns into a romance, and the story turns into a suspenseful thriller that leaves one guessing to the end.

Unlike all her other novels I have read, the Catholic Church nor the U.S. government are involved in any of the nefarious activities that take place.

Esta ambientada en chile, después del golpe militar dirigido por Pinochet. La historia está llena de personajes interesantes pero, se pueden destacar tres principales, Irene es periodista una joven dulce e inocente al principio de la historia, pero la vida y los sucesos la hacen más fuerte e independiente; Francisco es fotógrafo, muy comprometido con la realidad social, trabaja con Irene y se enamora de ella; Gustavo es el prometido de Irene aunque ella lo ve y trata como amigo, y es militar. La novela envuelve una historia de amor pero está llena de drama, desgracias, abusos, injusticias y sufrimiento que pasaron muchas familias chilenas durante esta dictadura.

I had hoped to find "House of Spirits" among the library stacks, but no, just an empty slot with this book, 'Of Love and Shadow' right beside it so I thought I would give it a try. I very much enjoyed the opening half of this book as there were some truly fascinating characters. It was pleasant reading: what would bring all these characters together? Where is the author headed? Then the book veered into very dark political issues and there is a particularly gruesome rape/murder scene that seemed pointless in moving the story forward in any way. Therefore this was almost like reading two different books. For me, the author just didn't pull it all together. It's almost like a chapter or two is missing at the end. But, I'm definitely going to read "House of Spirits" as all prolific authors can have a bad day or two at writing.

The cover of this particular edition is splendid in its awfulness. Overall I just didn't care for this book. Allende does too much narrating about what people are like and what they're feeling instead of just letting them develop. I liked the political stuff, didn't really care for the love story. I found it pretty average.

As a side note, what does she have against the elderly?! There's quite a few borderline ageist quotes in this book. Here have one: "During the months since he had met Irene, Francisco had learned a great deal about the peculiarities of the aged, and had discovered that affection is the only key to communicating with them, because reason is a labyrinth in which they too easily lose their way" (265). Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but all the old people in this book are helpless and pathetic and it seemed unnecessary.

As always with Allende novels it’s a love which takes place in Pinochet regime ( maybe the publisher just say ok Isabela write the same book again? )
But this one feels more true, I guess because it was only her second novel. And what makes it more interesting is that this book is published approximately 5 years before the end of the Dictatorship in Chile so you don’t end up in the present Chile but rather with a hope of a better future.

Allende writing style is simple and nice but her main issue in my opinion is that she only has one story to tell and she has told this story too many times already.

La pluma de Allende tiene un efecto atrapante desde las primeras letras de cada una de sus novelas. Por supuesto De Amor y De sombra no es la excepción, aunque no sea mi favorita, es una historia que vale la pena de leer, es un testimonio fiel de aquellas situaciones difíciles que se viven en muchas partes de Sur América a nivel político y social, pero que Isabell logra desarrollar de una forma exquisita incluyendo elementos como el amor, la amistad y el valor de la familia.

Irene y Francisco, los grandes protagonistas, desarrollan su amor en medio de diferencias sociales, donde ella, periodista, pertenece a una clase alta, blindada de los desastres políticos y sociales que la rodeaban, por su parte, Francisco, chico de clase media, psicólogo, con una visión política contraria a la que regía en el país, llega a la vida de Irene al ser contratado como su fotógrafo personal. Ellos empiezan a recorrer la ciudad y pueblos aledaños en búsqueda de noticias interesantes para ser publicadas, entre tantas historias, encontrarán una en especial que abrirá las puertas a una serie de descubrimientos y, que pondrá en jaque a la dictadura que rige el país. Interesante, ¿no?

En es un libro en teoría corto, sin embargo, hay capítulos que se leen más rápido y otros en los que la lectura se vuelve un poco densa y lenta, obligándote a repetir ciertas líneas del texto para no sentirte desorientado. Percibí una novela bastante realista, en donde los personajes principales con la fuerza de su amor se vuelven imparables, depositando en los lectores una luz de esperanza.
Por último, Destaco el recurso de los “flashbacks” que Allende utilizó en muchas partes de la lectura, en ellos, la autora nos proporciona datos y detalles de la vida de cada uno de los personajes y sus familias, con el fin de entender sus modos de actuar en el presente. ¡TOP!

Of Love and Shadows is the second novel by Latin American writer Isabel Allende and written after her international best-selling debut novel The House of Spirits, admittedly a tough act to follow. But this book takes us once again on the tumultuous world stage in an undisclosed Latin American country under the control of a military dictatorship where one of the central themes is the plight of the desaparecidos. Irene Beltran, born of the upper class and working as a journalist, and her photographer, Francisco Leal, the youngest son of exiles from Spain as well as covert worker in the resistance. This young couple fall desperately in love as they investigate a missing person story stumbling upon a far deeper crime reaching high into the government with dire consequences.

Another overarching theme is that of immigration and the plight of those who have been uprooted and must make their way in a foreign country. It is brought out so eloquently in the words of the beloved Chilean poet and diplomat winning the Nobel Prize for literature in 1971.

This was another beautiful book by Isabel Allende, one of my favorite Latin American authors. And this did not disappoint with its wide array of characters and a riveting historical perspective that kept me turning the pages.

تنسج إيزابيل قصة حب خلف تلك الظلال القاتمة، لتمدنا بالأمل، وتؤكد على المشاعر الإنسانية الراقية التي لا يزلزلها ظلم، ولا تمحو وجودها تعقيدات الواقع
فلا تنسى إيزابيل وهي تتحدث عن الحرية والعدالة، أن تذكرنا بإنسانيتنا، وما جبلنا عليه من خير وحب مقابل الشر الذي قد يصل ببعض البشر إلى التفوق على الشيطان بنفسه


الحكاية الرئيسة في الرواية تدور حول الصحفية أيرين التي تعمل في مجلة نسائية، وتلتقي بفرانثيسكو الطبيب النفسي الذي ترك مجال تخصصه بحثا عن مصدر دخل أوفر، أيرين وفرانثيسكو يعملان معا في عدة تحقيقات صحفية، ليجدا نفسيهما في مواجهة قصة غريبة لفتاة لها قدرات سحريّة، ويتورطان في البحث عنها بعدما فقد أثرها بعد اعتقالها للتحقيق معها في مركز للشرطة...ليكشفا عن الكثير من الفساد العسكري من خلال تلك الحادثة

ولكن كعادة إيزابيل تدخلنا عوالم مختلفة قبل أن يتقاطع شخوصها في بؤرة حدث يجمعهم...وهنا أدخلتنا عوالم ثلاث أسر...وفي كل مرة تبدأ الحديث عنهم بالمرأة التي تلبسها رداء من القوة والاستقلالية...بياتريس، دينغا رانكيليو، وهيلدا...وفي النهاية بطلة روايتها أيرين


وكما قلت سابقا في أغلب مراجعاتي لروايات إيزابيل...أنها تحب المرأة القوية الباحثة عن مكان لها ودور في المجتمع، وكأنها تبعث فيها شيئا من شخصيتها، وتظهر في كل رواية وشخصية جزءا من حقيقتها...على الرغم من تنوع شخصياتها النسائية في كل رواية من رواياتها


هي قصة من الممكن أن تحدث في أي مكان من العالم، ولا نستثني منها عالمنا العربي، الذي يغص بمثل تلك الحكايات...والتي رغم ألمها تمدنا بالحياة

تقول إيزابيل:

“لا أعتقد أننا نحيا على ظهر هذا الكوكب لكي نكون سعداء. إن المرء لا يتعلم شيئا وهو سعيد. الألم وحده يمدنا بالوجود الحقيقي، الذي يساعدنا على النمو وتفهم الأشخاص وكيف تجري الأمور في هذا العالم. لو كان المرء سعيدا طيلة حياته فلن يعيش سوى في عالم واحد ولن يحقق أي تقدم."

رواية مؤثرة مليئة بالأحداث والتشويق، تكاد تقترب في بعض أجزائها من الروايات البوليسية...مغلفة بالكثير من الألم والظلم والقسوة والديكتاتورية، وكذلك بالحب والبحث عن الحريّة...والترجمة للرائع المبدع صالح علماني الغني عن التعريف

ذهبت نجمة للغموض الذي اكتنف بعض الأحداث مثل حياة فرانثيسكو السريّة والتي لم يظهر الجانب الواضح منها إلا في نهاية الرواية، وللنهايات المفتوحة لبعض الحكايات في الرواية...وكانت ستختفي نجمة لعدم توافق أفكاري مع أفكارها، ولكنني توقفت في اللحظات الأخيرة، فلن أحاكم أفكارها التي نبعت من أيدولوجية مختلفة، وأنا أعيها تماما.

أول عمل روائي أقرأه للرائعة إيزابيل الليندي، كنت قد قرأت لها قصتين على ما أذكر في إحدى المجموعات القصصية لعدد من كتاب أمريكا اللاتينية؛ وقد أبانت حينها عن حكاءة شائقة وكاتبة من طينة الكبار..الحب والظلال هي روايتها الثانية وتحكي عن الحياة تحت وطأة الدكتاتورية العسكرية (بينوشيه) وكيف يتحول الضابط الملتزم تدريجيا إلى مجرم (عندما لم يعد عليه تقديم كشف حساب أمام أحد)، وأن الوعود التي سوغت اﻹنقلاب على الحاكم الشرعي يتم تحويرها إذا فشل تحقيقها وإذا استحال القضاء على البؤس فإنه يحظر الحديث عنه!..ما أتعجب له هو عدم حصول روائية وكاتبة كبيرة حقا تضاهي ماركيز ويوسا على جائزة نوبل! بينما حصل عليها من هم أقل منها بكثير، موهبة وموضوعا..وقد يقول البعض حكمت عليها بعمل واحد فقط انتظر حتى تقرأ باقي أعمالها، فأقول إن عملا واحدا متقنا قد يشي بقدرات كاتبه ويجعلك متأكدا من أن المتوقع منه هو الذي ﻻبد أن يأتي به وﻻ خيار لديه غير ذلك!..وكثيرا ما ﻻحظت ذلك من قراءة أول عمل لكتاب كماركيز(عاصفة اﻷوراق) ثم يوسا(امتداح الخالة) وقبلهم أمادو في (عودة البحار) أقنعتني أعمالهم اﻷولى قراءة بأن أغلب ما سأقرأه مستقبلا لهم سيكون رائعا وعظيما

تأخذنا الليندي هنا كي نكتشف أشياء لم نختبرها من قبل أو ربما أختبرها بعضنا، أشياء تنبثق من واقع مظلم يحول الثابت ويزيح الراسخ ويهزه كذبابة في قبضة! هنا عندما يصبح (الرعب أقوى من الحب والحقد)..بيد أنه بعض الثوابت ﻻبد وأن تبقى مستقرة ومؤتملة مهما عتت رياح الظلم وتفشت سموم الطغاة، زوال الظلم ونهاية الظالمين مهما طال زمان سطوتهم
