'Cisnes salvajes' es el relato de la juventud de la autora, la historia de su madre y de su abuela, mujeres increíblemente valientes que tuvieron que pasar por el infierno de nacer en la China del siglo XX.
Creo que es uno de esos libros con los que es imposible no enfurecerse o llorar de rabia y tristeza por la crueldad e idiotez del ser humano. Por suerte el libro también está lleno de personas maravillosas.

No dejo de darle vueltas al hecho de que aún hoy la Historia de China y la dictadura de Mao siguen siendo grandes desconocidas y olvidadas por Occidente. Siempre que alguien piensa en el "gran villano" se acuerda de Hitler o Stalin pero todos olvidamos a Mao... su Revolución Cultural es una de las cosas más aterradoras que he leído en toda mi vida.

Y sí, 'Cisnes salvajes' es un libro denso al que hay que dedicarle su tiempo pero cada minuto de su lectura merece la pena... Aunque siempre me ha interesado la Historia de China, leer este libro me ha hecho comprender muchísimas cosas de ese enorme país y su cultura, y en fin, no puedo más que recomendarlo.

Y la resaca, señores, la resaca va a ser épica.

To evade death, a girl runs towards a window and gives herself to the laws of universe, obviously wanting to end her pain and humiliation. However, she lives, crippled not just physically but mentally as well.

A baby is born amidst much happiness. Unfortunately, the baby is a girl. Her feet are bound so tightly that her bones break. However, she now has a pair of small feet which will lure her husband, unless he sees the wound that is festering.

Where do I begin to write about the experience that coalesced with China of the twentieth century? Do I begin with the concubine of a warlord? Or do I try to portray the megalomaniac that was Mao? Or even better, do I try to convince you, my reader, to pick up a copy of Wild Swans?

Beginning with Jung Chang's grandmother's childhood, Wild Swans is one of those few books which kept me captivated from the beginning. The grandmother had her foot binded, she is reduced to a concubine of a warlord because of her father's whim. The whirlwind that was her life, the grandmother soon finds herself away from a place which nestled her as much as it could have, and left her in a place which brought her the turmoil of conflicting emotions.

Jung Chang's mother, a staunch communist, grows up in a world which is even more topsy-turvy than her mother's (it is easy for me to say so because reading just one book, I feel I understand communism and China's political history, irony intended). Change is coming but is the change for good? Only time will tell.

Wild Swans, a nonfiction, never seemed like a nonfiction to me. It is someone's life, it is someone's country's history, it is someone's pain and humiliation. Most of all, Wild Swans is truth. It is as much past as it is present and future.

“Cisnes Salvajes” de Jung Chang es una obra estremecedora que ofrece una mirada íntima y reveladora sobre la historia moderna de China. A través del relato de tres generaciones de mujeres —su abuela, su madre y ella misma—, la autora traza un testimonio vivo del nacimiento y desarrollo del comunismo en el país, mostrando con gran sensibilidad el impacto de estos cambios en la vida cotidiana.
Lo que más me impresionó fue cómo la novela retrata la transformación radical que sufrió China durante el siglo XX. La Revolución Cultural, el liderazgo de Mao Zedong y las reformas comunistas no solo alteraron las estructuras políticas y económicas, sino que también implicaron una ruptura drástica con muchas tradiciones ancestrales. Jung Chang describe con lucidez cómo algunas de estas costumbres, como los matrimonios arreglados o la opresión de las mujeres, se vieron cuestionadas y desmanteladas. Sin embargo, también evidencia la pérdida de valiosas prácticas culturales, la destrucción de la identidad familiar y la desaparición de legados históricos.
Este contraste entre progreso y destrucción está presente a lo largo de toda la narración. La autora logra transmitir la complejidad de estos procesos, mostrando cómo el deseo de modernización se vio empañado por el autoritarismo y la represión. Su crítica valiente y honesta hacia el régimen comunista es, sin duda, una de las razones por las que “Cisnes Salvajes” sigue estando prohibido en China. Esta censura solo subraya la relevancia de la obra como testimonio de las voces silenciadas por la historia oficial.
Con una prosa sencilla y crítica, Jung Chang convierte la memoria familiar en un espejo de la historia nacional.
¿Recomendaría este libro a todo el mundo? No. Este libro no es una novela y por tanto, no está narrado como tal. Tiene un toque de crónica periodística muy fuerte que la autora equilibra con la historia más personal de su familia. Contiene una alta carga de historia y política que aunque yo he encontrado interesantísima, sé que no es del agrado de mucha gente. Lo recomiendo si buscas comprender la historia reciente de China desde una perspectiva personal y conmovedora. Es un libro que deja huella, invitando a cuestionar y reflexionar sobre los dilemas del cambio social y la memoria colectiva.

 عندما تشعر بالخواء والفقد التام عند إتمام الكتاب ، عندها تعلم أنه كتاب رائع .. وهذا بالضبط ما شعرتُ به عندما أنهيته.

تضمن الكتاب سيرة شخصية للكاتبة وأمها وجدتها نقلت لنا فيها تاريخ الصين منذ 1909 إلى موت الطاغية ماو، نقلت لنا الكاتبة ببراعة تامة أحداثا بدقة مدهشة قبل أن تُولد هي، جسدت لنا فيها معالم الحياة الاجتماعية والسياسية في كل فترة وبأسلوب محايد ناقلةً إيانا بين حروب أهلية بين قوات الكومنتانغ والشيوعين وبين هرطقات ماو والقضاء على الساحرات والفوضى العارمة التي شنت البلاد لغياب السلطة العاقلة! 
 
من الأحداث المثيرة بالنسبة لي كيف أن الأم والأب تعاملوا مع أهداف الشيوعية وكرسوا أنفسهم للقضية بصرامة تامة وبأنانية محضة في حين أن الأولاد كانوا مشتتين بين الحضانات والأقارب ، وكم اتفقت جداً مع تصريح الجدة حين قالت : أنهما أبوان بلا قلب. 

الأب الصارم الذي أفنى عمره لقضية كان كبش الفداء فيها حين انقلبت الاوضاع;  اكتشف في نهاية العمر أن العائلة يجب أن تكون في المرتبة الأولى وأن الندم لا يفيد. 

أمر آخر أثار استغرابي هو موضوع الجواري;  إنه شبيه بتعدد الزوجات لدينا لكن كان عند الصينين القدامى بمثابة الزواج ولكن من الدرجة الثانية. كما كان غريباً أن تتفرق العائلة في مناطق مشتتة مرارا وتكرارا وسرعان ما يعودون عندما تتغير الأوضاع. 

تعرفتُ أيضاً ولأول مرة على الطاغية ماو الذي استفرد بكل صفات الديكتاتورية ولكن مع ميزة إضافية وهي الجنون المخلوط بجنون العظمة! 

قد يعتبر البعض أن الكتاب جاف بسبب كثرة الأحداث والشخصيات لكن برأيي أن هذا ما ميزه فلم يكن فيه أي استعارة أو فقرة غير مهمة ومن خلاله تعلمت الكثير عن المبادئ الشيوعية وكيف استخدمت الأساليب الوحشية والمعتقدات الخاطئة لهدف ظنوا أنه سليم. 

وددتُ لو تطرقت الكاتبة للأوضاع بعد موت ماو بإسهاب أكثر وتمنيت أن تتطرق عن حياتها ورأيها بالعيش في نظام مغاير عن نظام الصين.

قرأت هذه الرواية بعد 1984 لجورج أورويل، والآن فقط لا أتعجب وأندهش من قريحة أورويل التى جادت بمثلها رواية،
فإن الوضع الشيوعىّ فى ذلك الوقت لو استمر,,
ما كان ليفضى إلا لما كتبه أورويل
الكتابان أو الروايتان كلاهما وجهٌ للعملة نفسها؛ يُعكس فى أحدهما ما غُفل ذكره فى الآخر

أثار دهشتي قدرة الكاتبة على سرد وقائع مرت بها جدتها وأمها قبل أن تأتى للحياة ، وكذلك سردها لحياة أفراد عائلتها بالتزامن طوال الرواية كان مثار إعجاب، فهو سرد حيادى تمامًا لا تستدر الكاتبة فيه عطفك هى فقط تفرغ ذاكرتها، فلا يزورك إملال حتى فى تلك الفقرات التى تصف الوضع السياسى

De algunas lecturas una no se repone fácilmente. Es tan duro lo que cuentan, tan conmovedor que, mientras lees, notas como lo narrado va dejándote una huella permanente en el alma y en la memoria.

'Cisnes salvajes', un libro todavía prohibido en China, es una de esas lecturas. Un libro que cuenta la historia de tres generaciones de mujeres valerosas, abuela, madre e hija, que sobrevivieron (a un alto precio) a la tumultuosa historia de China a lo largo del s.XX.

Nieta de una concubina, hija de una acérrima militante comunista, Jung Chang nos confía en estas memorias, magistralmente escritas, el trágico destino de su familia, desde los días de la antigua China, con sus tradiciones ancestrales; los días negros de la ocupación japonesa y la guerra civil y, finalmente, el infierno comunista.

¡He aprendido tanto con este libro!
Jung Chang logra algo extremadamente difícil, aunar la pequeña y la gran historia de forma brillante. La historia de su familia, se convierte así en el fresco de toda una nación. Se suceden los acontecimientos históricos, los entresijos de la política y los dramas familiares; las historias puntuales de personajes anónimos se entrelazan con el destino de poderosos dirigentes. Y así asistimos con horror al espectáculo de una de las páginas más negras de la historia universal.

Es imposible imaginar el horror de las historias que se narran en este libro. Que no te invada un sentimiento de impotencia y rabia al leer sobre las atrocidades cometidas durante la Revolución Cultural. Imposible permanecer impasible ante este inmenso mosaico de vidas rotas, del que sobresalen las historias de estos tres cisnes salvajes que dan título al libro.
Tres mujeres a las que he admirado desde el primer instante en el que Jung Chang empieza a confiarnos su historia.

Me emociono con solo recordar la increíble historia de su abuela. Una mujer valiente, tierna, íntegra y generosa que siguió compartiendo con sus nietos las viejas historias y poemas (prohibidos por la Revolución) en medio del terror. Que se negó a cortarse sus largos cabellos y a cortar todas las flores del jardín; a renunciar a toda la belleza del mundo.
Que únicamente cierra sus ojos y muere tras haber visto por última vez a su única hija...
Una hija que sufre lo indecible entre las páginas de 'Cisnes salvajes'. Os prometo que siento escalofríos al pensar en los padres de la protagonista mientras escribo estas líneas.

Ellos que creyeron ciegamente en la Revolución comunista, en Mao y en su mensaje mesiánico. Su despertar es tan duro, el precio que tuvieron que pagar por no vender su alma y sus principios tan alto, que no puedo rememorarlo sin que me entren ganas de llorar.

Podéis imaginar lo mucho que he sufrido durante esta lectura y, os puedo asegurar que viviréis la misma agonía si decidís darle una oportunidad; pero os prometo que merece la pena, ¡vaya si lo merece!

'Cisnes salvajes' es uno de esos libros necesarios que dejan una profunda huella. Un inmenso coup de cœur que os recomiendo encarecidamente.

“Father is close, Mother is close, but neither is as close as Chairman Mao.”

A fascinating description of one family's experiences of China's political upheavals across the 20th century, focusing on Jung Chang’s grandmother, mother, and then herself.

Although the family are fairly privileged much of the time, they still experience great hardships: being a Party member, or even Party official, was no guarantee of immunity from persecution and sometimes torture.

Hard to categorise - but don’t be daunted

It's part biography/autobiography and part a historical/ political/ psychological exposition of how Communist China came into being and how it maintained its hold on its citizens, even during extreme hardship, such as famine. However, it has the readability of a novel, eschewing sheer horror and dry history - quite an achievement.

This book can seem daunting because of its size, subject matter and fame, but it's actually a riveting read and although some of the content is harrowing, the writing style is very easy going. It is a complex story, but it is not confusing.

It's subtitled "Three daughters of China", but it’s a story for everyone. Strong women are in the foreground, but one of the most powerfully drawn characters is Jung Chang's father: born poor, largely self-educated, who loved literature, was a passionate and principled Communist (putting Party before family), rising to power as an official, but who couldn't cope when he saw his beliefs being violated in the name of the Party.

Contradictions inherent in the system

“They verbally attacked each other with Mao's quotations, making cynical use of his guru-like elusiveness - it was easy to select a quotation of Mao's to suit any situation, or even both sides of the same argument.”

Although I have read quite a few books about China, this one gets to the heart of the contradictions of The Party and how to brainwash a vast nation far better than many others. When Jung Chang subsequently wrote a biography of Mao, she'd already done much of the groundwork in Wild Swans.

Brutality and hypocrisy of various kinds are described, but it's some of the subtler hardships that were especially vivid. I find it extraordinary that strong family ties could coexist with couples not allowed to live together and an apparent casualness/resignation of children left to live with wet nurses, relatives or in boarding nurseries for years.

During the Cultural Revolution, which began when Jung Chan was a teenager, ignorance was glorified (even in universities) and beautiful artefacts destroyed; the family were expelled from the official compound and sent to live in rooms in an old mansion:
"Beauty was so despised that my family was sent to this lovely house as a punishment."

Unexpected levity

There is humour too: sending those studying English to a southern port to practise by talking to foreign sailors; not being able to rename a street whose sign was too high, and traffic chaos when it was decided that red was a positive colour so oughtn't to mean "stop"!

The extraordinary degree of organisation in some aspects of life and none in others aligned with my expectations, but also highlighted contradictions, such as being sent to "learn" from the peasants, with no guidance as to what was to be learnt, nor account of the peasants not wanting extra mouths attached to not very useful hands.

Flaws

The main problems are minor, but nonetheless irritating.

* Although the political history is explained very well, because it is also autobiographical, important events that didn't affect the family (such as the Long March) are barely mentioned and this is where its confused identity between biography and political text book are a weakness.

* People refer to others by relationship ("my mother", "my father's mother in law" etc), which is confusing when different characters talk about their relatives, without using names.

* Some passages sound clichéd; that is partly because I have read many other books on similar subjects, but it is also because at times the writing style actually is somewhat banal.

Nevertheless, this is an insightful, accessible, and enjoyable book.

Horror and hope

There are many horrors in this book (though generally not graphically described), but I didn't find it depressing: the indomitable spirit of many of the people, coupled with the fact I know Jung Chang is now happy and successful, give an air of hope.

Freedom?

China's people are still far from free, but having read this book and travelled round China in '92 and '08, the transformation is remarkable - and ongoing. It’s a crowded country, but also one of tranquil beauty.
