This is one perfect example that sometimes, I don't have to find books. Books find me. I didn't know what to do with my bonus last time so I was scavenging Booksale for some good reads. I found this cheap book (60 pesos) containing two books by Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt. The cover is from the movie based on the book and there's a picture of a handsome kid who played the main character (which attracted me somehow). I bought it and began reading the first book --- Monsiuer Ibrahim and the Flowers of the Koran (Monsieur Ibrahim et les Fleurs du Coran).

Trust me, I was in my uncle's wedding and I wasn't paying attention. I was reading the book and I couldn't stop. And too bad it's only 52 pages. But damn, it's 52 pages of life and wisdom and everything that I thirst for. I finished the book after we ate at the reception.

The book tells the story of a boy named Moses who is hungry for love. He's a typical disturbed kid living in 1960s Paris with his father not paying him much attention. So he tries to seek love from the whores and did petty crimes like shoplifting from the known Arab in the neighborhood, Monsieur Ibrahim.

Circumstances led to an unusual friendship between Moses and Monsieur Ibrahim. Moses, or Momo, learned much from the old man who bases his outlook in life from his Koran. The good parts of the book were the conversations of the two which I found very intellectual, philosophical, enlightening. Momo learns that there's more to life than whores and shoplifting. Momo learns that we don't smile because we're happy but rather we are happy because we smile. Momo learns to respect other religion, to value the love he has for others, and to protect his pair of feet over his shoes.

Eventually, Momo's father dies in the climax of the story. Momo's long lost mother appears and gawd, there conversations crushed my heart. In the end, Monsieur Ibrahim adopts Momo and together they travel across Europe into Asia where Monsieur Ibrahim was born.

I honestly can't believe how Schmitt did it, writing a story so short but so complete, so detailed, so complex. My reading experience reminded me of reading The Alchemist and the books of Mitch Albom. I heart.

إريك شميت .. اللي حبيته في "أوسكار والسيدة وردية" بيقدِّم لي رواية تانية مختلفة خالص، تخليني ببساطة، أكرهه ..
بعد ما قريت الرواية القصيرة أيضًا بصيت على المقدمة العظيمة اللي كاتبها سلماوي، يمكن ألاقي فيها حاجة مختلفة ..
لاقيت نفسي بقول لاااا يا راجل ؟!!!
هوا ده بقى التقريب بين الأديان المزعوم ؟؟
وبعدين أنا نفسي أفهم حاجة فييين القرآن ولا زهور القرآن ف "أم" الرواية؟!!
...
دي محاولة فاشلة جدًا
عشان يقولوا إن المسلمين واليهود ممكن يتعايشوا مع بعض مثلاً ؟
..
لم أقتنع بالبطل اليهودي الطفل الصغير، ولا بالرجل الكبير "إبراهيم" .. ملاقيتوش غير إبراهيم يعني يا بعداا ... الذي زعم أنه صوفي ... حلاوتك !

دلم میخواد دوباره شبی یه نمایشنامه بخونم :(

Ben bu kitabın filmini zamanında izlemiş ve çok sevmiştim, ancak üstünden 20 yıl kadar bir zaman geçtiği için unuttum tabii, kitabını görünce okuyup hatırlayayım dedim. Valla yanılmıyorsam filmi kitabından daha iyi olan nadir eserlerden biri bu. Kitap kötü mü, değil asla ama bilinçli bir şekilde derinleşmekten kaçıyor gibi; çok saçma.

Bazı açılardan Emile Ajar'ın çok sevdiğim kitabı Onca Yoksulluk Varken'e benziyor Mösyö İbrahim ve Kuran’ın Çiçekleri - bir çocuğun kenar mahallede büyüme hikayesini anlatmaları, hele de her iki kitapta da çocukların isminin Momo olması herhalde bu benzerlik duygusunu kuvvetlendiriyor. Ama işte Onca Yoksulluk Varken ne kadar katmanlı ve derinse, bu da o kadar tek boyutlu, üstelik de bilinçli bir tercih gibi bu, tuhaf.

Çocuğun dilinden yazıldığı için dil çok naif, yumuşak ve tatlı. Bebekken annesi tarafından terk edilen ve asık suratlı babasıyla hayatta kalmaya çalışan Momo, mahallenin "Arap" bakkalı Mösyö İbrahim ile bir dostluk geliştiriyor ve hayatı değişiyor. Bu ikilinin ilişkisi, Mösyö İbrahim'in doğal bilgeliği, hayata yaklaşma biçimi de gayet güzel anlatılmış, ancak neden, neden, neden bu kadar kısa? Bir cümle bir cümle her şey, oysaki ne hikayeler var bu kitapta, nasıl güzel açılıp boyut kazanabilirmiş bu metin, bu lezzetli hikaye uzun uzun anlatılabilir, ikilinin birbirlerinden hayata dair öğrendikleri şeylerle nasıl zenginleştirilebilirmiş. Filmi belki de bunu becerdiği için sevmiştim, bu öyküye hak ettiği katmanı katabilmişti sanki.

Neyse, sonuçta tatlı, insanı gülümseten, naif, hoş bir kitap kendisi. Keşke daha çok emek verseymiş yazar, güzelim hikayesine haksızlık etmiş kanımca.
