In this case I've waited for the Christmas time to meet this famous work of Charles Dickens, which I've used to fill the prompts of several reading challenges (Retópata #4: a novel which takes place in one single day; 52 Week Book Club #15: a book mentioned in another one -It never was so perfect, by Lamie Scott-. Now I've heard it as an audiobook and I don't know if its potential child audience of knowing in advance, in broad strokes, the so-many-times-adapted story, it has taken off some of its charm. It has funny, tender or even a bit of horror moments, that's why I'll allow it to be the door for the rest of this prolific Victorian writer...

OK well I feel like I cheated a little because it IS a Young Reader's Edition, but I had bought this several years ago because of the beautiful illustrations, so why not. And I do know that the movies made from this must practically write themselves, because they are so close to the source material. I always come away from this story with such a good feeling in my heart, whether reading or watching.

I always try to read A Christmas Carol every Winter as it is such an atmospheric and uplifting read. Dickens never fails to entertain. Each of his books has a special memory linked to it, because they are all consuming, I tend to hold the memory of the first read and it is forever set in my mind. They have that effect on you. The turns of phrase and his names are so fresh and thoughtful, even 150+ years later, I haven't read anybody else who can do what he did. My favourite line in the whole book is when it is said that Mrs Cratchit's gown is poor but it is "brave in ribbons". That to me sums up all that Dickens is, full of meaning, visually and metaphorically. A small but mighty book.

I read this book for the first time when I was a young teenager and I wanted to let it be a tradition to read it every year. That didn't happen and now I'm in my mid-thirties and I read it for the second time, though first time in English. The story is nearly two hundred years old but it still feels relevant.
The writing is one that I can't say I'm used to but it fits the book. The point of view is third person omniscient, which feels like it's not something often used these days and it took some time for me to get used to it.
I can't help but love this story. I wish some people these days would get a visit from the spirits, I think that'd do them good.
