However, Alexander doesn't give up. When Jane balks at telling him, it is his warmth, love, and comfort that ultimately help her to open up.

After this exciting encounter, Alexander is then introduced to the other Catwings in the barn at the farm. The interactions and the new world that Alexander discovers among the Catwings are sure to capture the imagination of young readers.

As I mentioned earlier, this chapter book is super sweet. It offers a charming story filled with adventure, friendship, and a touch of magic that kids are bound to love.

Not every cat is born with wings. Take "Wonderful" Alexander Furby, for instance. He is a kitten raised by a wealthy owner, leading him to believe he is entitled to every advantage that wealth can bring. Alexander is completely convinced that no one can resist his charm and bravery. That is, until the day when curiosity gets the better of him and he slips out through the garden fence to explore the outside world.

The world outside isn't as friendly as his owner's place. Trucks nearly run over Alexander on the road, and dogs chase him up a very tall tree. The cold and tired cat then finds himself unable to find his way back down. Real life turns out to be a truly eye-opening experience for him.

Just as Alexander despairs of surviving his adventure in the treetops, a black kitten with wings appears and joins him on his perch. She wordlessly guides Alexander down the tree and then takes him to Overhill Farm, where she lives with her siblings Roger, Thelma, James, and Harriet, the famous winged cats from "Catwings". The black kitten is Jane, the younger sister that James and Harriet discovered in "Catwings Return" when they traveled back to the city of their birth. The Catwings' young human friends Hank and Susan take good care of them at Overhill Farm, providing plenty of food and the affectionate touch of gentle hands. Alexander is warmly welcomed to join this unique family.

Unlike her siblings, Jane doesn't speak in complete sentences. She only uses the words "Me" and "Hate", and only when expressing intense emotions. The Catwings don't know what exactly happened between the time when Jane was separated from their mother and when they found the lonesome kitten, but it must have been something truly awful to have rendered her mute. Alexander was often called wonderful by his rich owner without really deserving it. However, if he could somehow coax Jane to speak, then perhaps that compliment would finally fit. The question is, can he perform a miracle that not even four winged cats are capable of?

The Catwings stories are so straightforward that there isn't much room for complex emotions to develop, yet I still like them. It's easy to identify with these special felines who were sent away from their birthplace by their mother because she knew that on the mean streets, they would be seen as nothing but freaks. I rate "Wonderful Alexander and the Catwings" one and a half stars because there isn't a whole lot to the story. However, I don't doubt the book's value in teaching kids to read on their own. For that reason alone, I highly commend Ursula K. Le Guin for creating this series.
