Romanzo storico molto interessante sull'occupazione del Cile da parte dei conquistadores spagnoli nel '500. Più precisamente, romanzo storico incentrato sulla figura di Ines de Suarez, giovane donna che lasciò la Spagna in cerca di miglior vita e si ritrovò ad accompagnare attivamente Pedro de Valdivia nel suo sogno di conquista del Cile.
Con la prosa suggestiva e intrigante che le è propria, l'autrice descrive un paese che conosce molto bene e racconta una storia avventurosa e drammatica, in cui l'istinto di sopravvivenza convive con la durezza di un paese estremo e sconosciuto, il fascino della scoperta con le atrocità commesse dagli invasori.

the line between fiction and non-fiction is too blurred on this one. it kind reads like a historical book told in the first person, which left me a bit disappointed. expected a bit more about Inés life and struggles, and a little less about the taking of other people's rightful land. but I'm not going to rant about colonialism here. anyway, Inés was an absolute icon, so ahead of her time. she's the most interesting thing about this book, in all honesty.

not that impressed with my first Allende book but I'll give her work another chance

Unfortunately, couldn't get into it. Read the first half and decided to call it quits. I just can't feel compassion for conquistadors; I keep rooting for them all to die and leave the natives alone.

This book has stayed with me for years! An interesting story about a Spanish woman in Chile during the time of the conquistadors. Made me want to try some of the foods she makes - minus the grasshoppers!

Colonization is such an innocuous sounding word, but the reality is just the opposite. It is the audacity of a powerful country to invade another land and annihilate the indigenous population. Often with the pretense of living together harmoniously, the native population is killed in battle, enslaved, or dies from diseases for which they have no immunity. Is there another way?

The colonization of Chile was no different. In the name of Christianity, the Spaniards 'conquered' this land of great beauty. Allende tells this historically based, epic story through the words of Ines S. Suarez, a courageous and ingenious woman of the 16th century. Ines recalls her life to her daughter as she is nearing death: her difficult early years in Spain, her search for her first husband in Peru and Chile, and her years of toil, battle, friendships and loves in the early days of Santiago.

Allende's writing evokes such a strong sense of time and place. It was often hard to remember that Ines' voice was actually that of the author. I felt Ines' perils to my core. It has been a long time since I have felt such empathy for a character, such an involvement in the story. And yet - the brutality, the vividly graphic battle scenes were sickening. Should the horrors of war be gentrified for the comfort of the reader? Can we judge the actions of those seeking new lands and those trying to defend their land? Would that judgment be a form of 'Monday morning quarterback' syndrome? As difficult to read as some scenes were, I believe the truth can't be watered down. I don't know if there is a more humane way for expansion, but I have thought intensely about it and will continue to ponder this.

I finished this intensely moving book at least a week ago. I am still immersed in the narrative, and my description of its impact on me feels inadequate. It did to me what great literature should do; it grabbed me, challenged me and changed me. I highly recommend this beautifully told story. Isabelle Allende is a remarkable writer.

La mágica prosa de Isabel Allende al servicio del recuerdo y la reivindicación de la memoria de Inés Suárez, conquistadora de Chile y fundadora de la actual capital chilena, junto a Juan Valdivia, que, naturalmente y siguiendo los cánones de una historiografía atiborrada de testosterona y con tendencia falocéntrica, es tan recordado como condenada al ostracismo colectivo está la figura de su compañera femenina.

Libro que entretiene y, ante todo, ilustra didáctica y lúdicamente uno de los capítulos de la compleja, portentosa y extensa Conquista de América por el Imperio Español. Es cierto, no obstante, que "Inés del alma mía" es una obra que está lejos de la excelsitud de "La Casa de los Espíritus", ya que, a mi parecer, la forma narrativa elegida por Allende para la historia de Inés Suárez resta épica y emoción para aquellos que como un servidor no conocíamos el destino de los personajes históricos citados.

Al margen de ello, obra notable y de lectura agradable. Unas 3,5 estrellas según mis parámetros.

Tot încerc romane de la Allende în speranța că poate voi înțelege din ce cauză s-a iscat isteria asta în jurul numelui ei sau măcar să reuşesc să rezonez cu stilul. Nici de data asta n-am găsit calea. Scrierea ei nu-mi inspira nici un fel de emoție. Singurul lucru bun pe care trebuie să-l recunosc e că e documentată, că ține cont de detaliile istorice şi afli multe lucruri de care n-ai fi auzit niciodată, dar scrie exact ca un istoric: detaşat, rece, foarte detaliat şi în viteză. Cel puțin în romanul acesta şi-a motivat viteza cu frica că-i moare personajul în mijlocul autobiografiei.
N-am auzit de Inés Suarez până la cartea asta, dar m-am documentat pe ici pe colo, şi, deşi e genul de femeie pe care aş admira-o, cartea n-a reuşit să mi-o apropie, şi ar fi avut toate atuurile să fie floare la ureche.

Inés a făcut istorie, s-a născut într-o lume dominată de bărbați, dar marea ei calitate a fost că acest lucru n-a speriat-o, n-a oprit-o, ci din contră. Pare că a impulsionat-o să dovedească că femeia nu e bună doar pentru a turna copii. Inés s-a născut într-o vreme în care femeia n-avea nici un cuvânt de spus. Era supusă întâi unui tată, apoi unui soț şi, la sfârşit, trăia la mâna copiilor. Ea a preferat să renunțe la toți pe rând. Şi la tată şi la soț, şi, obligată de soartă, şi la copii, în schimb, a făcut ceea ce nu-şi permitea mai nicio femeie în acele timpuri: s-a făcut auzită, temută şi respectată, dar, mai ales, a sfidat legile nescrise ale vremii.

Evenimentele istorice sunt bine documentate şi reprezintă marele plus al cărții. Detaliile colonizării sunt atroce, sângeroase şi crude, şi de o parte şi de cealaltă. Ambele tabere s-au întrecut în fapte abominabile şi greu de imaginat.

Conchistadorii sunt lipsiți de ruşine şi de umanitate: ajung ca nişte cerşetori, se poartă ca nişte hoţi şi se cred mari seniori. Aurul visat le întunecă mințile. Din partea lor, fiind tabăra ce se pretinde a fi civilizată, te aşteptai la mai multă rațiune şi simțire, în timp ce la indieni, fiind cei sălbatici şi amenințați cu extincția, îți vine să înțelegi mai uşor pornirile sadice.

Me encanto esta novela histórica, no la podía soltar al final , aprendí mucho sobre la conquista de Chile , y las cinco estrellas es por la manera tan fina de escribir de Isabel Allende

Bellissima storia di una donna praticamente sconosciuta ai più, fino alla fine del libro ho pensato fosse fortemente romanzata. Una donna che non si rassegna al suo ruolo di vedova "bianca", anzi approfittando delle leggi che consentivano alle mogli di ricongiungersi ai mariti parte per le Americhe, lottando con forza ed intelligenza per conquistare il suo posto nel mondo. Di questo libro non resta solo questa bellissima figura di donna ma anche la consapevolezza della cosciente distruzione di intere civiltà, di popoli pacifici, la cui cultura probabilmente è stata persa per sempre, crudeltà inutili, massacri, con la sola giustificazione del desiderio di conquista e della brama d'oro.

Inés de Suárez es de las pocas mujeres que lograron dejar su marca en la historia de Chile, aunque detrás de la sombra de muchos hombres célebres, como Pedro de Valdivia. Por eso, encuentro muy interesante este libro, que cuenta la historia y la vida de Inés, mujer española que se convirtió en conquistadora y gobernadora de Chile. Por supuesto, también abarca una buena parte de la vida de Pedro de Valdivia, quien aparentemente fue el amante de Inés durante varios años, y de otros personajes de la historia de Chile, principalmente españoles (aunque también menciona a algunos yanaconas y mapuches).
Debo decir que la historia del descubrimiento y posterior conquista de Chile nunca me ha producido demasiado interés. Se trata de un período que, nos guste o no, fue muy sangriento, tanto para españoles como mapuche. A mis 24 años, me doy cuenta de la grandiosa tarea que realizaron los conquistadores, no sólo al atravesar el desierto más árido del mundo, sino también al enfrentar a miles de mapuche, que los superaban en número de una manera inquietante. Es impresionante el temple que tenía Pedro de Valdivia, Inés de Suárez y el resto de los españoles que los acompañaban (me recuerda un poco a la triste historia del Puerto del Hambre, en Magallanes).
Los mapuche también son descritos con esa determinación, en que es mejor la muerte que aceptar la presencia de los españoles. También ellos cuentan con genios militares, especialmente Lautaro, cuyas hazañas se describen brevemente en este libro.

Hace varios años que no leía a Isabel Allende (a quien considero una de las mejores escritoras chilenas), porque me llevé un gran desencanto cuando leí El cuaderno de Maya. Por eso, aunque compré este libro hace bastante tiempo, sólo me decidí a leerlo hace un par de días. La escritura de Isabel Allende se luce realmente en Inés del alma mía, especialmente en esas descripciones de los paisajes de Chile, que hace que te sientas en ese preciso lugar, hace quinientos años, cuando Santiago no era más que un caserío, en lugar de la enorme ciudad que es hoy. Sin embargo, debo confesar que a veces se me hacían eternos sus largos párrafos, especialmente porque la edición que tengo tiene la letra tan chica que debería ser ilegal.

Muy recomendable a los amantes de la historia, especialmente a la importancia de las mujeres en una época tan masculina como Chile en el siglo XVI.
