فأجابه صوت ضحكاتها :
- إنه يبكى عن ذكرى حبيبٍ و منزلِ .

عندما أنهيت هذا الكتاب وقفت حائراً أحاول تقيّمه فلٙم أفلح ؛
و ذٙلك لعدة أسباب .. أولهم :
هذا الكتاب ليس رواية ، و ليس مجموعة قصصية ، و ليس كتاب مقالي ، و لا يناقش أي قضية ..
هذا كتاب أحلام .. أحلام نجيب محفوظ
هذا الرجل الذي تعلّق بالكتابة حتى أصبح ليكتب الحلم الذي شاهده عقله الباطن !
و كعة الأحلام .. فهي درباً مِن الخيال ، مجموعة شخوص و أحداث لا علاقة لها ببعض ، إناسٌ توفت و إناسٌ لٙم تظهر في حياتك مِن الأساس !

إن لٙم تقرأ لنجيب محفوظ مِن قبل أنصحك ألا تبدأ بهذا الكتاب الغريب ؛ كي لا تنفر مِن كتابات أديبنا العظيم ..

لذلك قررت أن خير الأمور الوسط .

نجیب محفوظ کے آبرومندانہ نام کے سوا بدقسمتی سے ان خوابوں میں مجھے تو کچھ نظر نہیں آیا ماسوائے لاینحل باتوں کے۔
ایک سو چار خوابوں اور اتنے ہی صفحات میں اِدھر اُدھر دو چار خوبصورت خیال ریت کے ڈھیر میں ذرے کی طرح چمکتے مل جاتے ہیں اور بس۔
ان خوابوں کے معنی سمجھانے والی کوئی چیز اگر فرہنگ کی طرز پر کتاب کے ہمراہ ہوتی تو کتاب مجھے ایسے ٹھوٹ کے لئے شاید زیادہ سودمند رہتی۔

I've read a few books of "vignettes" before -- but never one comprised solely of a couple hundred of an author's dreams. Naguib Mahfouz, in case you're not familiar with him, is Egypt's lone winner of the Nobel in literature and is known as much for his writing as for the assassination attempt by militant Islamists that left him crippled in the early 1990s. He died just a few years ago, in 2006, and The Dreams is his last work. I received a copy of the book from the publisher, Anchor, who wanted me to review it over at BlogCritics. That review, which is longer, should be up soon.

Anyway. The book wasn't an easy read despite the relative brevity of many of Mahfouz's dreams. Some of them last a few pages, but many are only a few paragraphs, some only a few sentences. They're a lot like poetry -- lots of symbolism and such, in a very compact space. But it was a good read, though only now am I beginning to appreciate how much I learned about Egypt, Islam and general human nature from this one man's dreams. The only books I've read from the Arabic "literary tradition" are Season of Migration to the North (not my fave) and parts of the Thousand and One Nights, and I'm glad to be broadening my horizons.

I have another Mahfouz book on my shelf, a novel, also a review-in-waiting, and I'm excited already to give it a shot.

مش مجموعة قصصية، هي مجموعة أحلام بالضبط زي ما العنوان بيقول، لكن جامد جدا إنك تبقى بالقرب ده من نجيب محفوظ وتشوف مخاوفة وآماله الدفينة

"من موقفي في الحديقة رأيت سيدة في الستين مقبلة نحوي متجهمة الوجه وقالت بنبرة غاضبة: بسببك خسرت الجائزة.

وتذكرت السيدة ووجهها الحزين ولكني لم أفهم لقولها معنى واستمرت تقول: اللجنة استبعدت قصتي بحجة أنها نسخة من قصتك المطبوعة منذ أربعين سنة.

وضح كل شيء وعرفت أن الحظ السيء مازال يتعقب المرأة وواصلت حديثها:
أقسمت لهم أن قصتي لا يجوز أن تتهم بسبب بسيط وهو أنها قصة حياتي.
فقلت بانفعال: صدقت. أنا الذي اقتبست قصتي من حياتك الذي شاركت فيه أسوأ مشاركة.
فقالت وهى تضحك بسخرية: فرصة أن أكون ضحية لك في واقع الحياة لا في الخيال .."

بعض أحلام النجيب التي بدأ في تدوينها بعد توقفه عن الكتابة.
بعضها جيد وبعضها عادى.
لكن مجملاً، الكتاب خفيف وينتهي بجلسة.

دي أميات نجيب محفوظ ، لكن شتان مابين الأديب محفوظ والمريض الحقيقي سرور!!!
ألم محفوظ يقطر من بين الأحلام وثنيات السطور ..
هو هو محفوظ بفلسفته الباحثة عن الحقيقة والله والإيمان ..
محفوظ التصوف والمشاعر
محفوظ الذي أرهقه الإرهاب ووميض السكين على وريده وامات يمينه ..
محفوظ ..
محفوظ الذي تتألم وأنت تقرأ بعض أحلامه فتراها سطحية ومباشرة للغاية فتعزوها لمرضه وما مر به ..
الذي يتبرأ من الجائزة في بعض أحلامه ، ويتمنى إنفجارها بالجميع ..
الذي يحلم فيجيد الحلم ويناوشه ويستسلم إليه تارة ويهزمه أخرى !!!

أحلام فترة النقاهة..مجموعة قصصية لعم نجيب مقسمة ل ٢٣٠ حلم..كل حلم لا يتعدي ٥-٦ أسطر..
الأحلام الصراحة صعبة ومش واضحة وكعادة نجيب محفوظ أكيد في حاجة مقصودة وراء الكلام..بس أنا الصراحة مقدرتش أفهمهم..
لم يعجبني هذا الكتاب...

آسرة.
جنونية.
عابثة.
اللغة رائعة كعادة نجيب، مكثفة بشكل مهول!
وبعض الأحلام تحس فيها أنها أحلام حقيقية 100% كأنه ما دونها إلا ليعابثنا ويجعلنا نتوه في حل للرمز فيها، ولا رمز ثَمَّ! بل هي حلم لا معنى له.
وبعض الأحلام مرعب.
ولكن مجمل الأحلام يفوح منه عبق الحكمة، التي كان للعم نجيب حظ منها وافر.

This Book, These Short Dreams, these are your gateway to understand the core & mentality of our once in a Life time writer, Naguib Mahfouz.
He wrote these Short Dreams after his assassination trial, and it is reflected in many of the Dreams with him saying that he keeps looking behind his shoulders believing that someone is following his footsteps.
Not just that, it seems that after this incident, he found Life in Egypt no longer tolerable. He did write down a couple of ‘Dreams’ where he actually signed immigration papers with the aid of some of his friends for they no longer believed it neither safer nor right for him to keep on living here.
Furthermore, he makes it very evident that he has always missed his beloved one. That he spent his Life searching for her from one woman to the other. Idk whether he did find her at the end, and I dnt think he knows as well.
To add more, we can see very clearly that doubt has crept into the depth of his heart & mind. Doubt in the real essence of his writings, Doubt in whether his writing will survive ages & worlds or not, Doubt in his Family for he started to believe they found all his works to be nothing of worth, Doubt in the world that he thought himself to be living in
And Last but Not least, we see Mr Naguib Mahfouz describing the relationship between Egypt-America-Palastine-Arabs-Europe in more than one dream, expressing his own point of view and how he saw things were going back then at his time.

This is a book that I believe Mr. Naguib Mahfouz needed to write rather than wanted to write.
I am just not giving it a 5/5 because of the repetition of the ideas in his dreams, after all you cant find 230 different ideas and put them one Book
Nonetheless, This Book helped me strengthen the Bond with Naguib Mahfouz, it helped me respect him even more.

He wrote this after the years of silence that came after being stabbed twice in the neck by a religious extremist acting on orders from Omar Abd al-Rahman. Literally, Mahfouz was supposed to be silenced, but he eventually found his voice again. I don't know how to approach these vignettes, except that I try to do it the same way I do my dreams, when I remember them, and translate them as if they were impressionist paintings. Emotional impressionism. So it's the feeling that we're supposed to take away from it, I suppose, and the vignettes use tropes common in dreams, running slowly, sinking, flying, friends appearing from the floor etc.
