Am I reading this because I need to finish the reading challenge? YES.
Also because is Christmas.
Good book anyway.
Happy Christmas!

A classic for a reason. Thanks to my good fellow Patrick Stewart and his new TikTok account where he reads a little bit of A Christmas Carol at a time in front of a fire. Inspired me to take the audio e-book out of the library.

I planned to read this for Christmas back in November, or earlier, and when it got close to Christmas, I wasn't really in the mood, but decided to read it anyway. I also picked it up after watching the 1983 version of A Christmas Carol, so I don't think it was a good idea to read it back-to-back like that. It was all so fresh.

I'm surprised in the preface it said the book was never pious or sentimental, as if those were two bad things.
In the 1983 version of the movie the guys working for the charity didn't come to his office, and the boy didn't sing the carol outside his office. I remember that from the version with Patrick Stewart.
He says the first ghost will come tomorrow, the second the next night at the same time, and the third on the next night. Not all in one night.
It was sad that the ghosts tried to help people now but couldn't, because the power was lost to them forever. This is a pretty depressing, and scary view of the afterlife. If you didn't do your part and help others in your lifetime, you'd be doomed to wear chains and wouldn't be able to help people and make up for it in the afterlife.

The drawing of the Cratchit's didn't make them look poor. It was very cheery-looking, with pleasing colors. Their clothes didn't look old, the children looked well-fed and happy. It didn't capture what they were supposed to look like at all.
They skipped over the guessing game in here where Scrooge's niece by marriage says tight as scrooge's purse strings. Even though I'd just seen it, I wanted to read it in here.

The page with the ghost of Christmas future on it was pretty, with the deep blue of night, and all the lights of the city showing. However the black hood of the ghost blended in with the blue sky too much. All I saw was the pointed finger at first, and then saw the hood.

I don't care for writing like this: 'clash, clang, hammer, ding, dong, bell. Bell, dong, ding, hammer, clang, clash!'

It was confusing when it said Scrooge saw the man that walked into his counting-house that day, and then he says "and will you have the goodness"--and then whispers in his ear. If you hadn't seen the movie, you wouldn't know who the person was& what Scrooge had whispered.
He should have said they were the men looking for money for the poor. And that he whispered an amount to them.

It wasn't a good bridge from him being welcomed at his nephews to the next day at the office.
'Let him in! It is a mercy he didn't shake his arm off. He was at home in five minutes. Wonderful party, wonderful games, won-der-ful happiness!' and then 'but he was early at the office next morning.'
I wanted to hear dialogue between him and his nephew, his wife, and the others at the party, the games they played, etc. Not to just skip over the whole thing and jump to the next day.

I didn't like the ending. It was so sudden, right after surprising Bob with raising his pay. Same as with the movie, I'd like to see Scrooge at the Cratchit place. It gives the same lines as the movie& then the famous god bless us everyone.
The writing was pretty good, I liked reading the historical language. Some parts were a little confusing. Some dialogue from another person in the same paragraph as Scrooge, and some writing I didn't care for, little things like that, but nothing major.
I was surprised there were so many words on the page. I don't see young kids being interested in this, because it's so long, with words covering the entire pages.
