Borges, maestro Borges, infinito Borges. Una muestra más de la incomparable inteligencia y del talento narrativo del mejor de los escritores argentinos (y de uno de los mejores de habla hispana, sólo detrás de Cervantes y quizá algún otro). Eso sí, tengo que reconocer que, para mí, Ficciones es superior. Me gusta mucho más el Borges universal que el Borges criollo y gauchesco. Pero, bueno, eso es sólo una cuestión de gusto.

Há dias (por "culpa" de uma amiga do Goodreads) ouvi uma pequena história de Jorge Luis Borges que me impressionou:
Um dia, junto das pirâmides do Egipto, Borges apanhou um punhado de areia, largou-o mais à frente e disse: "Estou a modificar o deserto.
...e, através da sua escrita, modifica a mente de quem o lê...

Dos dezassete contos, incluídos neste livro, não gostei muito da maior parte deles. Ou porque não os compreendi (perdida em labirintos infinitos); ou porque não foram "escritos para mim". Mas....dos dezassete "guardei" três, aos quais junto a frase lá de cima.
Para O Imortal e Deutsches Requiem cinco punhados de areia; para O Aleph o deserto inteiro...

Reading Borges is such an exhausting experience—the dry, pseudo-scholarly tone, the literary and historical allusions, the constant flipping back and forth between the text and the endnotes. A story of a couple of pages takes on the density of an entire novella. In Ficciones, his most celebrated collection, this is far outweighed by the highly complex, abstract stories that read as though they were dreamed by a distant god. It’s for these glimpses into the infinite that I read Borges, not for the lowbrow stories of gauchos and knife fights, made unnecessarily complicated yet devoid of his usual insight, with only a mention here and there of a labyrinth, that dominate this collection by far. I usually include a quote or two (usually several) that I consider profound in my reviews—even for books I dislike—but I couldn’t for this one. So while Ficciones catered well to my tastes, this collection didn’t, and it’s no longer worth the effort of unraveling the web of Borges’s ideas. I’m leaving this unfinished—I’m reclaiming my time!

In contemplazione dell'universo

"Tutte le parti della casa si ripetono, qualunque luogo di essa è un altro luogo. Non ci sono una cisterna, un cortile, una fontana, una stalla; sono infinite le stalle, le fontane, i cortili, le cisterne. La casa è grande come il mondo."

"Nella Somma Teologica si nega che Dio possa far sì che il passato non sia stato, ma non si dice nulla dell'intricata concatenazione di cause ed effetti, che è tanto vasta e segreta che forse non si potrebbe annullare un solo fatto remoto, per insignificante che sia stato, senza infirmare il presente. Modificare il passato non è modificare un fatto isolato; è annullare le sue conseguenze, che tendono a esser infinite."

"So che alcuni operavano il male affinché nei secoli futuri ne derivasse il bene, o ne fosse derivato in quelli passati...Visti in tal modo, tutti i nostri atti sono giusti, ma sono anche indifferenti. Non esistono meriti morali o intellettuali."

Penso sia impossibile cercare di classificare Borges; né, al termine della lettura, risulta semplice condensare in breve spazio le innumerevoli tematiche toccate o semplicemente sfiorate.
Persiste, durante l’intera esperienza, un senso di vertigine che si spalanca alla frase rivelatoria o a quel passo che sembra essere la chiave per decriptare tutto; quasi come se Borges scoperchiasse un intero universo, il cui orizzonte di possibilità permette di precipitare in un altro universo ancora. Un circolo senza fine.
Borges, forse primo autore in assoluto, ha scardinato certezze, irriso le mie conoscenze - davvero scarse, il senso di vergogna m'opprime - e accantonato schemi mentali prefissati: l'esperienza di lettura diventa sì un'esplorazione di infiniti rimandi e citazioni, ma anche un gioco a incastri che possa dipanare le labirintiche costruzioni di un autore che con la letteratura ci sguazza, muore e rinasce.
Dal tema del doppio, come due facce della stessa medaglia, a partorire infinite realtà - la labilità della memoria in “L’altra morte” e “Storia del guerriero e della prigioniera”, quest’ultimo davvero commovente - si passa all’esercizio del ridimensionamento del gesto umano di fronte alla necessità dell’equilibrio - “L’immortale”, racconto cardine della raccolta, nonché il meraviglioso “Deutsches requiem”, a delineare il nazismo come necessità per la proiezione dell’opposto - e si approda a virtuosismi indimenticabili come “La casa di Asterione”, la cui gestione del materiale letterario trattato è finanche superba e “Abenjacan il bojarì, ucciso nel suo labirinto”, che carpisce il soggetto del racconto precedente per ribaltare l’intero contesto con un’indagine metafisica che accarezza il metaletterario.
In mezzo al marasma generale, da citare il racconto di chiusura, "L'Aleph", mostruosamente simpatico nel denudare il meccanismo alla base della letteratura e giustificare l'immensa conoscenza di importanti individualità che si sono avvicendate nella storia.

P.S. Divertente come Borges spieghi i suoi racconti come un prestigiatore sveli i propri trucchi: con semplicità e divertito distacco.

My first encounter with Borges. So far, it is difficult to describe my impressions and emotions, but all I can say is that I did not want the book to end. I read it very slowly and each story stayed with me for some time and caused a lot of thinking... I loved every minute of the experience.

'(..)Thus, all inadvertence is deliberate, every casual encounter is an engagement made beforehand, every humiliation is an act of penitence, every failure a mysterious victory, every death a suicide. There is no more cunning consolation than the thought that we have chosen our own misfortunes; that individual theology reveals a secret order, and in a marvelous way confuses ourselves with the deity. What unknown purpose (I thought) had made me seek out that evening, those bullets, this mutilation? Not the fear of war—I knew that; something deeper. At last I believed I understood. To die for a religion is simpler than living that religion fully; battling savage beasts in Ephesus is less difficult (thousands of obscure martyrs did it) than being Paul, the servant of Jesus Christ; a single act is quicker than all the hours of a man. In praise of ibn-Sharaf of Berkha, it has many times been said that only he was capable of imagining that the stars of the morning sky fall gently, like leaves falling from the trees; if that were true, it would prove only that the image is trivial. The image that only a single man can shape is an image that interests no man. There are infinite things upon the earth; any one of them can be compared to any other. Comparing stars to leaves is no less arbitrary than comparing them to fish, or birds. On the other hand, every man has surely felt at some moment in his life that destiny is powerful yet clumsy, innocent yet
inhuman. It was in order to record that feeling, which may be fleeting or constant but which no
man may escape experiencing, that Zuhayr's line was written. No one will ever say better

Alef içinde 17 öykü bulunduran tipik bir Borges kitabı, yine önsözü James Woodall yazmış, yine kimi çok kısa kimi nispeten uzun öyküler. Tıpkı 13 öykülük Kum Kitabı gibi.

Ben Borges’i sıradağlara benzetiyorum. Kimi zirvelere ulaşamıyorsunuz, kimi zirvelere kan-ter içinde varıyorsunuz, bazı zirvelere kolayca varıp hem zirveye varma keyfi yaşıyorsunuz hem de olağanüstü bir manzara seyrediyorsunuz. Bu dağlar yani Borges beni yoruyor kısaca. Evren, sonsuzluk, sınırsızlık ve sınırlılık, ölüm ve ölümsüzlük Borges’in favori temaları.

Bu kitabında Kabala, İslamiyet, Arap kültürü bolca yer almış. Kitapta hiç anlayamadığım (zirvesine varamadığım) “ Ölümsüz” ve “ Tanrıbilimciler” gibi öyküler yanında çok keyifle okuduğum (zirveye kolay vardığım) “Ölü” ve “ Deutsches Requiem” gibi öyküler ile araftaki yani zirveye zor bela vardığım “Emma Zun“ ve “Öteki Ölü” gibi öyküler var. Bir de İbn-i Rüşt’ü konu eden “ Averroes’in Arayışı” adlı öyküyü beğendim.

Bir eleştiri de yayıncıya; italik yazılan Latince sözlerin hiçbirinin açıklamasının olmaması okuyanı zora koşuyor, devamlı sözlük kullanmak yorucu. Zaten Borges gibi neredeyse tek uğraşı okumak olan bir kimsenin bilgi birikiminin sonucu olan mitolojiden tarihe, felsefeden edebiyata dair kullandığı bilgileri yazılarında takip etmek ayrı bir çaba gerektiriyor.

Kısacası zor bir öykü kitabı, okudum ama zorlandım.

El Aleph es una colección de cuentos (de ficción, la mayor parte) recopilada, si no me falla, por el mismo Borges, donde se exploran diversos temas que pasan por la inmortalidad y su opuesto, la divinidad, el significado de dios y todo esto lo conjunta con la metafísica, teología, filosofía y estoy seguro que hasta algo de metaliteratura hay por allí.

Y hay varios cuentos en la colección que me dejaron muy buena impresión, El Inmortal paso a ser uno que recomendaría sin dudas, El Aleph es probablemente el más fantástico de todos hasta con un ligero toque Ray Bradburidiano, Emma Zunz el más sencillo de entender pero aún así sorprendente, Albejacán el borají que discute la diferencia entre la realidad y lo que se cuenta (la ficción), realmente creo que hay increíble cantidad de ideas muy buenas en los 18 cuentos de la colección pero se requiere de cierto proceso para llegar a ellas.

Y esto es por la escritura de Borges que es una "harsh mistress", uno tiene que estar tremendamente concentrado en lo que se lee para que los párrafos no te tachen de tonto, recuerdo tener que empezar un cuento desde cero por el simple hecho de no estar poniendo suficiente atención a la lectura, es inútil usar este libro para pasar el rato lo cual estoy seguro que muchas personas hacen, y eso me explica el por qué de personas que lo califican de inentendible o sus reseñas son negativas, Borges en lugar de decirte, el universo abarca muchas dimensiones, le gusta tomar la ruta escénica y en algunos casos decirte lo que las flores significan para él, todo en el mismo viaje, sin mencionar que le encanta hacer referencias que van desde el Corán hasta Shakespeare pasando por Poe y gusta de los nombres árabes y alemanes.

Es imposible dar una calificación a toda la obra completa siendo que los cuentos tienen poca relevancia entre sí y no pienso discutir los detalles de cada uno, tengo otras cosas que hacer y leer, pero creo que la calificación es más que justa, de verdad pienso que es una buena recopilación aunque estoy seguro que no todos los cuentos dejan un buen sabor de boca o incluso un significado concreto, al final existe un epílogo de lo que Borges quiso expresar con algunos cuentos pero les recomendaría que ustedes buscaran el suyo.
