Ursula K. Le Guin published twenty-two novels, eleven volumes of short stories, four collections of essays, twelve books for children, six volumes of poetry and four of translation, and has received many awards: Hugo, Nebula, National Book Award, PEN-Malamud, etc. Her recent publications include the novel Lavinia, an essay collection, Cheek by Jowl, and The Wild Girls. She lived in Portland, Oregon.

She was known for her treatment of gender (The Left Hand of Darkness, The Matter of Seggri), political systems (The Telling, The Dispossessed) and difference/otherness in any other form. Her interest in non-Western philosophies was reflected in works such as "Solitude" and The Telling but even more interesting are her imagined societies, often mixing traits extracted from her profound knowledge of anthropology acquired from growing up with her father, the famous anthropologist, Alfred Kroeber. The Hainish Cycle reflects the anthropologist's experience of immersing themselves in new strange cultures since most of their main characters and narrators (Le Guin favoured the first-person narration) are envoys from a humanitarian organization, the Ekumen, sent to investigate or ally themselves with the people of a different world and learn their ways.

It is truly delightful and fills one with much cat joy. The anticipation is palpable as I am going to see if book 4 is available at the library. The thought of getting my hands on that next installment in the series is exciting. I can't wait to walk through the library doors, scan the shelves, and hopefully find that precious book. The library is like a treasure trove, and I am on a mission to discover this particular gem. Whether it's sitting in a quiet corner and getting lost in the story or taking it home to enjoy in the comfort of my own space, the idea of having book 4 is simply wonderful. I have a feeling that it will bring even more entertainment and enjoyment than the previous books. So, off I go to the library, full of hope and excitement.

Alexander's sense of self-satisfaction is truly much funnier now that I'm an adult.

As a child, I might not have fully grasped the nuances of his excessive pride. But with the passage of time and the growth of my own understanding, I can see it in a whole new light.

His constant boasting and self-aggrandizement, which once seemed somewhat endearing, now strike me as almost comical.

It's as if he is living in a world of his own making, where he is the undisputed king.

However, this self-created reality often clashes with the actual circumstances, leading to some rather absurd situations.

His sense of self-satisfaction now serves as a reminder to me of the importance of humility and self-awareness.

It makes me appreciate those who are able to recognize their own limitations and still strive for growth and improvement.

Overall, Alexander's sense of self-satisfaction has become a source of amusement and a valuable lesson for me as an adult.

Another brilliant story with the Catwings. This one is about the power of helping each other, even when it might seem that we aren't fully equipped to do so. The Catwings find themselves in a situation where they need to come together and support one another.

Reread in May 2024, the most interesting aspect of this book emerges right at the very end. Alexander shows great determination as he convinces Jane to talk. She has been holding back about something that happened to her, something she won't easily disclose. In today's times, we might perhaps take a more gentle approach. However, Alexander doesn't give up. When Jane balks at telling him, it is his warmth, love, and comfort that ultimately help her to open up.

This story not only showcases the importance of perseverance but also the significance of offering emotional support. The Catwings' adventure teaches us valuable lessons about how we can make a difference in someone's life through our kindness and understanding.

The copy I possess is truly a relic from my husband's youthful days. These concise chapter books, which are specifically designed for beginning readers, have an additional charm. They serve as wonderful bedtime stories for those little ones who long to be read to for an extended period. My 5-year-old absolutely adores them. The simple language and engaging plots make these books perfect for both learning to read and enjoying a cozy bedtime routine. Each chapter is just the right length to keep a child's attention while also providing a sense of accomplishment as they progress through the book. It's heartwarming to see my child's face light up with excitement as I read these stories to them night after night.

Super cute chapter book for kids.

The story titled "Wonderful Alexander" presents an engaging scenario. Alexander finds himself stuck in a tree, facing a rather tricky situation. Fortunately, along comes Jane, who is a Catwing. With her unique ability to fly, she ascends to the tree to assist Alexander. However, there is a little complication as Jane cannot speak. But she manages to show Alexander the way to safely get down off the tree through her actions and gestures.

After this exciting encounter, Alexander is then introduced to the other Catwings in the barn at the farm. The interactions and the new world that Alexander discovers among the Catwings are sure to capture the imagination of young readers.

As I mentioned earlier, this chapter book is super sweet. It offers a charming story filled with adventure, friendship, and a touch of magic that kids are bound to love.
