One of my favorite writers is Harold Brodkey. His observations were either all true, or said with such certainty that you want to believe them. He understood the soul. He understood grief, sorrow, happiness, jadedness, resentment, existentialism, psychoanalysis, hate. He understood love, maybe.
Most of all, he understood the importance of memory, and how to recall it.
The first four stories in this collection are as good as any. Each had moments that moved me to tears.
The last five stories prove his ability to write domestic/city life conflicts on the level of Cheever, Yates, Salinger. They were his toll to move into the more experimental forms on display in his next collection.
I’d recommend this collection to anyone who wants to see where the genius that produced Stories in an Almost Classical Mode began. Really, I’d recommend this collection to anyone.
