Squel to The white masaai, tells of Corinnes life few years after she left Kenya. As the title implies, her daughter plays a significant role in the narrative. Well back in Switzerland she goes on to live an average life. She has been hit by the MyPreciousChildPlague, drink red wine on weekends with fellow single mothers. Things go abit meta when she gets to the point where she writes about writing her first book and it's prequel (this book). Sh wven says in the book that she wrote a sequel out of presure from her readers. She probably hoped it would bring her further income aswell. The trip to Kilimanjaro feels driven by alterior book related motives rather genuine lust for adventure. Not impressed.

I read this book, primarily because I was looking to read books in German - which I am trying to get fluent at - and found this one laying in a Buchkasten (a small book shelf on the street where people give away used books) near my home in Munich.

I found it strictly ok. Well, like most people pointed out, the language is pretty straightforward, as in one's diary. So it did good with helping me practice the language. But it didn't give me a feeling of having read a book, purely because there is limited literary depth. And I don't mean, she should have used fancy words (normal words in German also big words, haha) but the expressions she uses are very banal and dreary. It also gave me a feeling that, at times, she overemphasized the distinction between Switzerland and Kenya. Duh, they ARE different worlds altogether.

Anyway, I gather this was her second book, and I haven't read the first one. Perhaps, there is some continuity I may have missed. But I doubt her writing style may have considerably improved in this one.

Interesting read!

I read this after reading The White Masai as I wanted to know what happened to Corinne in Switzerland. It was an easy read, and it was good to see how she adapted to life back in Europe and became successful. I love that she continued to support her family back in Kenya. I would recommend this book, if you found The White Masai interesting, and I am looking forward to reading the third book.

Obwohl ich den vorherigen Teil nicht gelesen habe, hat mich das Buch sofort in den Bann gezogen. Die Bewegende Geschichte von Mutter und Tochter, die fliehen und sich in einer "fremden" Welt zurecht finden müssen ist für mich sehr interessant. Auch die Bilder im Buch sind ein so privater Eindruck, der mit dem Leser geteilt wird, sodass man sich fühlt, als wäre man dabei. Es ist schon erstaunlich was für Hürden manche Menschen auf sich nehmen müssen, aber sie Autorin ist wirklich eine starke und bewundernswerte Frau aus meiner Sicht.

This is the sequel to "The White Masai". It goes into detail about how Corinne reentered her life in Switzerland with her Masai daughter. I thought she showed much determination to get back into society especially when you literally haven't seen a bathtub in four years (along with a washing machine and all modern conveniences such as running water).

I think the debate is whether she did the right thing in taking her daughter away from her father in Kenya. I don't think Corinne would have survived in Africa much longer and I do not think she would have survived without her daughter.

I do admire that she did not turn her back on her African family and offered financial support and contact with them for many years.

I love reading about people's journeys and I will read the third book when she returns to Africa and sees her ex-husband and his family for the first time in many years.

Am ales în această seară să vă scriu despre al doilea volum scris de Corinne Hofmann, apărut în Editura ALFFA în anul 2006. ,,Adio, Africa”, face parte din colecţia de ,,Cărţi adevărate”, exemple de viaţă, cărţi care te remontează după ce le citeşti şi îţi schimbă modul de a gândi şi visele.

Cartea ,,Adio, Africa” aduce libertate şi o nouă viaţă pentru Corinne, în timp ce pentru masaiul Lketinga aduce divorţul, pierderea fiicei, Napirai şi a averii lăsate de soţia sa. Suntem martorii decăderii unui bărbat, din cauza geloziei şi a comportamentului inuman de care a dat dovadă.

6 octombrie 1990 este data marcată cu roşu în calendar, deoarece Corinne fuge din Kenya alături de Napirai, fuge de lângă marea dragoste pe care a simţit-o în toată fiinţa sa, dar la care nu mai are curaj, putere şi încredere să se întoarcă.

După ce 4 ani a stat prin tufişuri în Kenya, alături de Lketinga şi a dus o viaţă de ,,mzungu”, deşi într-o viaţă anterioară simţea că face parte din tribul Samburu, Corinne a considerat salata proaspătă cu brânză şi salam, o delicateţe.

Ajunsă în Elveţia, în casa mamei sale, făcând eforturi să-şi revină după hepatita care o chinuia, Corinne încearcă să se adapteze într-o civilizaţie europeană, într-o lume plină cu maşini pe stradă, care o oboseau, într-o lume în care Napirai era studiată de copii şi mamele lor. Autoarea îşi caută un serviciu, pentru a avea un venit din care să trăiască, reuşeşte să divorteze de Lketinga după mari lupte birocratice şi se simte din nou femeie, nu doar mamă.

O doare mult plecarea din Kenya, dar mai ales depărtarea de familie. Ţine legătura cu James, fratele lui Lketinga, ajutându-i cu bani, trăieşte experienţa unei excursii pe Kilimanjaro şi întâlneşte o nouă dragoste, total diferită de cea pentru un masai.

Africa, înseamnă pentru Corinne ,,o luptă de supravieţuire până la graniţa cu moartea”.

Pe când în Europa, timpul trece repede, în Africa totul decurge lin, zilele par a fi mult mai lungi şi înveţi să ai răbdare. Răbdare a avut şi Corinne. Răbdare pentru a cultiva şi a creşte iubirea alături de masaiul care avea grijă de ea, când era bolnavă, care o spăla pe cap şi se juca cu Napirai. Dar amintirile frumoase, pe care le simţea, pe care le dorea în mintea ei, erau înlocuite de gelozia lui Lketinga, de actele lui de furie, de faptul că nu a ştiut să gestioneze averea pe care Corinne i-a lăsat-o, doar pentru a-şi recâştiga libertatea.

Povestea de iubire, experienţele trăite într-o lume diferită de cea europeană, în care bolile îţi aduc moartea a fost scrisă, pentru că emoţiile şi trăirile erau prea puternice în mintea ei şi a vrut să le împărtăşească împreună cu cei care iubesc Africa şi vor să o descopere, să o cunoască, să o simtă, să o înţeleagă.

În Africa, plângi doar atunci când a murit cineva, pe când în Europa, dai frâu liber lacrimilor pe obraz, când eşti fericit, când eşti îndurerat, când iubeşti, când poveştile te răscolesc şi îţi chinuie prezentul.

Cel mai emoţionant moment pentru mine, a fost cel în care Corinne o ia în braţe pe Napirai şi plânge după Kenya, după un vis distrus:

,, De ce plângi? Te-ai lovit? Altfel, tu nu plângi niciodată!”

,,Nu m-am lovit, scumpa mea, plâng, poate, pentru că nu am reuşit să fiu fericită cu tatăl tău.”

,,Dar mă ai pe mine!”, îmi răspunde ea, suspinând.

În viaţă, trebuie să luăm decizii care duc la astfel de momente emoţionante. Gândul că peste tot în lume, fetele sunt cele maltratate într-un fel sau altul, gândul că fiicei lor, Napirai i se putea face incizie la o vârsta fragedă conform tradiţiei şi regulilor africane o marchează nu doar pe autoare, ci pe oricine citeşte această carte.

Corinne a ales pentru fiica lor, a ales pentru libertate, deşi iubirea dintre ea şi masai, nu se va şterge niciodată pentru a scrie o altă poveste cu parfum european.

Deşi diferiţi, Corinne şi Lketinga au trăit cu o intensitate maximă fiecare moment din viaţa lor. Autoarea nu le-a înţeles limba şi tradiţiile, dar le-a acceptat timp de 4 ani.

Nicht so gut als ihr erstes Buch. Es hört sich eher an wie ei Tagebuch, wobei ihr erstes Buch richtig spannung hatte. Wahrscheinlich auch, weil sie das erst viele Jahre nach ihrem Rückkehr geschrieben hat und daher nicht so an eine genaue tageweise Auflisting gebunden war.

Erst als sie über den Urlaub auf dem Kilimandscxharo schreibt, erreicht Corinne wieder den Stil vom ersten Buch und möchte man das Buch auch nicht mehr weg legen.

Deci nu m-am putut abtine : după ce am citit "îndrăgostită de un masai" am avut nevoie sa știu ce s-a întâmplat cu Corinne și cum s-a adaptat înapoi în Elveția .
Și cartea nu a dezamăgit . Sau poate am avut un moment de meh când a urcat pe Kilimanjaro in ideea in care nu am văzut nici o utilitate in aceasta acțiune . Pe de altă parte ca absolventa de drept pierderea rezidentei in Elveția , statutul de femeie căsătorita sau necăsătorită conform legislației europene urmând de divorț și actele pentru Napirai au făcut din paginile cărții o lectură interesanta . A fost interesant sa vad și reacția familiei din Kenia fata de atitudinea fostului soț și oarecum o înțeleg pe Corinne că a vrut să își ajute fosta soacra și fostul cumnat . Dar nu am sa înțeleg de ce să își ajute fostul soț . A fost interesant sa descoper o Corinne matura și înțelegând că diferențele culturale oricum ar fi dus la un divorț dar cu toate acestea mă întreb oare aceasta a simțit cu adevărat dragoste față de soțul ei Masai ? Cu toate acestea am sa dau 5 steluțe pe ideea că nu pot da 4 jumătate ;)))

I ended up giving both this and the first book similar ratings, though for different reasons. This was absent many of the cultural-difference things that bothered me in the first book, in large part (I think) because nobody in Back from Africa was being asked to change. The author didn't have to change her expectations of what was acceptable in order to live in Switzerland again; neither did anyone she dated or spent time with. Because of this I had a lot fewer unanswered questions by the end of this book.

The reason I didn't give it a higher rating, then, is simply because -- while the pace was fine -- there wasn't a ton of substance. She covered a lot of ground, starting with getting off the plane with her infant daughter and continuing with the tale until her daughter was a preteen. It's not a long book, and there isn't a whole lot of conflict: finding a job, switching jobs, finding new flats as needed, eventually writing The White Masai. It's fine, and the writing isn't objectionable, but I suppose I'd expected more focus on the struggle to reintegrate and so on. (Also, because the author grew up in Switzerland, very little of what she was going through was culturally different to her, which takes the tension down somewhat.)

Probably what it comes down to, though -- why I rounded down rather than up -- is that there's a reason I have an Africa shelf (but no Switzerland shelf or Europe shelf, though the latter might change), and this only barely fits into it.

Corinne Hofmann has led a very interesting life however I'm not sure she's someone I would get along with for various reasons. I found myself at times during the book commenting about negatives I saw in her personality but apart from that a very interesting read. She comes across as an incredibly selfish person but I enjoyed learning some more about African culture, even if from a particular point of view. This book is her return however she still discusses her time in Africa and return to Europe which is another bureaucratic nightmare in itself. Overall, not as interesting as the first one but does add on so worth reading if you've read the first one and didn't find her too aggravating.

Visto il successo del primo libro non ho potuto non leggere il sequel. Ho faticato tanto per trovarlo anche perché non esiste una traduzione in italiano e ho dovuto comprarlo in spagnolo ma é stata una lettura piacevole ugualemente.
Devo essere sincera, ho apprezzato questo libro più per la curiosità di sapere come sarebbe continuata la vita di Corinne una volta tornata in Svizzera più che per la qualità del libro in sé. Non dico che non mi sia piaciuto il libro, però l'ho letto con una certa lentezza più che altro per la mancanza di colpi di scena o per la linearità del racconto. Le pagine raccontano il ritorno in Svizzera dell'autrice e il suo doversi riabituare a un mondo civilizzato. Lo consiglio a tutti coloro che hanno letto "la masai bianca" (un libro da leggere assolutamente) e sono curiosi di sapere cosa succede dopo, non lo consiglio a chi é in cerca una lettura emozionante.
