This book checks all my boxes for “masterpiece”. It is beautiful, brutal and efficient, a darkly comic morality tale that offers equal measures of trepidation and pleasure. The opening paragraph plainly reveals the story arc, yet Nabokov makes it imperative that the reader stick around for its whole dirty telling. There are enough other reviews that summarize the plot, so I will just add that the pleasure in reading Nabokov is... well, it’s the pleasure in reading Nabokov. Everyone should read him. The story-telling often overtakes the story, which just enriches the experience.
