The novel was a pleasant continuation of the time warp to 17th century France initiated in “The Three Musketeers”. Dumas has taken the four heroes and superimposed them on actual historical events. At times this was quite exhilarating, while it could also be a marathon slog of names referring to countesses, princes and other royal figures involved in these events. I do wish that Dumas had more of a psychological level in his writing, as the characters at times appear as two-dimensional stereotypes of lovable heroes. Honor, valor and everlasting devotion to the Queen! Allowing myself to disregard this wish of “depth” was the key to my enjoyment. After all, I was really intent on an adventure with the musketeers and that is exactly what Dumas delivered in this thick behemoth of a novel. I did find plenty of pleasure in traveling the dirt roads and plotting against enemies in the company of our heroes. The old translation was also delightful with its intricate vocabulary and sentences. More please...
