2019 Popsugar Reading Challenge en Español: 18. Un libro que querías leer en 2018

Hace muchos años leí Retrato en Sepia, sin saber de antemano que formaba parte de una trilogía que narraba las vidas de tres mujeres relacionadas entre sí: Eliza Sommers (Hija de la Fortuna), Aurora del Valle (Retrato en Sepia) y Clara del Valle (La Casa de los Espíritus).
Tras leer, por fin, el año pasado La Casa de los Espíritus solamente me quedaba Hija de la Fortuna para completar la trilogía así que no esperé más y me puse manos a la obra.
Me ha parecido una historia apasionante que me enganchó desde el principio, Allende es una excelente narradora y cuenta sus historias de una manera sencilla pero a la vez exquisita haciéndote sentir casi un testigo presencial de sus novelas.
En esta ocasión nos lleva de la mano desde Chile hasta California pasando por China tras las intrépidas y azarosas vidas de los personajes en una época convulsa de la historia de estos pueblos.

رواية ساحرة.. وقدرة مذهلة على الحكي الممتع

For a work that was first published in 1998 Daughter of Fortune strikes me as something more suited to the 1970s. Don't get me wrong, I love Isabel Allende's work and she is one of my favourite authors, however, at the risk of coming across as an oversensitive zillennial, her mystification of China struck me as rather old-fashioned. The way Allende portrays other cultures and groups relies on clichés. Yes, some of these characters were, for the most part, 'harmless' stereotypes, but nonetheless, they did induce an eye-roll or two on my part (for instance, every indigenous woman from Chile is cuvacious and passionate).

As with many other novels by Allende Daughter of Fortune is very heavy on the telling. There are very few, if any, dialogues, which did occasionally distance me from the events Allende narrated. Still, her storytelling, for the most part, kept me engaged in the characters and their stories.
The novel begins in Chile during the 1840s. Eliza Sommers, a Chilean girl and the novel's central character, is adopted by Rose Sommers, an unmarried Briton. Rose lives with her strict older brother and tries to raise Eliza as a 'proper' Victorian lady. Eliza, however, goes on to fall head-over-heels in love with a Chilean man of 'dubious' character. When her beloved is struck by gold fever and leaves for California, a bereft Eliza will risk her own life to be reunited with him.
The story definitely takes its time, and, the first few chapters are less focused on Eliza than a tertiary character, a certain Jacob Todd who travels to Chile after making a bet. He falls for Rose but she clearly does return his affection. We also read about his friends, Feliciano Rodriguez de Santa Cruz and his wife, whose role in the novel feels rather superfluous. During Part I we also learn more about Rose and her brothers and of Eliza's childhood with them.
The remainder of the novel details Eliza's epic journey to find the man she loves. During this time Eliza becomes acquainted with Tao Chi'en, a shanghaied physician who for a time worked as a cook on a ship captained by Rose's other brother, John. Across two lengthy chapters, Allende recounts Tao's life, from his early days to his marriage and, after his wife's death, of his eventual disillusionment. Once in California Eliza and Tao grow closer and it is their bond that truly makes this novel. Allende, quite clearly, shows that Eliza's feelings towards her paramour lead her to idealize this poco di buono man. Yet, her devotion towards him is such that she is willing to spend years of her life in search of him, passing as a young man in order to travel with more freedom.
The novel is certainly full of drama and Allende frequently falls prey to sappy platitudes (about love, destiny, desire, womanhood).
But whereas I could easily overlook Allende's tendency towards the melodramatic, I had a harder time looking past her clichéd portrayal of China, its culture, and people. When the narrative is relating Tao's youth, Allende, quite out of the blue, feels the obligation of using a metaphor involving rice (when describing a Chinese mother's grief: “the little girl’s accident was like the grain of rice that makes the bowl overflow.”). Tao, who is in his thirties, is described looking as sometimes looking like a teenager, and, “ancient as a turtle”, so that “it was easy then to believe that he had lived many centuries”. Whyyyyyy do we have to compare the one Chinese character to a turtle?! And of course, because he is an East Asian man he has to have “delicate ” hands.
Allende includes many other stereotypes about China, and I just have very little patience for this sort of stuff. It didn't help that Allende includes a plethora of clichés (such as prostitutes with hearts of gold, or Eliza 'rescuing' a Native American boy....come on Allende!).
Yes, there were many beautiful descriptions and Allende clearly researched this period of history but I had a hard time getting to like or care for her characters (who are racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, judgemental, anti-abortion). While it made sense, given that the story takes place during the 1840s, it made it difficult for me to actually relate or sympathize with the characters. Eliza was beautiful (in an unconventional way, of course), kind, and clever. The classic heroine. Her love for this guy was definitely of the insta-love variety, and while the narrative does point this out, I struggled to understand what possessed her to follow this guy whose blandness is such that I cannot recollect his name.
I was pleasantly surprised by the fact that the development between Tao and Eliza, and it was refreshing to see a Chinese man be not only one of the main characters but the heroine's love interest. I wish the novel had focused exclusively on them, with less of the 'will they won't they' subplot.
Overall, the novel is kind of cheesy and rather dated. Still, fans of Allende who are less 'sensitive' than I am will probably enjoy this a lot more than I did.

Turiu vieną įprotį ir nesakyčiau, kad geras - vis taupau savo mylimų/mėgstamų autorių knygas, o tokių rašytojų yra ne vienas/ne viena. Isabel Allende yra viena iš jų, o ir pažintis prasidėjo prieš kokius 7 metus nuo kūrinio "Dvasių namai". Pačiai tai buvo kažkas nepaprasto ir iškart pakerėjo. Po ilgos pertraukos grįžtu prie Isabel kūrybos ir jos trilogijos - "Fortūnos duktė" yra tęsinys "Dvasių namų".

Allende iki šio kūrinio dar nebuvo nei karto apvylusi, o ir šis nebuvo išimtis❤️ Nuo pat pirmųjų puslapių reikėjo priprasti prie ilgų pastraipų, o ir dialogų buvo visai nedaug. Po truputį pripratau, o rašytoja tokia nuostabi pasakotoja, kad vis norėjosi sužinoti, kas vyks toliau pagrindiniams veikėjams, kuria linkme pasisuks įvykiai. Tai pasakojimas ne tik apie Rozą ir Džoną Somersus, Elizą..., bet ir emigrantų gyvenimą, kurių daugumą sužavėjo mintis pralobti ieškant aukso ar dėl geresnio gyvenimo ir taip atsidūrė Amerikoje. Istorija nuostabi, nors skaitėsi iš lėto, bet kai geras kūrinys - juo ir mėgautis norisi ilgiau.

This is the third book in the last few months that I wish never ended. The other two were by Ann Patchett. The difference is that Isabel Allende's, "Daughter Of Fortune," has a sequel that I have already ordered.

"Daughter Of Fortune," is top heavy with fantastic characters and as anyone who knows me knows, I am a firm believer that characters are what drive a story, and there are many stories in this amazing book, each driven by unforgettable characters.

It takes place on three continents, Europe, North and South America, but the bulk of the book takes place in northern Ca. before, during, and after the gold rush and Ms. Allende's portrayal of the American west of the 1850's is a disturbing, but truthful, rendition of how it really was back then just after America took control of California, Az., Oregon, and Texas from Mexico and from the indigenous Indians. The bigotry and racism against Mexicans, Hispanics in general, the Indians, Chinese, and anyone not completely 'white' is appalling and a disturbing look into present day America.

The heroine of this story is Eliza Sommers, an orphan baby left in the garden of the Sommers' estate, and raised as a rich and guarded child in the British colony of Valparaiso, Chile. She meets and falls in love with Joaquin Andieta, a lower class clerk who by the social standards of the country is not suitable for Eliza.

Joaquin, with the promise of coming back, sails to California in search of gold and without him knowing it leaves behind a pregnant Eliza. Eliza, after a few months, leaves behind everything and sails to California as a stowaway in search of her first love.

It is during her search that the sixteen year old Eliza, who has a miscarriage on the ship, transforms herself from a beautiful, privilege, child in Chile into a person of unbelievable courage, intelligence, and compassion and it is mainly through her eyes that all the other stories are told.

This is a great novel!!!!!!! And Eliza is a character for the ages!!!!

لا أعرف كيف أصف مشاعر دهشتي من روعة هذا العمل المتكامل بنيانه الأدبي بشكل ساحر ! ما هذا السرد البديع ؟ و الدقة التاريخية و الوصف المنمق الرائع !
إيزابيل احتلت قلبي بعنفوان قلمها و صدق شخصياتها و التي نسيت أنها مجرد شخصيات روائية ! تعلّقت بهم جميعًا بشدة و أصبحت انتظر موعد القراءة و خاصةً إليثا و تاو شيين ... غصتُ في أعماق الحياة اللاتينية و تعلّقت بكل الأحداث و لم املّ للحظة .. في لحظة بدت ايزابيل أكثر قربًا لقلبي من كل الكتّاب الذين قرأت لهم!
الغريب في الأمر أن تلك الرواية لمست فيّ وترًا حساسًّا للغاية... كنت مثل إليثا .. أبحث عن شئ و لكن القدر أو ما اسمته ايزابيل في عملها ب " الحظ" .. رسم لي شيئًا آخرَ غيرّني تمامًا ! ..
رواية أغرقتني في كثيرٍٍ من المشاعر العذبة التي تجعلني أرغب بشدة في إقتناء باقي أجزاء الثلاثية ... الرواية الاولى التي تجعلني عند إنتهائها أشعر و كأن صديقةً غالية على قلبي بل جزء من روحي ... هجرني و سأفتقد الاحداث و الشخصيات بشدة ..سأكتب بإسهاب أكثر إن شاء الله عند إنتهائي من كل الأجزاء.

Posvojena u englesku emigrantsku obitelj, djevojčica Eliza odrastala je u Čileu, u gradiću Valparaiso. Uzorna obitelj, s kapetanom u obitelji bila je dio visokog društva, koliko je tada i tamo to bilo moguće. Doba zlatne groznice upoznajemo nakon što glavna protagonistica pođe u potragu za svojim ljubavnikom Joaquimom koji odlazi u Kaliforniju. Život joj se mijenja iz temelja, prepuštena je samo sebi sa svojih šesnaest godina u nepoznatom svijetu. Odjevena u muškarca kako bi mogla neprimjetno putovati, upoznaje šarolike likove i njihove sudbine.

في رحلة بحثٍ عن "العلم والحكمة" من جهة و"حبٍ ضائع" من جهة أخرى تأخذنا ايزابيل الليندي في روايتها الملحمية .
" يبدو أننا جميعاً جئنا نبحثُ عن شيء ووجدنا شيئاً آخر " .

بين تشيلي والصين وكاليفورنيا تخلق عوالم بشكلٍ متقن ، مروراً بأحداث كبرى مثل حرب الأفيون وحمى الذهب ..
مرافقين الزا بطلة الرواية منذ طفولتها ، وسعيها نحو المغامرة ونحو أحلامها وبكل عنفوانها وعنادها وعيوبها .
الشخصيات النسائية سأكتفي بأن أقول عنها : أنها استثنائية ، الزا ، باولينا، وروز .
تكمن قوة الرواية في قوة قَصها وشخوصها ،روائحها مع كل تلك الأمكنة التي دارت بها ..والخيوط الصغيرة المتلاحمة وتلكَ التفاصيل التي شَكَلتْ أهم ما مر بـ شخوصها ..
حتى النهاية المفتوحة أشعرتني بالبهجة .. بإختصار هي ممتعة وفريدة .

هذه الرواية هي إحدى تلكَ الأعمال "الشديدة الندرة " والتي ما أن أنهيها أقول محدثةً نفسي : يوماً ما سأعيد قراءتها ـ ويومَ أُعيد قراءتها سأقرؤها بترجمة صالح علماني .

" قلت لك إن العناد شر قويٌ جدا : يمسك بالدماغ و يُمزق القلب،هناك أنواع كثيرة من العناد. لكن أسوأها هو عناد الحب.
أسوأ عناد بعد الحب هو عناد الذهب " .
اطلقت الماتشي حُكمها

هذه القطعة الفنية صاغتها أنامل سيدة تجيد حياكة الصوف جيدا.
ف حياكة الصوف تتميز بالجمال و الصبر و خشونة الخيوط و تَشابكها لكي تعطي صورة كاملة.

قرأت الرواية بترجمة (رفعت عطفة)، وكانت من الروعة حيث أني لا أصدق أن بإمكانها أن تصير أروع بترجمة (صالح علماني) كما زعم لي البعض.

تقع أحداث الرواية في حقبة تاريخية مهمة في القرن التاسع عشر، متنقلة بين أمريكا وتشيلي والصين، حيث تندلع حمى الذهب المكتشف في كاليفورنيا، ويترك الطامعين والمدقعين أوطانهم متوافدين على أرض الثروة والأحلام.

البطلة (إليثا) تعيش بين أربعة جدران ف�� بيت آل سومرز، ترعرعت في حصن الآداب المنيع، محدودة بالمشد والرتابة والقواعد الاجتماعية، والخوف من الخروج من حماية البيت ومن هشاشتها الأنثوية ذاتها. لكن الحب في عينيها برر كل شىء؛ سلمت نفسها لـ (خواكين أنديتا) الذى جرفته حمى الذهب فغادر تشيلي، ومن ثم هربت من أسرتها لتلحق به، لتصبح عبدته للأبد. انتحلت شخصية فتى تشيلي، لباسه منحها حرية غير معهودة، لم تشعر بنفسها خفية قط قبل ذلك، دخل النسيم في كمي قميصها وفتحتي بنطلونها وراحت هى المعتادة على ضغط الملابس الداخلية تتنفس الآن ملء رئتيها! وما عادت قادرة على التخلي عن أجنحتها الجديدة التى بدأت تنمو على كتفيها، عرفت أنها إذا كانت قد ارتكبت أخطاء فقد دفعت الثمن غاليًا بخسارتها لأسرتها وابنها الميت، بعذابها مقبورة فى عنبر السفينة التى حملتها لكاليفورنيا حيث مستقبلها مضطرب، وفي خضم رحلتها المثيرة انتبهت أنها فقدت الخوف من الخوف، ذاب خوفها في عظمة تلك الأرض الضاغطة، أضاعت الشخص الذي كانته، عثرت على قوى جديدة كانت موجودة دائمًا لكنها لم تحتج لاستخدامها حتى تدري بامتلاكها لها.

قد يكون إطار الرواية: تخفي فتاة في زى رجل لغرضٍ ما (تقليديًا)، لكن لدينا على الجانب الآخر: فترة مهمة تلك التى تؤرخها الكاتبة، السرد قوي وشيق وصادق، يصل إليك بمنتهى البساطة. حبكة الرواية مبهرة بالمنطق الذي اتبعته في زمن الأحداث وخط سيرها وتطورات الشخصيات. راقني كثيرًا الزخم في الرواية دون أن يشتت القارىء أو يستكثره أو يمل منه. على الإطلاق، تصل لآخر صفحة في الرواية لتجد نفسك متشوق ومتململ فى آن.. لأنها انتهت! ولازلت تريد أن تعرف أكثر وألا تطوي الرواية بهذه السرعة. وهنا يكمن الحظ بحق؛ حيث أن إيزابيل جعبتها لم تفرغ بعد: فـ (ابنة الحظ) جزء أول من ثلاثية روائية.

آلمتني إيزابيل بالوحشية التى رصدتها: الطمع، العنصرية، الاضطهاد، العبودية، الفحشاء، الفقر.. ولك أن تقرأ مثلًا جملة حوارية وردت على لسان غانية (في كسب عيشها) لتلعن الجنس البشري:
- هذا ليس سيئًا جدًا، أغمض عينيّ ولا أفكر في شىء. إنها دقائق قليلة وتمضي سريعة.

الرواية لن تفلح محاولة تلخيصها أو حتى تسجيل كامل ملاحظاتي عليها، فشخصية مثلًا كـ (تاو شيين) المعالِج الصيني يطول الحكي عنها. ناهيك عن الآنسة روز وأخويها (أسرة أليثا بالتبني) والصحفي جاكوب تود وغيرهم وغيرهم.

أما والسطر الذي توقفت عنده إيزابيل عن الحكي، فقد بلغت به من الذكاء مبلغه:
- أصبحت حرة. أجابته دون أن تفلت يده.

بعد ما خلصت الكتاب ده حسيت بموجة سعادة ضخمة وكل الحب لروح صالح علماني اللي كان سبب في نقل الأدب العظيم بالصورة الشيك دي من كل قلبي بشكره وبشكر اختي طبعا عشان الكتاب ده ترشيحها

هل تتحكم "أمزجتنا" في حكمنا على كتاب معين؟! .. هل القراءة تحتاج لطقوس معينة "شخصية" على كل شخص أن يُقدسها وعندما لا تتوفر عليه أن لا يقترب من أي كتاب؟! .. .. بعد قراءتي لهذه الرواية الإجابة هي "نعم" .. .. "ابنة الحظ" قرأت منها سابقاً 10 صفحات تقريباً ولم أستطع أبداً الاستمرار، والحمد لله أني أجلتها فقط ولم أحكم عليها بالإعدام، هذه المرة من الصفحة الأولى كأنني أقرأ شيء آخر ليس له علاقة بالعشر الصفحات السابقة .. .. يبدو أنني يجب أن أستأنف في حكمي على العديد من الكتب التي حكمت عليها بالإعدام

حمى الذهب في سان فرانسيسكو سنة 1848 كان نقطة التحول في الرواية والبداية الفعلية لها (رغم أن تسلسل الأحداث بدأ من سنة 1843) فهذه المنطقة كانت كالمغناطيس، جذبت الناس من جميع البقاع: أمريكا اللاتينية ،أوروبا، الصين .. .. وكان الذهب الهاجس والمحرك لهذه الهجرة فكل شخص وجدها أرض الفرص والبدايات الجديدة ونسيان الماضي .. .. امتزجت الأعراق واللغات والعادات المختلفة ونتجت الصراعات السياسية، الاقتصادية والاجتماعية ، تطورت المدينة والبنيان و القوانين ورغم انتهاء حمى الذهب لكن المدينة بقت واستمرت وازدهرت بسبب إمكانيات وموارد أخرى ساهم الذهب في اكتشافها بطريقة غير مباشرة .. .. .. رغم أنها تبدو أحداث و حقائق جافة "فإيزابيل الليندي" أضافت الطابع الإنساني لهذه الأحداث وصاغتها لنا في رواية رائعة تصف فعلاً معنى كلمة "الواقعية السحرية" التي اتصفت بها روايات إيزابيل الليندي

تملكتني "روائح" الرواية، فلكل رواية عنوان و الرواية عنوانها " الروائح" كيف لا والشخصية الرئيسية إليثا التي تصف أنفها "بأنف الكلب" كل شخص، مكان، حدث وذكرى تُصنِّفه وتُعرِّفه لنفسها بالرائحة .. .. إليثا خرجت تبحث عن حبيبها، تاو شيين خرج يبحث عن العلم والحكمة تقاطعت بهم الطرق وتوالت الأحداث و وجدا السلام في شيء آخر .. .. .. "اقتباس":- يبدو أننا جميعاً جئنا نبحث عن شيء ووجدنا شيئاً آخر

أول قراءة لإيزابيل الليندي وبالتأكيد لن تكون الأخيرة
