The Horn of the Unicorn

From the author of our tremendously popular The Mouth of the Lion (the life of heroic Bishop Antonio de Castro Mayer) comes this new - and different - biography of Archbishop Lefebvre. Make no mistake, this biography is unlike ANY you have read before. It is a mosaic, if you will, providing parenthetical glimpses and historical soundbites of the life of Marcel Lefebvre. Each tid-bit (sometimes one to a page, sometimes five to a page) offers a new and fascinating insight. A truly unique style of writing. It is perfectly suited to those who want the convenience of picking up the book and reading for one minute OR one hour. Pick it up. Put it down. On your time. Although not a definitive and exhaustive biography like Bishop Tissier de Mallerais's Marcel Lefebvre, The Horn of the Unicorn deftly weaves poetry, Scripture, anecdotes, news, and history into the story of the life of Archbishop Lefebvre. The result is an inspiring and thought-provoking appreciation of his life from one of America's most distinguished Catholic writers. But, you're asking, "I read Bishop Tissier's bio. Why should I read this one?" Because it invites the reader to reflect on the life of Archbishop Lefebvre in a new and different way. Like a motion picture on paper, Dr. White associates thoughts, images, notions, quotations in such a way that an understanding of the Archbishop and his times emerges.

“Doc” White, as he is affectionately called by most who know him, was born in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, in 1948, and was received into the Catholic Church in 1979.
He received his B.A. from the University of Minnesota in 1970, and his M.A. from the University of Wisconsin a year later. In 1981 he earned his Ph.D. in English Literature from Indiana University, where he also taught before moving on to the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire. He then taught at Temple University, and later served – for 29 years – in the English Department at the United States Naval Academy, where he remains Professor Emeritus of English.
He is the editor of the Shakespeare encyclopedia Shakespeare A to Z and is the author of The Mouth of the Lion and The Horn of the Unicorn. Though technically retired, he is currently writing a biography of Bishop Richard Williamson.
Dr. White, on behalf of and in conjunction with His Excellency Bishop Williamson, acts as the "public face" of the St. Marcel Initiative, handling much of its official correspondence and bearing responsibility for the release, as approved by the Bishop, of news and announcements regarding His Excellency's activities.

A fascinating book about the rise, fall, and rise again of Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre of the SSPX. A traditionalist through-and-through, Msgr. Lefebvre was a man of his convinctions, even enough to stand up to the Pope. A remarkable book that darts in and out of time to weave together a compelling story of this great man's life.

Heartbreaking ...

Why? My in-depth answer is in a long review with quotes here: http://corjesusacratissimum.org/2011/...

But the short answer is that this is a work of art poignantly depicting the tragedy of Vatican II and the courage and clarity of Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre.

But as I say in my review, this book may reduce you to tears ... if you care about the fate of the Church.

This book is excellent!

As someone who has read both The Little Story of My Long Life (the story of the Archbishop told by himself) as well as the biography of Archbishop Lefebvre that is written by His Excellency Bishop Tissier de Mallerais, I learnt so much about the dear Archbishop's life, but not in such a way that anything was terribly repeated from the other biographies.

It is beautifully written and has given me so much extra context to all that I already know about the Archbishop. This is no wonder, since this author has clearly done meticulous research, with him gathering quotes and stories from more than fourteen books written by or about Archbishop Lefebvre.

Archbishop Lefebvre, Madame Lefebvre and Mother Marie Gabriel, pray for us!
