4.5 stars. A clever, unique, well written novel about identity and individuality. Tertuliano Maximo Afonso is in his late 30s, is divorced, a depressed history teacher who has had a girlfriend for the last six months. Whilst watching a video, he sees a man who looks exactly like him. He decides to find out more about his double. There are a number of plot twists, a number of thought provoking lines and a hint of humour.

Forse, è Pasqua, vi grazierò anche del solo vedere sulla home – se vi compaio come amico o vicino – la mia solita lenzuolata, spesso buttata giù concitatamente sull’onda della “passione”.
Forse.

Forse vi parlerò soltanto della scrittura di Saramago e del suo aver liberato se stesso e il narratore dalle catene del canone del dialogo, "... che da sempre ci deve illudere della discesa tra noi" – lettori e per definizione malati di voyeurismo - dei personaggi, non più immaginari e oggetto di narrazione ma persone in carne, più o meno tremula, e ossa, più o meno osteoporotiche, di cui possiamo origliare i discorsi.

Forse accennerò alla sua vena comica scoperta a ottant'anni e che solo con questo scrivere può dispiegarsi senza temere il ridicolo.

Forse accennerò che L’uomo duplicato s’inserisce in una tradizione che ci viene dall'Anfitrione plautino e passa da invenzioni - chiave come il Sosia di Dostoevskij, il Visconte dimezzato, Dorian Gray, Dottor Jekyll fino dall'Operazione Shylock di Philip Roth.
Tradizione che si abbarbicava alla fantasia e al terrore di scoprire il proprio doppio psichico che solo la penna dell’autore poteva trasformare in un clone e che ora questo clone è a portata di mano o meglio di tasca, perché qualche riccazzo si è già fatto clonare.

Forse accennerò che si ha ben donde temere gli strizza cervelli che si fanno pagare per portare alla luce, come le mammane di una volta, il vostro doppio che avete ben nascosto e a cui sfuggite come il diavolo l’acqua santa per non finire come questo povero Tertulliano Màximo Afonzo, un nome ridicolo e due nomi per cognomi: una gran confusione già all’anagrafe, una predestinazione. Uno e trino.

Forse vi parlerò del senso comune o del buon senso, coprotagonista col suddetto Tertulliano, professore di Storia e il suo sosia Antonio Claro, un figurante in carriera.
Forse vi dirò soltanto che il grande Josè non lo ama granchè questo sesto senso, solito aggrapparsi alle scelte più banali e meno coinvolgenti ma che a volte è meglio ascoltarlo.

Sicuramente non vi parlerò della trama e dell’intreccio che li potete trovare, esposti per sommi capi, nella pandette della sovra copertina, anche perché sarebbe uno spoiler di un inquietante giallo d’autore. Ovviamente se la nostra vita, di cui disconosciamo il futuro, fosse un film di cui non conosciamo la trama e stessimo bellamente spaparanzati a vedercelo scorrere sotto gli occhi.
Sicuramente ve ne consiglierò vivamente la lettura raccomandandovi di tenervi stretta la vostra “banale” unicità.
Sicuramente la lenzuolata è servita.

Me ha encantado. Historia intrigante e inquietante más que por el hecho en sí de encontrar a alguien idéntico a ti, por las reflexiones desprendidas por Saramago a partir de eso. Destaco las apariciones del sentido común, son geniales.

Comentar que la adaptación cinematográfica de esta novela, Enemy, aunque muy libre, mantiene ese tono inquietante con mucho acierto y es una de esas pocas, poquísimas, veces en que me cuesta decir si me ha gustado más el libro o la peli. Recomiendo ambas altamente.

El final es bueno pero el viaje es un pelín aburrido.

أظن أن الفكرة ليست جديدة في حد ذاتها ولكن ما كتبه ساراماجو هنا هو إعطاء العمق والتركيز الشديد والحساسية المكثفة لتلك الفكرة..
فكرة أن الآخر هو أنت ، أو أنك أنت هو الآخر أو العكس تماماً، أن شخصاً آخر على وجه الأرض يشبهك تماماً، بل مطابق لك في صورتك وصوتك ، يعيش كل منكما في عالم مختلف وحياة مختلفة ، لكن الصورة هي ذاتها والتشابه عجيب إلى أن لا شيء يميز أحدهما عن الآخر..


فكرة مخيفة ومفزعة، ليس من ناحية يترتب عليها فقط، بل حتى في كونها حالة من عدم التقبل والخوف والجنون الذي يمكن ان يصيب الشخص في حال حصل ذلك فعلاً، بالنسبة لي سأعتبره من اسوء كوابيسي إثارة للسخرية والقلق أيضاً ، فأنا أحب اكون وحدي في هذا العالم، ليست أنانية أو شيئاً من هذا القبيل ، بل هو خوف وجودي فحسب ، أن تكون مجرد نسخة مزيفة ربما ، لشخص آخر ، لن أشعر بالألفة حيال ذلك، سأشعر بغربة شديدة، بإنفصال عن العالم لم يسبق لي أن شعرت به..


أسلوب ساراماجو في الرواية هو أسلوب الصدمة ، طرح الأسئلة ، التوغل في عنصر الخوف، القلق، الترقب، الإنتظار، الدهشة، التصادم، كل ما يكتبه ساراماجو هنا يجعلك ترتبك، تنتظر اللحظة التالية لتنزع القناع عن فزع جديد وتشويق أكثر حدة، ساراماجو لا يكتب هنا، بل يجسد الصراع بين النفس والشخص الأول والآخر، يكتب بكثرة ، يتطاول على السرد ، يغامر بإضافة كل ما يعتري النفس البشرية في حال حصول ذلك الأمر، أسلوبه هنا ليس في سرد الأحداث بل في حدوثها تزامناً مع أشياء أخرى، لو جمعت كل السيناريوهات هنا في عقل الشخص وحوار النفس، لا ادري بكم من الروايات ستخرج..


فكرة الصراع بحد ذاتها كانت جميلة في الرواية بكل ما يحمله من تناقض وفساد للنفس البشرية وجشع ومحاولة لإستغلال الصورة والجسد لتحقيق مآرب دنيئة عن طريق الآخر ، فكرة العداء بين شبيهين ، قصة التنافر والرغبة في التخلص من الآخر، ياله من قلم مريض ومجنون يحمله ساراماجو، ولكنه لاذع، حقاً لن بإمكاني سوى أن أستمتع بكل لحظة في الرواية..


السؤال الأخير الذي طرحه ساراماجو، من النسخة من الآخر، ومن هو الحقيقي ومن هو المزيف؟ وهل هناك إحتمال لوجود آخر غيرهما ؟


هذه الرواية ليست للنسيان ،فكرتها غير قابلة لذلك، لأنك دائماً ستفكر أن لك آخر مثلك، شبيهاً بك، وعدوك في نفس الوقت ..

بعد قراءات متعددة لساراماجو يبدو ليّ أن أكثر ما يرغب به في رواياته، أن يضعك حين تقرأ له أمام أسوء كوابيسك لكن ميزة الكابوس تكمن في أنك تعلم أنه كذلك بمجرد استيقاظك ثم تتعجب من نفسك كيف كنت تشعر بهذا الخوف وأنت تحلم رغم أنه كابوس خيالي ولا مجال لحدوثه في واقعك الهادئ والرتيب.

تبدو الحياة الحقيقية دومًا أشدّ بخلاً بالصدف من الرواية والأشكال الأخرى من التخييل، إلا مع قبول أن مبدأ الصدفة هو المحرك الوحيد والحقيقي للعالم وفي هذه الحالة فإن ما يُعاش وما يُكتب يجب أن يكون له الثقل نفسه وبالعكس.

ويستغل ساراماجو الفضاء الرحب الذي تتمتع به الرواية لخلق صدف لا يجود بها الواقع كثيرًا، فيحوّل الكابوس من مجرد حلم عابر ينتهي وتعلم تمامًا استحالة تحققه إلى واقعة تحدث بالفعل، دون أن يستشير عقلك في إمكانية حدوث شيء جنوني كهذا في الواقع. هو يعلن فقط أنه يحدث؛ انتهي.
ولك مطلق الحرية في أن تستكمل القراءة أو لا، من منّا يستطيع إذن كبح جماح الفضول والرغبة في معرفة كيف سيكون شكل الخيال حين يُطبق على أرض الواقع؟ كيف ستكون تفاصيله، نتائجه، مبرراته؟ هذه الأخيرة والمقصود بها المبررات لا يرهق ساراماجو نفسه للإجابة عنها ولا لتقديم أسباب لما يحدث، فقط الجنون والاستمتاع بتفاصيله.
هذا ما يحدث في كل رواية لساراماجو، الاختلاف فقط في نوع الكابوس (موضوع الرواية) وتفاصيله.

واضح أن ما يجب أن يكون سيكون ويملك الكثير من القوة، ليس من المجدي أن يتشاطر المرء مع القدر فهو خاسر دومًا.

الكابوس الذي يطرحه في هذه الرواية، ماذا لو وجدت نسخة أخرى منك؟
ليس لك شقيق توأم، ليس تشابه في شيء أو اثنين أو حتى عشرة، ليس تشابه بل تطابق فحين تنظر إلى هذه النسخة ستشعر وكأنك تنظر في المرآة؟
نسخة؟ هل هو نسختك حقًا أم أنك أنت نسخته؟ من سبّق الآخر؟
جميعنا يعلم المثل الشهير (يخلق من الشبه أربعين) لكن ماذا إذا أتيحت لك الفرصة للتقابل وجهًا لوجه مع هذا الشبيه أو حتى معرفة وجوده حقيقةَ على درجة من القرب؟

لا أحد ينكر أن التفرد والتميز هو أحد أهم الأشياء التي نسعى إليها ونرغب في تحقيقها، رغم أن كل منّا يختلف في محاولاته للوصول إلى هذا المسعى فالبعض يحاول التميز بطريقة مبالغ بها أحيانًا حتى أنها تثير الشفقة، البعض الآخر تكون طريقته في التميز هو الاختلاف مع ما هو سائد أيًا كان دون تفكير حتى ينتهي إلى أن يصبح شخصية لا تعرف ما تريده بالفعل وما تفضله وما لا تفضله وما أسبابها في ذلك طالما أن المجتمع الخارجي يستمر في فرض آراء معينة يلزم هو نفسه مسبقًا بمعارضتها بلا وعيّ.
البعض الأفضل يكتفي بكونه هو، وفي رأيي هؤلاء هم الأكثر تميزًا لأنهم استطاعوا فعل ما لم يقدر الآخرين على فعله؛ أن يكونوا أنفسهم.
لذا يصبح الآخر الذي يشبهني، الآخر الذي هو مثليّ مصدر إزعاج دائم، وكأن وجوده يأخذ من مساحة وجودي ومن قدرتي على أن أكون فريد ومتفرد.
هذه المشاعر والأفكار وغيرها الكثير هي ما يتناولها ساراماجو في الرواية بتفصيل شديد، ساراماجو يكتب الأشياء التي لم تكن تتخيل يومًا أنها قابلة للكتابة بالطريقة هذه.

Depois de ter visto o filme baseado neste livro (Enemy, realizado por Denis Villeneuve e protagonizado por Jake Gyllenhaal), tinha mesmo de o ler, até porque a história não me parecia nada "saramaguiana".

A verdade é que o filme é bastante fiel ao livro (com algumas adaptações à actualidade, como o uso da internet), embora inclua alguns elementos não presentes neste (a questão das aranhas, relacionada com o papel das mulheres). O final do filme é deixado mais em aberto do que o do livro e deu azo a interpretações mais psicológicas e filosóficas, como o facto de os dois homens serem afinal a mesma pessoa, o que no livro não é uma possibilidade.

Quanto ao livro propriamente dito (que isto é o GoodReads e não o GoodMovies, embora não fosse má ideia esse existir também), achei muito bom. Há já bastante tempo que não lia um romance de Saramago e continuo a gostar muito da escrita, das digressões intercaladas na narrativa, do humor e da ironia.

Gostei sobretudo dos diálogos entre os vários personagens, mas especialmente entre o protagonista e o senso comum, que aparece em diversas ocasiões para conversar com Tertuliano Máximo Afonso e propiciando tanto reflexões profundas como algum "comic relief".

Acho que o autor podia ter explorado um pouco mais a questão da identidade, ou melhor, daquilo que nos identifica para além do aspecto físico - o contexto era perfeito para isso e não foi desenvolvido como eu esperaria.

Já está agendada a leitura d' O Duplo, de Dostoievski. E entretanto descobri que há uma obra de Philip K. Dick que também toca este tema (O Homem Duplo, A Scanner Darkly no original).

Recomendado, especialmente a fãs de Saramago.

Having watched the movie based on this book (Enemy, directed by Denis Villeneuve and starred by Jake Gyllenhaal) I really had to read it, even more so because the story didn't seem Saramagoesque at all to me.

The movie is in fact quite true to the book (with some adaptations to the present day, like the use of internet), although it includes some elements which do not appear in the latter (namely the spiders, referring to the role of women). The ending of the movie is more open than the book's and this gave way to some psychological and philosophical interpretations, like the two men being the same person after all, which is not a possibility in the book.

As for the book itself (for this is GoodReads and not GoodMovies, although that would be nice too), I think it's very good. I had not read a novel by Saramago for quite some time and I still enjoy it very much - the writing, the digressions interspersed in the narrative, the humor and the irony.

I especially liked the dialogues between the different characters, but mostly between the protagonist and the common sense, which shows up on several occasions to talk with Tertuliano Máximo Afonso, providing profound considerations as well as some comic relief.

I think that the author could have explored the identity question (or what identifies us beyond the physical traits) a bit more - it was the perfect context and it wasn't developed as I would expect it to be.

I'm already planning on reading The Double by Dostoyevsky and I found out there's a book by Philip K. Dick that also addresses this subject (A Scanner Darkly).

I recommend this one, especially for Saramago fans out there.

I figured out the inevitable ending of this book about halfway through it, but getting to the end was certainly not tedious . The language (lyrically translated by Margaret Costa) is full of unusual but vivid imagery ("...she had noticed a kind of embarassed catch in his voice, a disharmony that occasionally distorted his delivery, like the characteristic vibrato produced by a cracked water jar when struck with the knuckles"), and the novel is filled with sophisticated phrases that fit oddly well with the scrupulously average protagonist without feeling false or forced. Even the author's tendency to combine what ought to be three pages of dialogue into one run-on sentence (strung along by obsessively linked commas) feels natural and comprehensible after the first few instances.
Though the plot may feel slightly hackneyed at first glance('The Prince and the Pauper' goes awry)the brilliance of the execution saves it from any such accusation overall. This is a wonderful and diverting choice for anyone willing to engage in the slight relinquishment of common sense that this novel (and the genre) requires.
