Thus, I come to you half a year later - that's right, it took me half a year to get here- BUT worry not for I remember every detail as if I read it yesterday.
-- Set in Barcelona, in the summer of 1945 - following the Spanish Civil War, the novel tells the story of Daniel Sempere, who is taken to the Cemetery of Forgotten Books by his father, a secondhand book merchant.
The Cemetery of Forgotten Books is a secret place, where a huge collection of books that have been forgotten or have fallen into oblivion is kept.
Daniel selects a book called The Shadow of the Wind by Julián Carax, an author who seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth and so have all his published books. Daniel's copy of book seems to be the only one left in existence.
So begins an incredible journey that carries Daniel through a gothic city filled with fantastic bookstores, exotic cafes, abandoned mansions and spirit-haunted graveyards.
-- The book itself has two main stories: that of Julian Carax and Daniel Sempere, written in the first person by both. And as the story threads its way into Daniel's life, the lives of both begin to intertwine. Daniel sees, bears uncanny resemblances to that of the protagonist in The Shadow of the Wind but in order to uncover the mystery as to how and why he'll have to dig deeper into Carax's biography. Zafón spins a web of intrigue so thick that it ensnares the reader from the very beginning.
-- The characters were exuberant, well-written and larger than life in their tragedies as in their joys and desires. The book is populated with a cast of characters filled with dark and mysterious pasts, the tortured souls, guilt-ridden lovers, doomed and solitary eccentrics and more. But the most interesting part —second to Carax’s past— was discovering how all of their stories were interwoven together.
Daniel isn't what you’d call heroic, but he's a sympathetic figure and very human in his failings, and beneath the novel’s colourful facade is also a touching story of Daniel’s relationship with his father, the proprietor of a highly respected bookstore that is barely surviving as readers are decreasing at an alarming rate. I loved his father and their bond so much that I was constantly terrified that something would happen to jeopardise their relationship.
Fermin Romero de Torres was definitely one of the most interesting characters in here. Imprisoned and tortured for being on the wrong side of the war, he was saved from beggary by Daniel through a ‘random’ encounter and becomes Daniel’s advisor, protector and confidante - as well, help him dig into the murky past of the people connected Carax.
He's eccentric, clever and charming and his deep friendship and loyalty to Daniel, combined with his sharp wit and cunning are the comic relief of the dark and gloomy tone of the book.
Julian Carax’s story, in my opinion, was the most heartbreaking of all (and there are plenty of depressing stories here, I tell you). He had the odds stacked against him right from the start that the poor guy didn’t stand a chance. His dark, mysterious character takes monumental twists and turns as his story slowly unravels to be one of tortured past and full of heartache.
And then there’s Fumero, the villain of ages. Thinking about him gives me chest pains much less writing about him. Just know that he plays a big role in the lives of many of the characters and... he’s the devil’s spawn. Suffice it to say, I loath him.
TSoTW is an atmospheric book full of passion and revenge, heartbreaking love, grave disappointments and mysteries whose layers peel away ever so slowly. The world is corrupt and cruel where the scum come out at the top and the inexorability of human destinies are grimmer than any ghostly stories... it's also about a bit of redemption.
Read it is all I can say, my friends. READ. IT.

قرأت تلك الرواية بسقف توقعات مرتفع، لكني راهنت على جواد خاسر
الرواية تدور في مدينة برشلونة أيان الحكم الديكاتوري للجنرال فرانكو، الراوي طفل صغير ووالده يمتلك متجر للكتب، في بداية الرواية يصطحب الوالد ابنه الوحيد لما يسمي مقبرة الكتب المنسية، حيث يوجد نسخة من كل كتاب مهدد بالضياع، ينتقي الولد كتاب بشكل عشوائي ليحتفظ به، ليقع حظه على رواية لكاتب اسباني مغمور عنوانها ظل الريح
الرواية تدور بعد ذلك في خطان متوازيان، حياة الراوي وهو يكبر وبخاصة حياته العاطفية، والخط الموازي يدور حول رحلته للبحث عن الكاتب الغامض مؤلف رواية ظل الأفعي، الانتقال بين الخطان لم يكن سلساً على الاطلاق، بمجرد أن تندمج في أحدهما حتي ينقلك الكاتب إلى الخط الموازي فجأة بعد أن تكون قد نسيت الكثير من أحداثه، وكعادة كل الأعمال اللاتينية، الرواية مزدحمة جداً بالشخصيات وهو ما يربك القارئ في النهاية، وكثير منها شخصيات ثانوية، بمجرد أن تحفظ اسم شخصية حتى تختفى
السرد مربك للغاية، وتيرة الأحداث تتصاعد بشكل جيد في بعض فصول الرواية، ثم تتباطئ بشكل يثير ملل القارئ في فصول أخرى، ولا تبدأ باكتشاف مغزى الرواية إلى وهي تقارب على الانتهاء
كما قلت الرواية واقعية بها ظل من الفانتازيا، وتوجد بها ثغرات تهدم أي عمل أدبي، ومنها السهولة الغريبة التي تحكي بها عدة شخصيات مختلفة تفاصيل خاصة للراوي عن الكاتب الذي يبحث عنه

Impressive? Addictive? Amazing? I don’t even know which word would done justice to sum up all the feels I got from this book. Yes.. I loved it! and after reading this I know that Gothic fiction will never die..

You guys should know how much I love Gothic romance, but it’s not that every gothic fiction will be incredibly fantastic like this. It’s not just an intense gothic mystery. It’s also suspenseful, beautiful, and gut-wrenching. Gosh.. when all the mystery begins to unfold, it’s crazily unputdownable that I don’t even want to work, do the job or anything.
Shock. Terrify. Smile. Surprise. Oh.. All the freakin' feels!
Daniel Sempere in his 10 year-old is taken to visit The Cemetery of Forgotten Book by his father. The place suddenly captivates him with a lot of forgotten rare books. For coming the first time, Daniel has to choose a book from the cemetery and protect it with his best care.
n Destiny or Curse?n Daniel finds an interesting book by Julián Carax.. ‘The Shadow of the Wind’. It’s like this book is waiting for him for so long and after reading it, Daniel loved this book with his whole little heart.
Daniel try to find more of Carax’s books but he then discover that the book he own might be the only Carax’s book that have left. n Someone try to destroy all of Carax’s books.n Why? Daniel tries to investigate this mystery on and on until he becomes a teenager…

I want everyone to know this book, man. Not only the story is very-well craft and planned. The Romances are also awesome! I found myself giddy, giddy and happy with Daniel’s romance. Love their tensions actually. See, I don’t even want to tell you guys who is the heroine! lol
For another romance, the romance from Carax’s story is so heart-wrenching. I felt sad, shock, and almost cry. ( If only I haven’t read in public, I think I would cry )
The Bromance is also awesome! The one in Carax’s story and the friendship between Daniel and Fermín. Love how loyal Fermín is! As much I love Daniel, Fermín might be my fave. I just love his wit, I don’t know why? lol!
I cannot tell you much since it will be the spoilers. Let know this mysterious suspenseful story by yourself, that is all!

القراءة الثانية لظل الريح
اول عمل روائى اعيد قراءته منذ عودتى و ادمانى الجميل للقراءة
بالطبع كنت متخوفة لكن كارلوس لم يخذلنى رغم ان انفاسى لم تنقطع كما حدث فى قرائتى الاولى لكن نسيانى للكثير من الاحداث جعل استمتاعى بالرواية كأول مرة تقريبا ولازلت عند تقييمى واعجابى بها ، الفكرة والاسلوب والشخصيات
كانت حقا رحلة ممتعة

La forma como llegan los libros a nuestras manos a veces puede ser muy extraña.
Descubrí este libro en un supermercado. No recuerdo que compraba ese día, pero si recuerdo que cuando me acerqué a pagar, el nombre de esta novela captó mi atención de inmediato. Allí estaba exhibido en las cajas y solo había un ejemplar. No necesité mirar el autor ni tampoco leer la sinopsis; misteriosamente, solo leyendo el título y tocando el ejemplar tuve un deseo muy grande de leerlo; una sensación tan inexplicable pero tan conocida por muchos lectores, que sé que ustedes me entenderán y no es necesario explicarlo. En aquel año 2017, leí La Sombra del Viento con tantas ansias que al finalizarlo se convirtió de inmediato en uno de mis libros favoritos. Ahora en el 2020 mi objetivo de leer la tetralogía entera, me hizo decidir releer La Sombra del Viento para volverlo a disfrutar y recordar lo olvidado; y sí que fue una buena decisión, porque no recordaba casi nada. Eso hizo que me sorprendiera de nuevo con la historia y no parara de deleitarme con cada página. Sin embargo, en esta ocasión logré fijarme en algunos errores y cosas que no me gustaron, pero que en aquel 2017 pase por alto.
La historia trata sobre un joven llamado Daniel, que es llevado por su padre a un lugar llamado el Cementerio de los Libros Olvidados, para que él adopte un libro y lo cuide. La particularidad es que los libros que se encuentran en ese lugar nadie recuerda que existen, por lo que desconoceremos los secretos que encierra cada libro. Daniel toma un libro llamado La Sombra del Viento, lo lee y se obsesiona tanto por la historia y por su autor, que empezará a recorrer la ciudad de Barcelona para buscar información sobre Julian Carax, el autor de La Sombra del Viento. Con esta introducción, que si no estoy mal es el primer capítulo del libro, nos sumergiremos en 576 páginas llenas de misterio, suspenso, romance y de relatos impresionante de los personajes que son protagonistas en esta historia. A medida que avanzamos, sentiremos una gran necesidad por conocer más sobre Julián Carax y su historia; y cuando lleguemos a la mitad del libro esa necesidad se triplicará, porque el libro entra en un estado de adrenalina impresionante, donde sorpresa tras sorpresa y dato tras dato, nos dejará sorprendidos en cada momento.
La ambientación es excelente. Zafón nos expone una Barcelona triste y solitaria, con aspecto fantasmal, conmocionada por la guerra y con intensas historias que envuelven sus calles. Incluso experimenté un extraño frío mientras leí esta novela. Cuando se produce este tipo de efectos, significa que el autor ha hecho muy bien su trabajo, no queda ninguna duda.
El mejor personaje de la nóvela sin ninguna duda es Julián Carax. El protagonista es Daniel, pero en cuanto a desarrollo, pasado, personalidad y demás características, Julián es un personaje más completo. Julián es enigmático, independiente, apasionado, rebelde, pero eso no es todo; Julián Carax tiene un aura de misterio y de terror que lo rodea, que permite no hacerlo pasar desapercibido en ningún momento. En cuanto a los demás personajes tengo algunos conflictos. Los personajes que tienen relación con Julián me parecen muy bien desarrollados, con sus historias conmovedoras y aportes importantes en el transcurso de la nóvela. Sin embargo, los personajes que tienen relación directa con Daniel no me parecen tan buenos. Un ejemplo son los vecinos de Daniel, que me desagradaron en todo momento porque me hicieron recordar a esos vecinos entrometidos y calumniadores con los que he vivido toda mi vida; Fermin tampoco me agradó, porque es muy charlatán y no hacía sino hablar de sexo a cada rato. Ese tipo de personajes, que aunque entiendo son necesarios y fue el rol que Zafón les dio, nunca me impresionaron y me parecieron insoportables; tanto así, que ese es el motivo por el que la calificación no es de cinco estrellas. Otro detalle con referencia a los personajes es ¿por qué no se dice nunca el nombre del padre de Daniel, si es un personaje activo en toda la novela? Eso me pareció muy extraño, aunque como desconozco el contenido de los demás libros de la tetralogía, pensaría que la razón es que este personaje tiene un rol más importante en otro libro, y para no dañar la sorpresa Zafón evita decir el nombre, pero solo estoy haciendo conjeturas para buscarle un sentido a este hecho. En cuanto a Daniel, siento que es un personaje aceptable, pero no indispensable; cualquier otro pudo ser el protagonista y el resultado seguramente hubiera sido el mismo.
Carlos Ruiz Zafón podría fácilmente escribir libros eróticos. La mayoría de los individuos de esta novela tienden a tener pensamientos y deseos lujuriosos con bastante frecuencia, por lo que cuando se presentan escenas de este tipo, Zafón se convierte en un poeta para describir el acto sexual sin llegar al morbo, dándole prioridad a los sentimientos y pasión que cada uno de los personajes está teniendo en el momento. Además, la forma como incluye el romance en la historia es correcta y eso ayuda a darle más profundidad a las relaciones amorosas de la historia. Se nota que disfruta mucho creando este tipo de acontecimientos. Sin embargo, creo que lo que mejor hace Zafón es introducir suspenso y ansiedad en el lector, para luego revelar la verdad en el momento adecuada. La combinación terror-suspenso-romance que nos ofrece el autor es una muy buena fórmula.
Lo que no me gustó es que algunas escenas eran completamente innecesarias, tal y como la historia de satisfacer a un vagabundo con una prostituta; algunas “frases de albañil”, que de vez en cuando uno u otro personaje mencionaban para referirse a la mujer; y la grave equivocación de considerar a Bogotá una ciudad de Venezuela. Este es un error inaceptable. ¿Un escritor tan reconocido como Carlos Ruiz Zafón y con una falla tan categórica? No lo puedo creer. Estas son sus palabras:

Descubrí este libro en un supermercado. No recuerdo que compraba ese día, pero si recuerdo que cuando me acerqué a pagar, el nombre de esta novela captó mi atención de inmediato. Allí estaba exhibido en las cajas y solo había un ejemplar. No necesité mirar el autor ni tampoco leer la sinopsis; misteriosamente, solo leyendo el título y tocando el ejemplar tuve un deseo muy grande de leerlo; una sensación tan inexplicable pero tan conocida por muchos lectores, que sé que ustedes me entenderán y no es necesario explicarlo. En aquel año 2017, leí La Sombra del Viento con tantas ansias que al finalizarlo se convirtió de inmediato en uno de mis libros favoritos. Ahora en el 2020 mi objetivo de leer la tetralogía entera, me hizo decidir releer La Sombra del Viento para volverlo a disfrutar y recordar lo olvidado; y sí que fue una buena decisión, porque no recordaba casi nada. Eso hizo que me sorprendiera de nuevo con la historia y no parara de deleitarme con cada página. Sin embargo, en esta ocasión logré fijarme en algunos errores y cosas que no me gustaron, pero que en aquel 2017 pase por alto.
La historia trata sobre un joven llamado Daniel, que es llevado por su padre a un lugar llamado el Cementerio de los Libros Olvidados, para que él adopte un libro y lo cuide. La particularidad es que los libros que se encuentran en ese lugar nadie recuerda que existen, por lo que desconoceremos los secretos que encierra cada libro. Daniel toma un libro llamado La Sombra del Viento, lo lee y se obsesiona tanto por la historia y por su autor, que empezará a recorrer la ciudad de Barcelona para buscar información sobre Julian Carax, el autor de La Sombra del Viento. Con esta introducción, que si no estoy mal es el primer capítulo del libro, nos sumergiremos en 576 páginas llenas de misterio, suspenso, romance y de relatos impresionante de los personajes que son protagonistas en esta historia. A medida que avanzamos, sentiremos una gran necesidad por conocer más sobre Julián Carax y su historia; y cuando lleguemos a la mitad del libro esa necesidad se triplicará, porque el libro entra en un estado de adrenalina impresionante, donde sorpresa tras sorpresa y dato tras dato, nos dejará sorprendidos en cada momento.
La ambientación es excelente. Zafón nos expone una Barcelona triste y solitaria, con aspecto fantasmal, conmocionada por la guerra y con intensas historias que envuelven sus calles. Incluso experimenté un extraño frío mientras leí esta novela. Cuando se produce este tipo de efectos, significa que el autor ha hecho muy bien su trabajo, no queda ninguna duda.
El mejor personaje de la nóvela sin ninguna duda es Julián Carax. El protagonista es Daniel, pero en cuanto a desarrollo, pasado, personalidad y demás características, Julián es un personaje más completo. Julián es enigmático, independiente, apasionado, rebelde, pero eso no es todo; Julián Carax tiene un aura de misterio y de terror que lo rodea, que permite no hacerlo pasar desapercibido en ningún momento. En cuanto a los demás personajes tengo algunos conflictos. Los personajes que tienen relación con Julián me parecen muy bien desarrollados, con sus historias conmovedoras y aportes importantes en el transcurso de la nóvela. Sin embargo, los personajes que tienen relación directa con Daniel no me parecen tan buenos. Un ejemplo son los vecinos de Daniel, que me desagradaron en todo momento porque me hicieron recordar a esos vecinos entrometidos y calumniadores con los que he vivido toda mi vida; Fermin tampoco me agradó, porque es muy charlatán y no hacía sino hablar de sexo a cada rato. Ese tipo de personajes, que aunque entiendo son necesarios y fue el rol que Zafón les dio, nunca me impresionaron y me parecieron insoportables; tanto así, que ese es el motivo por el que la calificación no es de cinco estrellas. Otro detalle con referencia a los personajes es ¿por qué no se dice nunca el nombre del padre de Daniel, si es un personaje activo en toda la novela? Eso me pareció muy extraño, aunque como desconozco el contenido de los demás libros de la tetralogía, pensaría que la razón es que este personaje tiene un rol más importante en otro libro, y para no dañar la sorpresa Zafón evita decir el nombre, pero solo estoy haciendo conjeturas para buscarle un sentido a este hecho. En cuanto a Daniel, siento que es un personaje aceptable, pero no indispensable; cualquier otro pudo ser el protagonista y el resultado seguramente hubiera sido el mismo.
Carlos Ruiz Zafón podría fácilmente escribir libros eróticos. La mayoría de los individuos de esta novela tienden a tener pensamientos y deseos lujuriosos con bastante frecuencia, por lo que cuando se presentan escenas de este tipo, Zafón se convierte en un poeta para describir el acto sexual sin llegar al morbo, dándole prioridad a los sentimientos y pasión que cada uno de los personajes está teniendo en el momento. Además, la forma como incluye el romance en la historia es correcta y eso ayuda a darle más profundidad a las relaciones amorosas de la historia. Se nota que disfruta mucho creando este tipo de acontecimientos. Sin embargo, creo que lo que mejor hace Zafón es introducir suspenso y ansiedad en el lector, para luego revelar la verdad en el momento adecuada. La combinación terror-suspenso-romance que nos ofrece el autor es una muy buena fórmula.
