The novel is about a writer named Sidney Orr (Orlovsky), who, after making a miraculous recovery from near fatal illness, buys a new notebook and starts writing a story about a man who completely changed his life when he realized how much his existence was ruled by randomness.

Grande scrittura, alcune trovate geniali, un finale leggermente al di sotto delle mie aspettative, ma, in definitiva, un romanzo che attrae e cattura fin dalla prima pagina, questo libretto di Haruki Aust... oops, Paul Muraka... pardon, Paul Auster!

L'incipit è intrigante
Ero stato malato per molto tempo . Il giorno in cui lasciai l’ospedale camminavo a fatica e quasi non ricordavo più chi avrei dovuto essere. Usi la volontà, mi disse il medico, e in tre o quattro mesi tornerà come prima. Non gli credetti, ma seguii lo stesso il suo consiglio. Mi avevano dato per morto, e ora che avevo smentito i pronostici evitando misteriosamente di morire, che scelta mi restava se non vivere come se mi aspettasse una vita futura?

Dopo un incidente a cui è riuscito miracolosamente a sopravvivere, Sidney Orr ricomincia, con un po' di fatica, a scrivere.
Grazie a un taccuino blu, proveniente dal Portogallo, e che sembra avere poteri magici, comincia a svilupparsi la trama di questo romanzo di Auster.
Con La notte dell'oracolo di Auster, si entra nel meta-romanzo, un romanzo nel romanzo in cui confluiscono diverse storie. Da un lato, la storia privata di Sidney e del suo matrimonio con la moglie Grace e dall'altro quella di Sidney scrittore e delle varie vicende che si intrecciano e prendono forma.
Qui sono presenti alcune delle tematiche tipiche dei libri dell'autore: l'amore, il tradimento, la bellezza della scrittura come rimedio ai propri mali, come salvezza e la bellezza della scrittura intesa come ritorno alla vita.
Paul Auster trascina il lettore in una vicenda in cui finzione e realtà si mescolano, dove il protagonista assume il ruolo di investigatore per scoprire una realtà e una verità molto più forte del romanzo che sta scrivendo e di qualsiasi oracolo.

Auster's favourite theme is randomness, chance. And we see it again in this novel, which is a story within a story within a story, told in Auster's favourite narrative style. Given that there is so much ground to cover in this short book, I'm not sure there is any other way but to "tell" this story. However, only the main story line heads towards any type of conclusion in this book, while the others stall midway, again, demonstrating randomness, perhaps?

I like this book because it deals with the life of a writer, Sydney Orr, who has suffered a long illness and is just picking up his interrupted life. It is also a good study on plotting, for Auster weaves plot within plot in his embedded stories - quite deftly, it seems. Sometimes randomness can be a cop-out, when new plot points are introduced just to hype things up or slow things down. The late arrival of Jacob Trause, the truant son of Syney's mentor John Trause, and his suddden but drastic impact on the course of the narrative, pushes the concept of "chance" a bit too far. Auster also experiments with putting back-story and other non-essential detail into lengthy footnotes that overlap several pages and that can be read ( or not) to enhance the depth of the main storyline - this device worked for me..

The lesson of randomness however, is quite powerful, because after the random event, all previous efforts by those affected seem trivial and unecessary.Which begs the question of whether one should strive in life or just go with the flow?

Dei-me conta que faz 23 anos que descobri os livros de Paul Auster. Deambulava pela livraria da faculdade, o meu sítio preferido para passar o tempo, e o "The New York Trilogy" chamou-me à atenção. Depois desse, comprei o "Moon Palace". E outros se seguiram ao longo dos anos. Depois publicou 2 ou 3 livros que não me entusiasmaram e durante muito tempo depois disso não li mais nada. Até ter publicado o 4 3 2 1, livro que entrou para a lista dos melhores livros da minha vida, a partir daí passei a querer redescobrir o que tinha ficado para trás.
"Oracle night" não tinha uma premissa atraente, mas apesar de tudo fui incapaz de pousar o livro. A escrita, o ritmo, a maneira como queremos saber o que vai acontecer de seguida, tudo isto faz deste livro uma boa leitura. Mesmo que o final não tenha sido brilhante, a viagem valeu a pena.

It was the tragic, real-life story of Paul Auster's son, Daniel, that led me to reading this book. Daniel, a long-time heroin addict who was part of the New York club scene that spawned Michael Alig and the Angel Melendez murder (the story, if you're unfamiliar, was splashed across every tabloid in NYC for weeks when the torso of a missing drug dealer injected with Drano surfaced on a Staten Island beach), recently ended his own tumultuous life on in a similarly twisted fashion by OD'ing on a subway platform in Brooklyn. Worse yet, in an almost unfathomable twist of fate, his 11-month-old daughter had also died of a heroin overdose while in his care, several months prior. After reading a lurid article in the NY Post that quoted a family friend as saying that Jacob in Oracle Night was a thinly veiled version of Daniel—he compared his monstrous behavior to Damien in The Omen, as Daniel allegedly tortured Auster's second wife with the same vengeance as the character—I developed a morbid curiosity about Daniel's predilection toward evil.

In any case, I strongly suspect the book helped Paul Auster exorcise these likely feelings of guilt and remorse and frustration toward his son (Jacob ends up causing a cascade of bad things to happen near the end of the story). The story begins with the narrator having recovered from a near-death fall and his struggle to retain a firm grasp on reality when he's mostly shuffling around in a muddled, dissociative stage of mind. In one of these moments of fugue, he happens upon a stationary store that sells a blank notebook that he becomes strangely obsessed with. The notebook, as it turns out, is tinged with bad karma, and the story he so feverishly penned soon reaches a standstill that can't be broken, though many narratives come forth from it, including several that spill over into his personal life. Later, he's forced to reckon with evil incarnate in the form of his friend's son Jacob, a sullen drug addict whose past behavior includes spitting in people's faces and kicking them in the stomach—clearly there are parallels to his own life.

There's a level of intimacy in Auster's writing that I really connected with, almost as if he planted himself in a back booth in a dim, smoky restaurant, leaned across the table, drink in hand, and said, “OK, I'm going to tell you a story that will blow your mind” You emerge, three hours later, drunk and giddy with no idea what time it is or why it's now dark out, but feeling as though you have been taken into this man's confidence, his meandering story providing just the right dose of hyperbole and truth to keep you guessing.
