Last Spooktober, I had the pleasure of reading another remarkable manga by this talented author. So, when I was invited to buddy-read this one too, I had no hesitation. It all begins with a young couple enjoying a vacation in Okinawa. Tadashi, while diving, narrowly escapes being killed by two sharks. He manages to make his way back onto the boat, where we are introduced to his girlfriend, Kaori. And let me tell you, she is quite the unpleasant character! Constantly complaining, yelling, calling Tadashi stupid, and bossing him around, yet never lifting a finger herself. To be honest, I wanted them to meet their untimely demise as soon as possible - what a great start! *lol* However, the story is not just about these two and their personalities. It's more about what they discover and get involved in. For the fish have started growing legs and are now moving onto land! How can fish sprout legs and survive on land? That's a great question, and it's answered in the first volume of this duology. But I won't spoil it for you. Just like in his other work (a trilogy), the author has managed to create some truly creepy body horror in this manga as well. I have to admit that the other manga appealed to me more so far, but I appreciate that the apparent slasher fest and body horror elements are once again intelligently crafted. The artwork is in black-and-white and, well, not as detailed as in the other manga. Nevertheless, it still manages to convey that sense of dread you feel when you run out of the water to safety, only to realize that this time, there is no escape.
