যার উদ্দেশ্যে তিনি বলেছেন "Now that I have declared the foundation of my love, I surrender this century to you: wooden sonnets that rise only because you gave them life."

10/10

I have been consuming poetry in the last few months at an inordinate rate. I enter phases -- cycles in my life where it's easier to read poetry than prose; more importantly, where my life demands poetry more than it does prose. It's silly, in that context, to add long passages of my boring prose to describe what Neruda does perfectly in poems. All I can add is, if you haven't read Neruda, or haven't read him lately, do your soul a favour and pick up this little book, even if you borrow it from the library, and go sit quietly for an hour.

How many times, love, I loved you without seeing you
and maybe without recollection,
not recognizing your glance, not looking at you, a centaur,
in adverse regions, in a burning midday:
you were just the scent of grains I love.

Perhaps I saw you, I imagined you in passing lifting a glass
in Angol, by the light of the moon in June,
or you were the waist of that guitar
I played in the darkness, and it sounded like the excessive seas.

I loved you without knowing it, and I looked for your memory.
In the empty houses I entered with a lantern to steal your portrait.
But I already knew how you were. Suddenly

while you were there with me I touched you and my life stopped:
before my eyes you were, ruling me, and you reign.
Like a bonfire in the forests, fire is your kingdom.

````````````````
Cuántas veces, amor, te amé sin verte y tal vez sin recuerdo,
sin reconocer tu mirada, sin mirarte, centaura
en regiones contrarias, en un mediodía quemante:
eras sólo el aroma de los cereales que amo.
Tal vez te vi, te supuse al pasar levantando una copa
en Angol, a la luz de la luna de junio,
o eras tú la cintura de aquella guitarra
que toqué en las tinieblas y sonó como el mar desmedido.
Te amé sin que yo lo supiera, y busqué tu memoria.
En las casas vacías entré con linterna a robar tu retrato.
Pero yo ya sabía cómo era. De pronto
mientras ibas conmigo te toqué y se detuvo mi vida:
frente a mis ojos estabas, reinándome, y reinas.
Como hoguera en los bosques el fuego es tu reino.
PS This is a lovely edition which includes paintings by Gabriela Campos.
“Kini saat aku mendekarasikan fondamen-fondamen cintaku, aku persembahkan alaf ini kepadamu: sonata-soneta kayu yang lahir hanya karena engkau memberinya kehidupan” (Pablo Neruda dalam Ciuman Hujan)
Cinta, cinta dan cinta
Terpana oleh cinta
Terpesona dalam kata
Derasnya ciuman kata dari bibirmu
Basahi kering hatiku
Banjiri kerontang jiwaku
Hujani dahaga diriku
Sepanjang hari, ayat-ayat cinta itu terus bertasbih
Sepanjang waktu, tarian kata itu terus bernyanyi
Tanpa henti
Entah itu pagi, senja, petang ataupun malam hari.
Panas, membara dan bergelora
Hangat seperti mentari musim semi
Tetapi sekaligus tajam seperti duri
Oh No. Cinta. Satu kata ajaib dan misterius yang bisa membuat banyak orang terpesona dan kelimpungan dibuatnya. Manis, pahit sedu dan sedannya. Sakitnya, indahnya, suka dan dukanya. Cintalah yang mewarnai dunia. Menjadikan dunia tak hanya hitam, putih dan abu-abu. Kumpulan seratus sonata ini merangkai dgn begitu indahnya kata-kata cinta. Walaupun terkadang liar, panas dan menggelora. Dan terkesan terlalu gombal dan lebay. Tetapi, perempuan mana sih yang ga suka dirayu? Selama dia masih perempuan normal. Pasti tetap terpengaruh sama yg namanya rayuan dan kata-kata manis. Walupun hanya sedikit. Bahkan walaupun tahu kalau rayuan itu hanyalah palsu belaka.
Kalau si penulis masih hdp di jaman sekarang, dan seumuran (bukan aki2 pastinya), ada di depan mata dan menuliskan soneta2 ini untuk saya, sepertinya saya akan jatuh cinta padanya ^^
Lelaki adalah buaya, binatang. Tetapi perempuan adalah penyayang binatang :P itulah kenapa saya tak suka sama yang namanya perempuan.
My comment would be: 'written on the wings of butterflies.'
"I want you to know
one thing.
You know how this is:
if I look
at the crystal moon, at the red branch
of the slow autumn at my window,
if I touch
near the fire
the impalpable ash
or the wrinkled body of the log,
everything carries me to you,
as if everything that exists,
aromas, light, metals,
were little boats
that sail
toward those isles of yours that wait for me.
Well, now,
if little by little you stop loving me
I shall stop loving you little by little.
If suddenly
you forget me
do not look for me,
for I shall already have forgotten you.
If you think it long and mad,
the wind of banners
that passes through my life,
and you decide
to leave me at the shore
of the heart where I have roots,
remember
that on that day,
at that hour,
I shall lift my arms
and my roots will set off
to seek another land.
But
if each day,
each hour,
you feel that you are destined for me
with implacable sweetness,
if each day a flower
climbs up to your lips to seek me,
ah my love, ah my own,
in me all that fire is repeated,
in me nothing is extinguished or forgotten,
my love feeds on your love, beloved,
and as long as you live it will be in your arms
without leaving mine.
Sepasang napas cintaku, sebab aku harus mencintaimu:
itu sebabnya aku mencintaimu saat kau tidak mencintai,
dan aku mencintaimu ketika apa pun yang lain kucintai.
Iseng membaca 100 Soneta Cinta karena tergeletak di meja ruang tamu rumah. Hanya adik dan ibu saja yang memiliki koleksi buku-buku puisi. Dan melihat nama Neruda, aku merasa wah tidak ada salahnya untuk mencoba membacanya. Lagipula, aku sudah ribuan kali mendengar pujian akan puisi-puisi Neruda tetap belum sekalipun membacanya.
Seperti yang tertulis jelas pada judul serta deskripsi, buku ini berisi 100 soneta cinta dari Neruda untuk istrinya, Matilde. Diterjemahkan dengan indah oleh Aan Mansyur, pembaca masuk ke dalam bagaimana cintanya Neruda kepada Matilde. Setidaknya itulah yang aku rasakan selama membaca 100 Soneta Cinta. Dibagi ke dalam tiga bagian: Pagi, Siang, dan Malam, senota-senota ini seakan memiiki nuansanya masing-masing.
Dalam kisah ini akulah satu-satunya orang yang akan mati--
semata aku. Aku mati oleh cinta karena aku mencintaimu, karena mencintaimu, Kekasih, dalam kobar darah dan api.
Ada perasaan mengharukan sekaligus ingin merasakan bagaimana hebatnya rasa cinta sehingga bisa menghasilkan soneta-soneta indah itu. Matilde pasti adalah wanita beruntung.
Melalui 100 Soneta Cinta, aku ingin menjadi Matilde dan ingin menjadi Neruda: jatuh cinta dengan teramat sangat kepada orang yang tepat.
Probably my most favorite poet of contemporary times. Neruda uses language and nature to bring out the truthfulness of beauty, desire, love, and lust. The honesty and comparisons of love to simple and pure things in nature makes me wish I knew spanish and could read his writings in his native language.
He also divides his sonnets into the catagories of morning, afternoon, and night, with each infiltrating new or different dimensions of love. Not always happy or unrealalistic, Neruda is honest in his declarations of love. We are not always in the beginning of love with someone, which is what I believe is what the 'morning' sonnets describe. The 'afternoon' sonnets are more honest and discerning of his object. In the 'evening' sonnets it's almost as love has finally made a full circle. Blissfully honest, simple, and raw romanticism. Te amo!
So this was two compilations in one: 100 Love Sonnets and 20 Love Poems and a song of despair. I liked the love sonnets okay, he used a ton of metaphors about nature and food. Some hit me in the feels, but most were too abstract for my brain to comprehend.
I really loved the 20 love poems and song of despair. Those were more straightforward about feelings than trying to weave metaphors about love and sex. Well done!
''Γεμάτη θλίψη αγνή αγροικά η στέγη
βροχές πανάρχαιες ξέφυλλες να πέφτουν,
φτερά κι ό,τι έχει η νύχτα φυλακίσει:
κι έτσι σε καρτερώ σαν έρμο σπίτι
να γυρίσεις και να με κατοικήσεις.
Αλλιώς τα παραθύρια με πονάνε''.
