The story had some truly funny moments that kept me engaged initially. However, the ending was a huge letdown. Celeb journalist Ann Ross was given an almost impossible assignment - to interview a star who despised the media. He publicly embarrassed her, which led to her losing her job. She then returned to her small town. Coincidentally, the movie star ended up at her local hospital to seek healthcare and hide from the media. Ann volunteered there and, while trying to get the scoop, ended up falling for him. She also questioned her career choice and discovered that the hospital was performing unnecessary hysterectomies to make money.
This is where the book really started to disappoint. Instead of becoming a reporter who exposed the bad practices of the hospital, she decided to become a go-between for celebs to meet sick patients. What kind of "giving back" is that? It doesn't seem to address the real issue at hand. And we never find out what truly happened to the patients, except that they filed a class action suit. It would have been nice to have a little more depth and resolution to the story. Overall, it had potential but fell short in the end.
Thirty-year-old Ann Roth, an entertainment reporter, finds herself fired from her job in Hollywood. The reason? She lacks the so-called "killer instinct" required to land an interview with a reclusive movie star. However, fate takes an unexpected turn when Ann discovers that the very star has secretly been admitted to a hospital in her hometown in the Midwest due to cardiac issues. Seizing this opportunity, Ann decides to volunteer as a candy striper. Her plan is to get up close and personal with the star, hoping to prove to her former boss that she indeed has what it takes to be a successful reporter.
This story is a delightful blend of humor, quirkiness, and heartwarming moments. From the very beginning, it hooks the reader and keeps them engaged until the end. It's a story that shows how determination and a bit of creativity can lead to unexpected opportunities. I highly recommend this story to anyone looking for an entertaining and uplifting read.
**Re-Read 14 years later and still loved it!**
4.5/5
I was browsing the Chick Lit section in the library when this book caught my eye with its charming cover. I immediately checked it out and devoured it within 24 hours. I was completely captivated by the cute story it told, and it truly solidified my love for Chick Lit. This book had such an impact on me that I knew I wanted to own it and add it to my bookshelf. Years later, I finally got the chance to re-read it, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that I still loved it just as much as I did the first time. The characters were still as endearing, the plot was still as engaging, and it brought back all the warm and fuzzy feelings I had when I first read it. It's amazing how a book can have such a lasting effect and continue to bring joy and entertainment even after all these years.
