کتاب درباره فوتبال است. به خصوص فوتبال امریکای جنوبی. نویسنده اهل اروگوئه است و به قول خودش مثل همه بچه های امریکای جنوبی می خواسته بازیکن فوتبال بشود که البته بازیکن خوبی نبوده است. به جایش نویسنده شده و با همان قلم درباره فوتبال نوشته است.
برای منی که علاقه و اطلاع خاصی درباره فوتبال ندارم کتاب بدی نبود و اطلاعاتم را افزایش داد، به خصوص درباره تاریخ فوتبال.
کتاب روند تاریخی در بیان روایت هایش دارد اما تاریخ نیست. شاید فرازهایی از فوتبال است که به ترتیب زمان بیان شده اند.
قلم گالئانو جالب است. گاهی توصیف هایی به کار می برد که انتظار نداری چنین توصیف هایی را برای یک شوت، یا یک دریبل بشنوی؛ و گاهی طنز کنایه آمیزی دارد.
یکی از نکات جذاب کتاب پرداختن به فوتبال در حکومت های دیکتاتوری است. فوتبال زمان هیتلر، فوتبال در اسپانیای فرانکو، فوتبال در آرژانتین تحت حکومت دیکتاتوری، فوتبال در زمان جنگ.

لا يتوقف المبدع غليانو عن ادهاشي كلما قرأت له أكثر. لم أكن أتخيل ولا حتى في أكثر أحلامي جموحاً أن كتاباً بهذه الروعة قد يخط يوماً. لقد أعاد إلي أدواردو الكثير من ذكريات طفولتي عندما كانت كرة القدم (لعباً وليش مشاهدةً) عشقي الأول والأخير، وطبعاً كان حلمي كما كان حلم كل من هم في سني الاحتراف ولعب كرة القدم في إحدى الفرق "الأوروبية" طبعاً مثل ريال مدريد. ولكن "بيروقراطية" الواقع والظروف (إن صح التعبير) صفعتني وأمليت علي ماذا يجب أن أكون أو على الأقل ماذا يجب ألا أكون، وأصبحت العب أقل وأشاهد مباريات أكثر. لقد بدأت التشجيع أيام ريال مدريد رونالدو وزيدان وبيكهام وفيغو وكارلوس، وكنت وقتها أتابع ملخصات المباريات عبر النشرات الإخبارية ولكن الأمر تطور إلى مشاهدة مباريات كاملة. بدأت تتراود أسئلة كثيرة إلى ذهني عن كرة القدم؛ لماذا تنال أوروبا حصة الأسد من عدد الفرق المشاركة بكأس العالم؟ ولما تؤكد كرة القدم على غرار بقية الرياضات على نبذ العنصرية؟ لم أجد من يجيبني لسوء الحظ، وها هو غاليانو يقدم لي الإجابة على ورق من ذهب بأسلوب رائع مرهف ومحزن بالتأكيد فاضحاً سياسات الفيفا وعنصريات أوروبا وعنصريات المشجعين وسياسات قتل الإبداع وكنز الأموال وتزوير الحقائق، كل ذلك كان ممزوجاً بنكهة أمريكية جنوبية لا تخلو من ذكر بعض الإشكاليات السياسية هنا وهناك! كل ذلك كان انطلاقاً من مبدأ يبدو لو وجيها وهو أن كرة القدم تعكس الواقع المحلي والعالمي.

كل ما تحتاج معرفته عن كرة القدم ستجده في هذا الكتاب الجميل سهل القراءة!

هناك لياقة وطاقة لا تنتهي....وهناك إصابات تنهي مسيرات مشرقة.
لاعبون يحققون إنجازات ملهمة...وآخرون يحصدون غضب الصحافة وعنف الجمهور.
مشجع يطرد الملل ويغرد بالأهازيج إلى جانب مشجع يرتفع ضغطه ويضيق تنفسه، يطلق اللعنات ويحطم الأكواب.
هذه هي كرة القدم: متعة وحرقة، رقي وانحدار، شمس وظل.

شغف أبدي
يقول غاليانو أنه كان لاعب كرة محترف وعال المهارة، فقط عندما ينام ويحلم. أما على الأرض الملعب فهو أخرق تماماً. لذا – حد تعبيره- فهذا الكتاب عبارة عن تكفير عن الذنب. نلمس من النص شغف غاليانو بالساحرة المستديرة، إعجابه باللاعبين، بالقصص الملهمة، بالبطولات العظيمة وبالصدف العجيبة. هذا النوع من الهوس مع هذه البراعة في الكتابة ستصيب القارئ بعدوى حميدة.

لا مناص من التاريخ
بصفته مؤرخاً لا يشق له غبار، سنجد المؤلف في هذا الكتاب يتتبع الترتيب التاريخي للعبة منذ نشأتها وحتى آخر كأس للعالم إبان صدور الطبعة الأخيرة. بالإضافة إلى ذلك، فهو عندما يروي وقائع كأس عالم لسنة معينة، فهو يسردها مشفوعة بالظروف السياسية مثل الحروب الكبرى والانقلابات والثورات وغير ذلك. غاليانو يعرف كيف يكون مسلياً دون أن ينسى التاريخ وجدّيته.

نزعة إنسانية
يتعاطف غاليانو مع الإنسان دون تردد مهما كان السياق. في معرض الحديث عن اللعبة الأكثر شعبية في العالم، نجده ينظر للاعب كإنسان أكثر من شيء آخر. يشفق عليه من اللعب في قيظ الظهيرة من أجل أن يناسب توقيت المباراة المشاهد الأوربي، يعطف عليه عندما يتعرض لكبوة في مسيرته، عندما يموت فقيراً أو منتحراً أو يتعرض لإصابة تضع حداً لتألقه. وليس ذلك فقط بل أن المؤرخ الأورغواني يعبر في كل مناسبة عن قرفه من تحول الرياضة إلى ماكينة أموال، يغلب عليها التسويق والاعتبارات الربحية. كما لا يحترم الكاتب أسلوب اللعب الملتزم الذي يحرم اللاعب من حريته في الإبداع على أرض الملعب.

قصص ووصف
قصدت هذا الكتاب بحثاً عن القصص الممتعة التي تدهشك أو تصدمك في عالم كرة القدم. أول تلك القصص التي سمعتها صغيراً، على سبيل المثال، هي اغتيال اللاعب الكولومبي أندريس اسكوبار جراء تسببه في هدف ضد منتخبه في كأس العالم عام 94. يزخر هذا الكتاب بالعديد من تلك القصص، لكن الكتاب أيضاً استغرق في وصف العديد من المباريات والأهداف؛ الأمر الذي لم أحبذه. نحن في زمن اليوتيوب، ومهما كانت براعة وصف الكاتب لتلك المجريات، فالأحرى بالراغب أن يشاهد الهدف، الموقف أو المباراة رأي العين بدلاً من قراءة وصفها بالكلمات. ومع ذلك لا أنكر بأن العديد من الأحداث المروية لم أكن لأعرف عنها لولا غاليانو وكتابه الجميل.

المؤرخ الساحر يروي لنا قصصاً عن الرياضة الساحرة، النتيجة نص متميز بالهوس المعتدل والشغف الشديد.

Είχα ακούσει τόσα πολλά για τον άνθρωπο και συγγραφέα Εντουάρντο Γκαλεάνο, που έπρεπε κάποια στιγμή να τον γνωρίσω διαβάζοντας ένα από τα βιβλία του. Τρία έχω στην βιβλιοθήκη μου και αποφάσισα να έρθω για πρώτη φορά σε επαφή με το έργο του, πιάνοντας το βιβλίο που έγραψε για το ποδόσφαιρο, τόσο το δικό του αγαπημένο άθλημα, όσο και το δικό μου (καθώς και εκατοντάδων εκατομμυρίων άλλων ανθρώπων ανά τον κόσμο).

Λοιπόν, δηλώνω μαγεμένος. Τόσο από το ταξίδι πίσω στον χρόνο και την ευκαιρία που μου έδωσε ο συγγραφέας να γνωρίσω παλιούς θρύλους του ποδοσφαίρου και να ταξιδέψω στα διάφορα Μουντιάλ που εγώ δεν είχα την δυνατότητα να παρακολουθήσω όντας αγέννητος ακόμα (ή πολύ μικρός για να καταλάβω οτιδήποτε), όσο και από τον απίστευτο τρόπο να περιγράφει τους ποδοσφαιριστές, τα γκολ και τις φάσεις που του έκαναν εντύπωση. Ο Γκαλεάνο σε παίρνει από το χεράκι και σου δείχνει την μαγεία του ποδοσφαίρου, την διαδρομή του ανά τις δεκαετίες, και την κατάληξη του σ'ένα προϊόν που φέρνει αμύθητα κέρδη σε ομάδες, οργανώσεις και πολυεθνικές εταιρείες.

Το βιβλίο είναι χωρισμένο σε δεκάδες μικρά κεφάλαια, στα οποία γνωρίζουμε ποδοσφαιριστές, "βλέπουμε" υπέροχες φάσεις και ιστορικά γκολ, ζούμε τα Μουντιάλ, από το πρώτο μέχρι και το τελευταίο. Όμως ο Γκαλεάνο, όντας πολιτικά ενεργός και γεμάτος ανησυχίες, θίγει και πολλά ζητήματα που λίγο έως πολύ έχουν να κάνουν και με το ποδόσφαιρο. Με άλλα σχόλια μπορεί να συμφωνεί κανείς, με άλλα ίσως και να διαφωνεί, όπως και να'χει όμως είναι σημαντικά και δείχνουν το σκοτάδι που μπορεί να κρύβεται πίσω από τον φωτεινό κόσμο του ποδοσφαίρου (αλλά και γενικά της ανθρώπινης κοινωνίας). Η γραφή είναι πραγματικά υπέροχη, εξαιρετικά ευκολοδιάβαστη, με σκωπτική διάθεση και με έντονη αίσθηση του χιούμορ. Εκεί που άλλοι συγγραφείς θα έλεγαν τα ίδια σε δέκα σελίδες, ο Γκαλεάνο τα λέει σε δέκα σειρές.

Αυτά. Είναι ένα βιβλίο που οι ποδοσφαιρόφιλοι μεγάλης ηλικίας θα νιώσουν νοσταλγία διαβάζοντάς το, γιατί θα τους γυρίσει πίσω στον χρόνο και θα τους θυμίσει Μουντιάλ, ποδοσφαιριστές και γκολ που έγραψαν ιστορία, και που οι ποδοσφαιρόφιλοι μικρότερης ηλικίας θα λατρέψουν, γιατί θα τους δώσει την δυνατότητα να γνωρίσουν παλιούς θρύλους του ποδοσφαίρου και να κατανοήσουν γιατί το συγκεκριμένο άθλημα έχει λατρευτεί και δοξαστεί από τόσους ανθρώπους. Φυσικά η υπέροχη γραφή και τα διάφορα κοινωνιολογικής και πολιτικής φύσεως σχόλια μπορούν να ελκύσουν και αναγνώστες που δεν είναι και τόσο λάτρεις του ποδοσφαίρου.

كتاب سيُمتع القراء باعتباره أدبيًا وسيُمتع عشاق كرة القدم باعتباره كتابًا كرويًا مؤرخًا للعديد من الاحداث والوقائع فكيف بشخص مثلي يعشق هذين الأمرين حد الجنون!
سجعلك تُحس بأنك تلعب كرة القدم وانت جالس في سريرك ، يأخذ بيدك في جولة حول كواليس هذه اللعبة ، جمالها ، عنفوانها وحتى سلبياتها
كيف استطاعت كرة القدم ان توحد الشعوب وان تنهي حروبً أهلية..وبنفس الوقت ان تُشعل صراعات في نواحٍ اخرى!
تزامنت قراءتي لهذا الكتاب مع مشاهدة برنامج "الكورة مع سلامة" الذي يقدمه الدحيح على اليوتيوب ، فتداخل تأثير الكتاب مع البرنامج والعكس صحيح ليجعلاني أعشق هذه المستديرة أكثر فأكثر..

With the World Cup about to start, I thought now would be a good time to read the late Eduardo Galeano’s personal history of world football. Unfortunately, whilst I enjoyed the early stages of this book, I felt it deteriorated as it went on.

This definitely isn’t for anyone looking for a factual history of the game (I wasn’t). It’s an idiosyncratic story told through a series of vignettes that the author wanted to highlight, and most of them relate to his own country of Uruguay. The reference to “sun and shadow” is I think a reference to the author’s own feelings about the contrast between the modern game and that which he remembers from his youth. He’s very much a football romantic, despairing of the modern emphasis on discipline, organisation, and “hard work” and hankering instead for the days of short passes to feet and “the insolent winger” who runs at and feints past defenders.

I was really taken with the first third or so. The author writes with humour and considerable zest about the beginnings of football in South America, and of course about the dominant Uruguay teams of the 1920s and 1930s. There are quite a few errors though, even allowing that this isn’t meant as an authoritative history. For example, the famous game played between British and German soldiers during the “Christmas Truce” of 1914 is for some reason described as having taken place on Christmas Day 1915. In talking about José Leandro Andrade, the black Uruguayan footballer who was a star of the 1924 Paris Olympics, Galeano says “Europe had never seen a black man play football.” Not quite true, and as a Scotsman I will always pay tribute to the trail blazed by Andrew Watson, a black player capped 3 times by Scotland in 1881 and 1882.

A major part of the history of the Beautiful Game has been the rivalry between Europe and South America. It’s been said that the heart of football lies in Europe but that its soul lies in South America, a comment with more than a kernel of truth. For all that, many Europeans have a soft spot for Brazilian football in particular. For a variety of reasons Argentina and Uruguay are much less popular, but even then there remains a grudging respect for the skill of players like Maradona or Luis Suárez. The author certainly doesn’t reciprocate any of those feelings. If you believe this book, no European team ever beat a South American one except by biased refereeing or official favouritism. Complaints of this type are unfortunately typical of the second half of the book, where Galeano essentially becomes a grumpy old man who complains about everything - the commercialisation of the game, the lack of creativity and expression, the corruption within FIFA (OK, he’s right about that bit…) and anything else you can think of. The whole thing descends into a bit of rant, and it’s all too one-sided for my taste.

Entertaining in parts, but also irritating.

Postscript Sept 2018. I got an email from Amazon telling me they sent the wrong version of this book to my Kindle. It's now been updated. I've had a quick look and the new version doesn't look that different, and I'm not inclined to read the whole thing again, but I have to allow that getting the wrong version may have influenced my comments.

"Some people think that football is a matter of life and death. I assure you, it's much more serious than that."

Bill Shankly, the legendary Liverpool manager & an immortal figure in footballing history, was not much off the mark with this famous quote of his. And Eduardo Galeano's book seems to reverberate that sentiment, though in much spectacular detail.

"Soccer in Sun and Shadow" is easily the most beautiful book written on the Beautiful Game in every respect. Beauty lies in simplicity & the joy of reading this book comes from its elegant yet effortless writing. In fact, Galeano abhors the language of the so-called 'soccer doctors' or the football analysts & commentators while mocking them for complicating the game more than necessary through the use of fancy words & terminologies which the common man doesn't understand. He presents a utopian vision of the game - how the game ought to be played in today's world, where winning has become so vital that adventure is sacrificed for the sake of efficiency.

The chapters are very short indeed, some of them barely a page or so. Through these chapters, the book explores every aspect of the sport, be it the origins of the sport, the players, the clubs, the managers, the rules, the referee (most maligned individual), fans or the 'fanatics'. One gem of a saying about fanatics goes as follows - "For the fanatic, pleasure comes not from your own club's victory, but from the other's defeat." So true.

Galeano takes delight in amazing the reader with a slew of extraordinary anecdotes, some of them bordering on the unbelievable. We have the Italian forward Meazza dropping his pants on his way to taking a penalty, for it seemed the only way to beat the stolid goalkeeper - by making him break down in laughter. Coming back to the fanatic for a moment, Galeano recounts how a Boca Juniors fan on his deathbed pronounced his last wish - he wanted to be wrapped in a flag of rival club River Plate so that when he died, he could feel that as if "it was the death of one of theirs". There is a hilarious incident regarding a referee, who starts the game with the fans mourning for his recently-deceased mother but is immediately cursed & heckled by them when a decision goes against their team. As Sanfilippo replays a stunning goal in a shopping mall where once a stadium had stood as everyone applauds, one can't help feeling present on the very day the goal was being scored in the stadium, watching it happen with their own eyes. We have a couple of Mexican journalists about to be executed by Bosnian renegade soldiers in war-torn Sarajevo when one realises they belong to the country of Hugo Sanchez, the great Real Madrid striker & it all ends happily in laughter and embraces. And then comes the world's longest penalty shootout, which finally saw its conclusion after 44 kicks but no one ever knew which team won, for there were no spectators left in the stadium by the time it ended.

Galeano recounts his admiration for some of the greatest footballers & the goals they scored through distinct chapters dedicated to them - Di Stefano, Puskas, Garrincha, Didi, Beckenbauer, Pele, Yashin, Eusebio, Cruyff, Muller, Zico, Romario, Baggio & last but not the least, Maradona - showering a lavish amount of praise on each of these legends. And these are only a select few, for Galeano writes about them comprehensively & gives us a thorough account of the history of the game. He also writes about the World Cup tournaments held till date in the backdrop of major international events of respective years, which includes a running gag about Fidel Castro & the Americans as well.

But Galeano also recognises that all is not that rosy behind the scenes - some things are indeed very wrong & threaten the very existence of the sport itself. He is extremely critical of the boring but efficient brand of soccer doled out by most teams, for winning is the only guarantee to the continuous inflow of the big bucks. He is not happy to see the bodies of footballers plastered with all kinds of brands, so much that he likens them to 'walking advertisement billboards'. And then there's the people who rule the game - men like Joao Havelange & (later) Joseph Blatter at the highest echelons of apex governing body FIFA who seem to care for nothing but the commercialization of the game through television rights & sponsorship, squeezing the cash cow to its last penny.

Galeano also focuses on issues that have hounded the sport like hooliganism, which he dismisses as a disgrace to the game by some fans who have nothing better to do (while sympathising with the background most hooligans come from). He feels disappointed when he hears fans screaming scornful chants, for the game that is supposed to promote love & sportsmanship goes down an altogether different route. He also highlights how dictators like Franco, Mussolini & those in South America have manipulated public sentiment through soccer - notably in the case of Real Madrid, which Franco projected as the royal team of Spain & their success in the 1950s & 60s only gave him more leeway to use it as a vehicle for propaganda to promote his brand of politics to the Spaniards as well as the world.

However, the writer still retains some hope that all is not yet lost, thanks to the young & refreshing ideas of upcoming coaches who aim to emerge victorious while entertaining the crowds. In a moment of self-realisation, Senor Galeano confesses that "Years have gone by and I've finally learned to accept myself for who I am: a beggar for good soccer. I go about the world, hand outstretched, and in the stadiums I plead: 'A pretty move, for the love of God.' And when good soccer happens, I give thanks for the miracle and I don't give a damn which team or country performs it." And he concludes the book on a nostalgic note, his final thoughts echoing that of every avid football lover - "soccer is a pleasure that hurts, and the music of a victory that gets the dead dancing is akin to the clamorous silence of an empty stadium, where one defeated fan, unable to move, sits in the middle of the immense stands, alone."

"Soccer in Sun and Shadow" is arguably the most compelling & erudite book ever written on football & Eduardo Galeano gives football lovers a book that they will savour & cherish for the rest of their lives. Highly recommended & a MUST READ for everyone whose lives have been enriched by the Beautiful Game.
