M'a semblé plus inégal que "L'Errant", que je terminais en commençant celui-ci.
Mes contes préférés : "Le Roi-hermite", "Savoir et impéritie", "L'érudit et le poète". Les poèmes : "Du plus profond de mon coeur" et "Par-delà ma solitude". Je reste fasciné par la très courte et densément symbolique parabole "Tyrannie" à laquelle il me faut réfléchir davantage.

The Forerunner is another collection of Kahlil Gibran's parables and poems. His sense of morality exists outside of any established religion. His religion is one of compassion for others, speaking truth to power, standing up for the downtrodden against the powerful, and generally opposing the evil and the hypocrisy of the world. What religion does that? So often in Gibran's world the Church is the main cause of evil and hypocrisy in the world. The Church, in fact, is a part of the problem. The hearts of Man is the main cause of all that's wrong in the world, but the Church should be showing a better way rather than representing all that is wrong in the world.

Many of the tales were average. But several stood out to me as funnier or more wonderful or deeper than the others. These are my favorites deserving of 4 or 5 stars:

* God's Fool
* The Saint
* Critics
* Poets
* The King of Aradus
* 'Said a Sheet of Snow-white Paper...'
* The Last Watch

But due to the overwhelming majority of the stories being simply okay, I cannot bring myself to rate this collection too high.

I suppose most of us read this ... perhaps in our college days? I am not sure when ... Anyway, it is a very good thing to continue to savor poetry in our lives.

The Forerunner is a better collection than its predecessor, though it remains largely uneventful. It escapes the edgy tone of the first collection and better expresses its humor or profundities, though either of these come quite rarely. The highs are somewhat higher, though it is no great collection of literature.
