I'm giving this book five stars because I definitely thought it was amazing. BUT ... like every other Coelho book I've read, it let me down in the end.

How can he articulate so many nuggets of wisdom, often through characters the writing of which expresses the irony and profundity of their insights, and yet packaged in stories with such cliche outcomes?!?! So many of his books explore the ephermerality of love, the moment, the permanence of change, the fleetingness of forever... and yet, his characters always seem to end up living "happily ever after."

This one was about my favorite topic(s): sex, pain and suffering, pleasure, enthrallment, identity; the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves ("trust me, I'm telling you stories"), the rationalization of emotion and spiritualization of the mundane--Hey: the mystery of life.

Maria--a prostitute--is exposed to an evening of sado-masochistic role play with a "special client" and finds freedom from herself and her desires during orgasm, tied up and whipped. Then another lover (another "special client") convinces her to not to go down that path, that freedom can be found testing the limits of desire, not the limits of pain. They have their own little role play--their relationship is based as much on fantasy as the other. After a night of bliss, she leaves him to go back to Brazil, cherishing the memory that can be spoiled by "real life."

But, then he intercepts her in Paris with roses (it was their destiny! ick) and they live happily ever after.


So, to sum up (as E just pointed out): The dirty parts I liked. The ending, not so much.

C’était toujours forcé pour ses pratiquantes , mais dans ce fameux roman était un choix purement choisi par l’héroïne par sa propre conviction de s’aventurer à tour et à travers avec les hommes qu’elle choisit soigneusement..

J’étais contre l’héroïne depuis le début et j’ai pensé longtemps est-ce qu’il existe vraiment un cas pareil au monde réel ???

I don't normally write reviews for books I read over a decade ago and haven't touched since, but today is that kind of a day. A friend was talking about spending 12 minutes being put on hold by his bank, and I thought "Alas, that's one minute too many for me to make a bad joke about Coelho's Eleven Minutes and pain".

And that got me thinking, so here I am. Having flashbacks to my misguided youth.

My god, was Paulo Coelho huge back in the day. It felt like everyone and their dog was reading "The Alchemist" and being inspired by his words of wisdom. I, too, was impressed - devouring the likes of "The Alchemist", "The Fifth Mountain" and all that jazz.

Naturally, I also had to read "Eleven Minutes" when it came out. And it was... well. Lackluster. Until the very end, when it took a nose dive.

Reader, I don't remember much. There was a woman, who (possibly?) was a prostitute - either that, or she was sleeping with a lot of men for... reasons. I don't remember the exact plot of the thing, but I do know Coelho's brand is "spiritual" enough that he can't write sex without love without justifying it. And a woman sleeping around? My god, that definitely needs explanation! A heroine does not simply-...

Anywhoozles. Our heroine is sleeping with a dude (or multiple dudes?). Sex may or may not have lost most of its value to her now. But the point is - she's discovered BDSM. She likes a bit of spice in her sex life lately.

I can't remember the exact details of what she's getting into, but it's definitely on the pain side of things, based on the way Coelho "resolves" her desires.

Our heroine has a client/friend/boyfriend (can't remember) whom she's confiding in. She tells him all about her BDSM experiences, and he's really not into all of that. He's also playing the role of spiritual teacher/master/something, and he'll be the one to teach her to take her pleasure in more "spiritual" ways (I think he might have his own kinks, but they don't involve pain, so they're not icky kinks, but totally pure shit that's angelic or whatnot. Delayed gratification? Maybe?).

Anyway, this disasterfest of a sex ed ends when he puts her off BDSM by having her walk barefoot on rocks until she's hurt really badly and the pain stops feeling sexy.

*stares into the camera*

*flips a table*

That's not how it works! That's not how any of this works! Even my high school self knew enough about sex and BDSM to be entirely aware that THIS IS NOT HOW IT WORKS! Like holy fuck, masochists aren't into any pain at any point? People don't randomly have orgasms at the dentist's office, Coelho!

And then he fucks her brains out employing his own techniques of spiritual sex, and she has spiritual revelations, now cured of her lower tendencies.

The. fucking. end. (Unless it's not, and I erased the actual ending from my memory. It's been a while)

On the one hand, it's a badly-researched book written with the purpose of kink-shaming, and probably greatly appeals to people who either aren't sadistic or masochistic, or to those who *are* and feel guilty about it. On the other hand, it really made me see how shallow Coelho is; so I found it very useful back in the day.

A last word of advice: read better porn, guys. Read better porn.

إحدى عشر دقيقة باولو كويلهو

يتحدث هذا الكتاب عن حياة ماريا.. والتي يحدث فيما بعد أن تصير عاهرة !
قد يكون سهلاً أن نقول أن "الجنس" هو الموضوع الأساسي لهذه الرواية.. وهنا يخطر ببالي كل تلك الكتب العربية التي وضعت ذلك الموضوع نصب عينيها وليس
لذاته إنما للترويج.. فهل كان هنا أيضاً ترويجياً ؟؟ أم هو الغاية بعينها ؟

ماريا فتاة برازيلية.. لم يكن فيها ما يميزها عن أي فتاة برازيلية أخرى.. لكن كويلهو اختارها ليقدّم لنا حكاية تؤرق الجنس البشري منذ الأزل.. الحب والجسد.

من السذاجة أن نفكر في الحب بين الرجل والمرأة بشكل مجرد عن علاقته بالجسد. وكما يقول لنا كويلهو في الرواية أنها –أي الجنس- أو لربما نقول "الحب" قد يكون المحرك الأساسي في حياتنا كبشر. هل هذه مبالغة ؟

في الواقع أرى أن كل امرءٍ قد ينظر لهذا الكتاب بطريقة مختلفة.. فلربما تنصدم مما يقدمه الكاتب من جرأة في الطرح وكيف له ألا يكون كذلك وهو يقدّم لنا سيرة حياة إمرأة عاهرة ؟! ولربما يقودك ذلك لأن تكره الكتاب أو على الأقل أن تتظاهر بكرهه وتبدأ بإهالة الشتائم والتحدث عن أي درجة من السخافة التي قد يصل لها بعض الكتاب من أجل الشهرة وبضع دولارات إضافية من وراء حقوق الطبع.

من عادتي أن أضع معتقداتي والوازع الأخلاقي لدي جانباً عند قراءتي لنص أدبي "روائي" وفي هذا النص أرى ما وراء الجنس والجرأة المطروحة بعض ما يقوله علم النفس في تفسير السلوك الإنساني.. ولستُ أجد كويلهو يخرج في هذا الكتاب عن ذلك.

الأسلوب المستخدم كان جذاباً.. وأجده أفضل مما كان عليه في الخيميائي.. ولا ترى فيه شيئاً خارجاً أو أنك تشعر معه بأنه لا ينتمي لسياق الطرح أو الموضوع الأساسي في الرواية.

التقديم المبدئي لماريا كان طبيعياً جداً.. وهذا يتناسب تماماً مع فكرة أنه لا تولد إمرأة "عاهرة" بل تتحوّل إلى ذلك. ولا يهم من أين أتت أو ما تحمله في عقلها من آراء ومعتقدات.. فالدنيا تسير كما تشاء وقد تحوّل أي شخص إلى ما تشاء. وقد يبدو هنا أن ما يحاول كويلهو أن يقوله هو أن الدعارة أمر عادي.. لا لا على الإطلاق.. إنما هي النظرة الإنسانية للكائن خلف الجسد. والذي لا يحق لنا أن ننظر له بدونية، فما يدريك لربما وصلت إلى مثل ما وصلت إليه إن تعرضت لذات الظروف.

الدافع الأساسي لماريا هو الحب.. وليس الجنس.. وهذا أمر ظاهر منذ مراهقتها وفكرتها البريئة عن علاقة الرجل والمرأة.. وكل رحلتها في هذا الكتاب وما خاضته من تجارب كان يحمل غايتها تلك.

لفت إنتباهي أمران آخران هنا؛

الأول: العربي الذي دفع مبلغاً باهظاً لليلة مع ماريا.. والذي قد يبدو مقحماً على النص.. وفي الواقع لستُ أراه كذلك.. لكن كويلهو مثال حي لما يعرف عند الغرب بعقدة الشرق والتي يقابلها عندنا عقدة الخواجا.. استخدم كويلهو الصورة النمطية المعروفة عن العرب لا أكثر ووظفها في الرواية.. ومن الرواية نرى أن ماريا قضت مثل تلك الليلة مع كثير من الرجال ومن كل الأعراق.. فلمَ أتعجب أن كان واحد منهم عربياً ؟؟ وخاصة أنهم لا يتعففون في الواقع عن ذلك على العكس هم معروفون بالإقبال الشديد عليه.

الثاني: مسألة أن قسماً جيداً من الرجال الذين طلبوا خدمات ماريا لم يكونوا في حاجة منها للجسد.. إنما للروح، فكثير منهم كان أقصى ما يطلبه منها أن تسمعه.. "مرافقة" لا أكثر. وجدتُ هذا الجانب مثيراً للإهتمام وحقيقياً إلى حد بعيد.

هل كانت وظيفة هذا الكتاب أن يجعلنا أقرب للخطيئة ؟ أو أن نتقبل الدعارة ؟؟ لا، إنما هو طرح عن الحب بطريقة جريئة.. من قال شيئاً أن العاهرات لا يحببن ؟ يقول كويلهو في إهداء الكتاب عبارة أعجبتني:

موريس غرافلين هذا الكتاب مهدىً إليك. لدي واجب اتجاهك واتجاه زوجتك وحفيدتك واتجاه نفسي، التحدث عما يشغلني وليس عما يود الناس سماعه. إن بعض الكتب تجعلنا نحلم وبعضها الآخر يذكرنا بالواقع، لكن لا يمكن لأي كاتب أن يتنصل مما هو جوهري لكتابته، ألا وهو النزاهة التي يكتب بها. باولو كويلهو

ختاماً.. هناك الكثير في هذا الرواية ما أستطيع احترامه.. وهناك أكثر ما لا أستطيع هضمه.. لكنني أتفهم ما حاول كويلهو هنا أن يفعله..

قرأتها قبل سنتين تقريباً لا أذكر الإنطباع العام عنها لكنها كانت تتحدث عن حياة فتاة سافرت من البرازيل وأحلام الثراء تداعب مخيلتها بعد أن ألتقاها تاجر أوربي
لتصطدم بالواقع وتعلم أن تودد ذلك التاجر لم يكن إلا ليجلب راقصات برازيليات إلى أوربا فتجد نفسها أمام واقع لا تملك فيه الخيار فتعتمد على ( الجنس ) كمصدر دخل لكي تعيش وتجمع المال الكافي لتعود لوطنها في هذه الفترة تقرأ الكثير من الكتب وتثقف نفسها في مجلات شتى ,
الرواية سلطت الضوء على الناحيه الإنسانية من حياة العاهرات , ربما يعتبروها البعض متجاوزة لكل الحدود لكنني أرى أنها تحدثت عن البطله كـ إنسانة أولاً بغض النظر عما هي عليه .
إمممم أستطيع القول عنها بأنها عادية جداً ,

I don't know if this book was meaningless or I just didn't get the point. was it trying to say BDSM is a way to get close to GOD? was it trying to say being a prostitute is holy? was it trying to say true love is always waiting for you with The Light?

Šķiet, ka autoram ļoti gribējās iepazīsties ar prostitūtām, šim mērķim viņš izvēlējās Šveici un laba vīriešu žurnāla līmenī apraksta uzzināto. Vidējās dzimumakta ilgums esot 11 minūtes, tas viņa galvenais atklājums. Viss pārējais paprasts un garlaicīgs stāsts, kurā nav arī nekā erotiska. Grāmata var noderēt vienīgi tiem vīriešiem, kuri dodas komandējumā uz Šveici un grib zināt, kā tur satikt un pareizi sarunāt pērkamu sievieti. Ja jums nav šādas specifiskas intereses, tad nav vērts tērēt laiku.

پی دی اف ترجمه فارسی شو خوندم و یا اونقدر سانسور شده بود که منظور نویسنده رو نمی رسوند یا واقعا نویسنده یه کلی گویی کرده و حتی از تفکرات ماریا هم خیلی عمیق و دقیق صحبت نکرده. شاید هم مترجم ایرانی خیلی از حرفها و تفکرات ماریا رو صلاح دیده حذف کنه! به هر حال نسبت به بقیه کارهای کوئیلو به نظرم خیلی بی سر و ته اومد!

Some of my friends were raving about Coelho's "The Alchemist"; however, my first encounter with his writing is this book. I'm a little bit disappointed, though, because I expected more.

My friends said that Coelho writes simple topics but with philosophies that could give new meanings on the subject--and some enhancement to the readers. I do agree on the philosophical thingy, but for my point of view, it doesn't quite fit in this book.

Maria, the prostitute who became the main character in this book, is too sophisticated--way too sophisticated and too philosophical to the point of sounding false. Although the first part was engaging enough when Coelho describing Maria's desperate life in the small village in Brazil, he became too preachy when he started to explain the reasons of why Maria finally ended up being a prostitute, with the many false justifications on the many things she decided or thought of, including on the spiritual side.

I could just say that Coelho did a fine research, though, on the sexual subject.

تدور الرواية في إطار طقوس الجنس والدعارة ، فعذرية الجسد لاتهم بقدر ماتهم عذرية الروح ، فالإنسان لا يعرف نفسه إلا إذا بلغت حدودها القصوى .

السؤال الفلسفي؟! الذي طرحه كويلو في الرواية بين تفاصيل السطور ، يفتح الآفاق في معركة الإنسان ضد نفسه في محاولة الإجابة والتبرير ، فهل يذهب الجندي إلى الحرب ليقاتل عدوه ويموت، ام ليقاتل ويموت من أجل بلاده.

الرواية لغتها سافرة ، تحاول العاهرة المثقفة أن تنقل لك كفاحها لمعرفة الفرق بين المتعة التي تتمثل في الإغواء لجمع المال والمتعة التي تحقق تكامل الحب والشعور بالأمان والسلام النفسي.

باولو كويلو يقول أن محور الكون يتمثل في أحد عشر دقيقة.

Author's Writing Style: 4 stars!

Yay: It is good. It entertains me. I love how he mixes psychology into the narration. It sounds like he is not only telling a story, he is bringing you to another level of wisdom and logic. This is my first time to read a book by him that shifts to first person perspective. It sounds better. The narration becomes more memorable. It is insightful too. Nay: A paragraph tends to have a lot of commas.

Characters' Development: 4 stars!

Yay: Maria is a strong resilient lead character but she is not the smartest. She comes from a background in which her mom conditions her that having more money makes her the happiest person in the world. Whoops. Red Alert: Level 5! Anyhow, consider it a blessing that she can write well. Her diary allows her to improve the way she sees the world around her. Acceptance makes her happy. It is worth more than any amount her client can pay her. Nay: One character disappeared like a bubble. What happened to Terence?

Plot: 5 stars!

Yay: Maria fails to land a descent job in Switzerland. All alone in a land away from home, Maria turns to prostitution. Yes, you heard me right. Your interpretation is right too. This book contains a lot of sex - even BDSM. It is almost like Fifty Shades of Grey, but with substance and quality. This is more of a story of acceptance and sacrifice. Not just the pleasure of any sex activities. Nay: It is a predictable ending. I do not hate it. Just plain predictable.

Dieses Buch spaltet wieder die Menschen in: „ich mag es“ und „geht gar nicht“
Eigentlich ist das Thema fast schon egal. Es geht um Prostitution. Eine Frau, die frustriert ist und auf der Suche nach was im Leben ist.
Ich hab dieses Thema schon aufgenommen, ich hab auch den Inhalt aufgenommen und hab an mancher Stelle auch mal eine Pause gemacht und mir gedacht: na, das schreibt er grad nicht wirklich?!
Aber irgendwas hat dieses Buch. Sowas was einem zum Nachdenken anregt. Sowas leichtes. Man schwimmt auf einer Welle bis zum Schluss mit.

Wenn es euch neugierig macht, lest es einfach mal. Liest sich schnell weg.

Nach dem zweiten Mal lesen. Dieser Schreibstil ist einfach so besonders. Das Buch lebt ein Stück in einem weiter, wenn man es nicht liest, ich liebe sowas.
Es hat definitiv was besonderes und bewegt einen. Man kann sich drauf einlassen, aber man könnt auch bestimmt ein anderes Buch vom Autor lesen, wenn einem dieses Thema nicht so liegt.

Ich belass es bei 2x lesen und lass das Buch mal weiter ziehen.
