un giorno qualunque per motivi imprecisati i Pirenei si spaccano e quella che prima era la penisola iberica diviene presto un'isola e di colpo si mette a navigare nell'oceano Atlantico
alcune persone si scoprono in grado di fare cose o avvertire eventi e casualmente si mettono a viaggiare per andare a vedere l'oceano dalla parte delle montagne, dove prima non c'era e adesso pare ci sarà da ora in poi...un cane indica la strada e le donne restano tutte insieme misteriosamente gravide...

e Saramago fa di nuovo quella cosa che fa lui, quella magia per cui anche se stai leggendo una cosa palesemente surreale sei lì che non vedi l'ora di sapere come andrà a finire, anche se sai che non finirà, perchè raramente lui ci mette una fine, mangi ogni singola pagina fino a inoltrarti completamente nelle parole che compongono quest'unico atto d'amore nei confronti della terra e del retaggio storico che nessuno è mai autorizzato a lasciare indietro, almeno non in un racconto di Saramago

I don’t quite know why it has taken me so long to get to this writer. This book has been on my shelf for more than two decades. It is one of those novels a reader regrets having finished. I now wish to read some of this author’s other works.
Much of the attraction is Saramago’s distinctive, discursive style, which derives from his decision to restrict his punctuation to commas and full-stops – no dashes or exclamation marks! In respecting this conceit, the translator allows English-speaking readers to experience the timbre and resonance of the writer’s oral flow. It is a style that gives Saramago room and opportunity to discuss anything, including his own writing, and there are numerous asides concerning matters usually considered extraneous to the plot.
The multi-layered plot is in fact a gossamer woven out of thin air. Without drifting into what may be considered “magic realism”, Saramago has no problem using plainly impossible circumstances as the basis of his story. The Iberian peninsula breaks away from Europe and drifts off into the Atlantic, and the main characters possess varying degrees of supra-human powers, but all this is more or less mere background information to the tales of their travels, loves and adventures. The social changes they witness are also related in a naturalist manner, unfurling a healthy and entertaining level of satire concerning contemporary social attitudes.
Although a little ashamed at having neglected this writer, I am also delighted (at my age) to find such rare and precious works are there to be yet discovered.

A 300 page ramble worthy of Grandpa Simpson. I tapped out about 25% of the way in. There might be some kind of point or meaning buried in this book, but I couldn't be bothered to find it.

A jangada de Pedra é uma imponente narrativa utópica, sobre uma ideia que meandra pelos reinos da política e filosofia.

Repleta de vivacidade linguística e incríveis personagens,esta é a história deste grupo de pessoas ao longo da sua viagem pelos recantos da península que navega pelo mar há muito descontinuada do resto da Europa.
Ora esta ideia, a da separação da península é surreal e não é inteiramente possivel, não como Saramago a relata. Mas o leitor atento e inteligente entenderá que a metáfora é inerente à ideia. Trata-se de uma crítica politica. O livro foi escrito na altura em que Portugal e Espanha aderiram à UE, antiga CEE. Queria o autor criticar este acontecimento? Após a leitura cheguei a conclusões concretas.

Mas o livro revela um propósito maior, para além de todas as críticas que o autor faz subtilmente. É acerca d condição humana, acima de tudo.

Bom, mas não o melhor de José Saramago.

I struggled to adjust to Saramago’s style at first. There were many moments when punctuation would have helped, but then there were other moments when the seemingly endless commas achieve a palpable, discursive tempo. Halfway through I still felt it was eccentricity for the sake of it, but looking back again now I do feel Saramago truly captured a different way of reading- making that narrative voice in one’s head SAY rather than HEAR. It will now take me a while to snap out of Saramago’s rhythm!

I love the plot of the Stone Raft. I love how it so elegantly flips from apocalyptic global politics to mundane life. I love how the six characters (dog included) and the narrator effortlessly switch from big philosophies to happily chilling, flexing their minds and stretching their legs down the page. I feel a real affinity with Saramago’s politics, as analysed in Mark Sabine’s ‘Once But No Longer the Prow’ (2001). I feel an itch that their expression within The Stone Raft has probably been overlooked outside of Portugal. Reminder (to self) that if you want to read a Nobel winner, then best start with their 5th or 6th most popular work.

Also cool to visit Saramago’s olive tree grave in Lisbon and pick this up!

All'improvviso, tra lo stupore generale senza nessuna ragione apparente e senza nessuna delle conseguenze che si supporrebbe, la penisola iberica si stacca dall'Europa e comincia a navigare per l'Atlantico, seguendo una rotta precisissima e deliberata: come se avesse vita propria e coscienza di sè ed avesse deciso di muoversi per suo conto.

Le conseguenze sul pensiero comune ma anche sul vivere civile sono inenarrabili, perchè all'improvviso l'umanità intera (dai politici che governano gli stati più grandi fino all'umile dottorino dell'università di provincia) scopre che il controllo che aveva sul mondo era in realtà la pia illusione degli insetti di un gigantesco formicaio schiacciato sotto il piede di un bambino. Sembra cosciente e disgustata l' Iberia, stanca degli intrallazzi e dei maneggi per il suo controllo, stanca di un'Europa che la vuole parte di sè con le sue ricchezze ma lontana con la miseria della sua gente; ed alla fine questa enorme umiliata zattera di pietra decide di fare per suo conto, lasciando tutti i soloni di tutte le istituzioni umane con un palmo di becco e nel panico più totale.

Ma, come sempre in Saramago, la speranza di uscire dal dramma e di uscirne migliorati, rimane sempre tra la gente piccola che non fa dell'arroganza di un potere solo presunto uno strumento di sopravvivenza. Cinque piccoli borghesi vengono coinvolti in fenomeni altrettanto misteriosi e fuori controllo del distaccarsi dei Pirenei, perdendo d'un sol colpo le sicurezze offerte dal vivere civile: ma uniti dalla loro esperienza riescono a mettere insieme una convivenza peregrinando zingarescamente per la Spagna su un rattoppato carro trainato da due cavalli. E' nel parlare di questi cinque che il romanzo riesce a dare il suo meglio, perchè le loro picaresche avvventure fanno emergere quello che c'è di più genuino nell'animo umano. Si parla di gelosia e di perdono, di amore e di solitudine, di contrasto e di rappacificazione; si mostra come gli uomini e le donne semplici hanno una speranza di vivere una vita vera solo se per qualche miracolo riescono a liberarsi della pesante sovrastruttura sociale che garantisce una esistenza comoda ma finta.

Nonostante la storia sia piena di favolistici prodigi, questa riesce sempre ad essere molto credibile e non si fa nessuna fatica a sospendere l'incredulità. La frizzante vitalità dei cinque marmittoni (per tacer del cane) rende le pagine spassosissime e molto piacevoli da leggere, senza rinunciare alllo stile ridondante al limite del provocatorio che è il marchio di fabbrica di Saramago.

Un pensiero al bellissimo quanto enorme mastino Ardent, inquietante sia nelle dimensioni che nel nome che nel paese d'origine i quali sembrano esplicitamente farlo discendere dall'infernale Cerbero (persino i branchi di lupi lo temono!), ma che nella sua fedeltà ai cinque viaggiatori di infernale ha ben poco.

Grazie al genio di Saramago niente come un romanzo di fantasia riesce a spiegare meglio il reale, nelle divertentissime ma mai superficiali pagine che ci mette a disposizione. Assolutamente consigliato.

The same year that Portugal and Spain joined the European Union, José Saramago imagined the physical and geographical detachment of the Iberian Peninsula from the old continent. It might sound like a pamphlet denouncing Europe's new stranglehold on the sovereignty and integrity of these two nations with flourishing histories. However, the story tends more towards farce, and this is not surprising when we learn about the taste of the Portuguese novelist's joke.
This fact describes the wanderings of five individuals and a dog on a peninsula adrift between Europe and the Americas. Nothing seems to link these characters except their sexual nature, male and female, and their vague common experience of singular telluric signs. They will try to agree on the few resources at their disposal but will also unite in an immediate emergency.
We don't believe in this geological accident story, but that's not what matters. Saramago successfully transmits his love of words to us, and we feel his pleasure in telling us about a collective adventure that makes us grow through his deep respect for human nature.

اربعة اشخاص مختلفين، جوانا كاردا، جواكيم زازا، جوزية اناسيو و بدرو أورثي، قاموا في لحظةٍ واحدة وفي ثلاثة أماكن مختلفة بثلاثة أفعال متباينة؛ احدهم رسم خطاً في الارض، والآخر قذف حجراً في البحر وطار دون سقوط، والثالث قفز من مقعده واحس باهتزاز في الارض، والرابع تلاحقه العصافير في كل مكان.
وشكّل هؤلاء الاربعة بعبثيتهم وعدم ترابط افعالهم سبباً رئيسياً لإنشطار شبه الجزيرة الأيبيرية وانفصال اسبانيا والبرتغال عن اوروبا.
بعيداً عن الهامشي والمكرر والمتعارف عليه، فان قراءة العمل الثالث لجوزيه ساراماغو- في 2017 الطوف الحجري- وبترجمة د. طلعت شاهين. كان قراراً صائباً. وبجدارة بقي ساراماغو الكاتب المفضل لديّ. رغم ان العمل لا يرتقي الى انقطاعات الموت والعمى وكل الأسماء، والترجمة مثالية وصقيلة جداً ولا غبار فيها.
لم افهم بعض الاحداث التاريخية والايحاءات الصعبة، وكان من المستحن ان يذكر في الهامش شيئاً عما يتحدث عنه الكاتب. ولكني بصورة عامة اشك في ان جوزيه ساراماغو كان يفكر في ما يكتب، كتاباته عفوية جداً، وما ان يشرع في الكتابة حتى تأخذه الاحداث والكلمات بعيداً عن المتوقع والمألوف ولا تتجه الى أي شيء يمكن توقعه بالحسبان.
الكتاب غني جداً ورائع، ككل اعمال هذا الكاتب الاسطوري.

İber Yarımadası, bir gün anakaradan ayrılıp Atlantik Okyanusu’nda ilerlemeye başlarsa ne olur? Konusu ve üslubu ile tam bir Saramago kitabı. Tüm o detaylar, irdelemeler, ironi; derinlikli bir hayal gücünün sonucu.
Fakat ben hızlı bir okuma yaptım (yapmayı tercih ettiğim bir okuma şekli değildir), zira yazara giriş için uygun kitaplardan biri olduğunu düşünmüyorum. Detaylar yordu, coğrafyayı ve siyasi tarihini çok iyi bilmemek ironileri anlamlandırmamı zorlaştırdı, karakterlerin ruhuna tam olarak bürünemedim. Benim aksime, gerekli tüm şartları sağlıyorsanız tam olarak hakim olacağınız bir eser olabilir ya da artık Saramago’dan okuyacağınız pek kitap kalmamışsa tercih edilebilir.

“hayat insanlar doğduğunda başlamaz, öyle olsa her gün kazanılmış bir gün olurdu, hayat çok daha sonra ve genellikle de çok geç başlar, başlar başlamaz biten hayatlardansa hiç bahsetmeyelim, ki bir şairi şunu söylemeye itmişlerdir, Ah olma ihtimali olanların tarihini kim yazacak.”

Solo un genio come Saramago poteva raccontare con così tanta poesia ed eleganza un evento catastrofico di tali proporzioni. Nella zona del Cerbere, al confine franco-spagnolo, dove i cani che non hanno corde vocali, cominciano ad abbaiare, ci si prepara alla catastrofe, ormai imminente. Qui la terra comincia a tremare e diventa una "zattera di pietra", errando nell'Oceano e lasciando che ognuno vada incontro al suo destino. Nella zattera di pietra si condensano le tematiche dell'uomo e dell'umanità, quali lo spaesamento, la desolazione, la solitudine, l'irrazionalità. Ognuno cerca di trovare una alternativa al proprio destino, quando ormai tutto viene a mancare.
In questo mondo che è una "commedia di sbagli", Saramago scova l'irreale nel reale dando vita a un libro che mescola prodigi, oscuri presagi che altro non sono che una grande metafora e allegoria della vita che stravolge cose e persone, trascinandole in balìa della corrente e delle onde.

للكاتب في هذه الرواية ، إيمان كبير بحتمية الأشياء ، و بترابطها و بنتائجها المتعلقة بكل عنصر داخل في التكوين ، في مفاهيم العلم ، يسمونها في الفيزياء بتأثير الفراشة ، و في مفاهيم الأدب ، سماها في الرواية بأنه "ما كان ، كان يجب عليه أن يكون" ، لذلك ، عندما تبدأ في القراءة تعرف أن كل المدخلات العبثية الصغيرة حقًا فصلت شبه الجزيرة الأيبيرية عن أوروبا بالكامل و أخذت تطوف في الأطلنطي في مسارات مستقيمة. و ان الرحلة الأخرى التي كانت بداخل الرحلة الأكبر ، كانت عبثية و ليس لها معنى هي الأخرى ، و لكنها " كانت لأنها كان يجب لها أن تكون " ، و أنا بدوري أقول أن الرواية " كتبت لأنها كان يجب عليها أن تكتب " ، كان يجب على ساراماجو أن يظهر كل هذه الإتفعالات الإستقلالية ، و المتمردة ، و الملولة ، و الحالمة ، كما ظهرت في هذه الرواية ، لأنها كان يجب عليها أن تظهر .
