رواية رومانسية اجتماعية عن الهجرة ورحلة البحث عن السراب، سراب الحب وسراب الذهب. رسمت الكاتبة الشخصيات ببراعة ودقّة. إضافة إلى جمال تصوير الأماكن ووصف عادات وثقافات الشعوب في كل من تشيلي الصين وكاليفورنيا.

برعت الكاتبة في سرد تاريخي عن الرق للفتيات الصينيات في أمريكا واستعبادهم دون رحمة. وحُمى جنون الذهب الذي تفشى في جميع البقاع، الهوس الجماعي للهرب والرحيل إلى كاليفورنيا. فكل شخص إما يهرب من ماضيه وإما من فقره للأرض المليئة بالذهب. منهم من قضى نحبه فيها، ومنهم قبل الوصول إليها، ومنهم من رجع إلى وطنه فقيرًا كما جاء إليها مُعدمًا. ومنهم من عرف كيف يستغل الأوضاع ليغتني ويجعل لنفسه موضع قدم فيها. أمريكا التي ظن البعض أنها أرض تحقيق الأحلام، لم تكن إلا بلد السراب والاستعباد والعنصرية.

رغم مرارة الأحداث التي مرّت بها المرأة في الرواية، بين الفشل وخيبة الأمل في الحب. أو النجاح في التمرد على العائلة والزواج بمن تحب، ثم البروز كسيدة أعمال مرموقة. أو الوقوع في الرق والمتاجرة بالجسد، إلا أن نهاية الرواية كانت جميلة، إلزا تحرّرت، تحرّرت من حبّ قيّد روحها وأعمى بصيرتها واستعبد قلبها ـ “إنني الآن حرة”.

كان الواقع حُلماً في حقيقة أمره ، وكانت صفحات " ابنة الحظ " الواقع الذي ألوذ إليه بمتعة ، وأهربُ منه بحماس ، الأحداث التي تعايشتها أشعرتني بإجماع جوارحي حقيقة جداً ، ما زلتُ أشعر بي هناك ، مع تاو تشين الطبيب الصيني ، مع إلزا الفتاة التي خاضت مغامرة رجولية بإمتياز في أرض الذهب حيث الجشع نحو الثراء والعُهر و الفُحش مع النساء ، كنت مع مس روز في حياتها ، بكُل تفاصيلها الصارمة ، مع جون البحار المغامر ، جيرمي الخالي من العواطف .. مع الجميع !
إيزابيل روائية مُذهلة بإمتياز ، قُدرتها العالية على لملمت شتات التاريخ ، وصنع منه قصة إستثنائية تستحق أن تضاف إلى رصيد الأدب التشيلي في وتتصدرها ، تستحق الإحترام ، تستحق القراءة ، لا لا بل تستحق أن تُعاش . في الواقع كنتُ أصفّها للجميع بأنها روائية تكتب في التاريخ ، لكنني الآن لأول مرة أقول ذلك عن تجربة .. إنها تكتب التاريخ فعلاً و يغريني هذا لأخوض تجاربَ أخرى ممتعة . تجارب أخرى مع السلسلة المتبقية ، فابنة الحظ لم تروني بل زادت ظمئي . سعيدة أنا بمَ قرأت ، سعيدة بكُل ما عُشت ، سعيدة سعيدة !

"Filha da Fortuna" é um romance histórico que se centra na personagem de Eliza Sommers, uma jovem chilena que vive em Valparaíso, no ano de 1849, na época em que é descoberto o Ouro na Califórnia. O seu amante, Joaquín Andieta parte em busca desta fortuna e nesse momento Eliza decide segui-lo, disposta a reencontrar o amor da sua vida!

Nesta procura em terra de prostitutas e de homens movidos pelo desejo febril de obter ouro, Eliza acaba por se transformar numa mulher invulgar que fica na nossa memória por muito tempo!!!

This is an interesting historical fiction about a Chilean woman, Eliza Sommers, who comes to San Francisco during the California Gold Rush. She is hunting for her lover, Joaquin Andiata, who left Chile for the gold fields of California.

The book is well written and researched. Allende states she spent seven years researching this book. So many books have people coming from Europe to the California Gold Rush. It was great to read a story where the key people come from South America. Allende is a great storyteller, and I felt I was with Eliza in Chile, on the ship and in California. I could almost hear, smell and see the scenes she described. The ending left me feeling as if the book was not over. Is this book part of a series or trilogy? I noted the book was published in 1998 in Spanish by Plaza & Janes and translated to English in 1999. It was featured as in Oprah’s Book Club in February 2000. I recommend this book.

I read this as an audiobook downloaded from Audible. The book is thirteen hours and nineteen minutes. Blair Brown does a good job narrating the book. Brown is a Tony Award winning actress. Brown also won the Ace Award and was nominated for five Emmy Awards. I wondered if the narration would have been even better if done by a person with a native Chilean/Spanish accent.

It took me a long time to read this book. It was not the number of pages that got to me, but the number of words Allende packs into a page, and the fact that she arranges them all so beautifully you have to be careful not to miss one of them. Her writing is stunning so why only three stars?

I enjoyed the story very much especially the first half when it is set in Chile. Later when the book moves to San Francisco during the Gold Rush, it becomes more of a history of life in those times and very little happens for many pages. Events which could have been tense and exciting lose something from the fact that the author makes it clear very early on what the outcome of the book will be.

There were some excellent characters especially Tao Chi'en. Allende also includes a number of amazing, strong women all remarkable for a period when women usually lived very restricted lives. Then she ruined it by making them lose all sense of logic and reason when they fell in love with totally unsuitable people.

For me then - a good book, beautifully written but I definitely liked The Japanese Lover more!

Written as sort of a prequel to The House of the Spirits, Daughter of Fortune will inevitably be compared to Isabel Allende's first and most famous book, and unfortunately, it doesn't even come close to reaching the bar set by its predecessor.

I was expecting another epic historical family saga, but instead this book is a romance (though at least with a decent twist at the end). I'll definitely read more books by Allende as I consider her to be an incredible author, but this was a disappointment.

This book starts out VERY engaging and remains that way through the first 3/4. Then, very abruptly, it is as if Allende ran out of things to say, or rather, became distracted by another project. The book ends TERRIBLY! The last 1/4 is a slog to get through and, becuase the first part is so wonderful, I kept reading and thinking "surely, this will work out." But no joy. I would suggest reading it BUT don't hope for a great wrap up at the end. It is a lot like drinking a cold bottle of Coke on a hot day - everything starts out all fresh and fizzy and delicious but by the end of the bottle, it is just flat and luke warm.

What do you remember about your first love? Some said that first love last forever, do you agree? First love encouraged Eliza to leave her family, experienced a near-death journey from Valparaiso to the new world, California, chasing Joaquín Andieta's shadow fearlessly. Through the journey she realised that she then has the freedom beyond anything she imagined before, and that was something precious for any woman.

As a female author, Isabel Allende surely has charm in inventing amazing female characters. I met Eva Luna a while ago, now I was honoured to meet Eliza, Paulina, and Rose Sommers. Even Lin and her 'golden lilies' feet was such a strong character that blew fresh air to the story.

What's best in portraying the new world than this amazing story? The gold fever opened new chances for a new beginning, but at what cost? American natives were hunted down like animals, derived from their own land, in the name of greed and certain race supremacy. No laws protecting the immigrants, no matter how hard they're working and contributed to the California's economic stabily, it was nothing because of their skin colours.

I think I have to agree with a friend when he said, nobody wrote, or can write, or will write, like Allende.

تبدأ الرواية بالتعرف على عائلة سوميرز الإنجليزية، التي تركت إنجلترا بعد فضيحة أخلاقية جعلتهم ينتقلون من إنجلترا إلى أقصى غرب أمريكا الجنوبية بمدينة بالبارايسو في تشيلي. تتألف العائلة من جون وجيرمي القبطان ومس روز أختهم، نتعرف عليهم تدريجيًّا ونتعرف على الطفلة الصغيرة التي تُركت على أعتاب منزلهم في ليلة ماطرة لتصبح هذه الطفلة ألزا هي صاحبة المغامرة التي نحن بصددها لنعيش معها مغامراتها ونشأتها من الصفر حتى سنوات المراهقة، ورحلتها في البحث عن الحب من تشيللي إلى كاليفورنيا حيث حمى الذهب التي اجتاحت القارة.

إلزا ابنة الحظ التعسة التي نشأت في طفولة صارمة في محاولة من مس روز أن تجعلها نسخة منها لتزوجها من أحد الرجال الأثرياء، فقط لتحقق ما لم تستطع تحقيقه، ولكن لم تأخذ في حسبانها مشاعر الحب التي لا رقيب عليها فتأتي كالصاعقة على القلب لتزلزل كيانه وتصبح الحياة كلها تتلخص في هذا الشخص، وبما إننا في القرن التاسع عشر حيث النساء في مرحلة متدنية من الحقوق، تصل للاحتقار، فكان حب إلزا خطأً لا يغتفر، حيث حمى الذهب التي جعلت حبيبها يذهب ويتركها وحيدة حتى يعود بالذهب والمال، ظنًّا منه أنهما قد يجلبان له الاحترام فتترك كل شيء خلفها وتذهب وراءه في رحلة محفوفة بالمخاطر وتتعرف على تاو تشين رفيق رحلتها وصديقها الوفي.

تاو تشين لا اجد الكلمات لوصفه حقاً , من افضل الشخصيات الروائية التى قرأتها مطلقاً , رحلته كانت امتع ما فى الرواية , الجزء المتعلق بالصين و الحضارة و ثقافتهم كانت متعة صافية للحظة تمنيت ان تكون الرواية كلها عن رحلته من الصين الى تشيلى ثم الى كاليفورنيا اخيرا برفقة إلزا , لا اجد الكلمات حقاً لذلك ساترك لك رحلته لتكتشفها بنفسك كمان اكتشفتها انا .

اخيراً الرواية متشعبة التفاصيل و الاحداث الكثيرة جدا جدا , رواية تاريخية و بعض شخصياتها حقيقة مزيج ما بين التاريخ و الدراما , لا تدع اول 100 صفحة تخدعك بثقل الرواية او الملل من التفاصيل , الكثيرة لمن هو جديد على قلم ايزابيل الليندى , التفاصيل مهمة احياناً لانهم ترسم لك الخيال لتعيش الشخصيات بالاماكن و الزمان .
