I wish I could say "interesting concept, poorly executed," but unfortunately, the end was so disappointingly anticlimactic that I can't even give it the credit of having an interesting concept. Michael was clearly an asshole who was leading Kristin on. Kristin, on the other hand, was an idiot in every sense of the word. The book was written in a very simplistic manner, constantly stating the obvious. There were some really cheap attempts at creating suspense, like the 2-page long "chapters" that ended with a cheesy, over-the-top "cliffhanger" that was easily explained in the very next sentence. Oh, and the cockroaches! What the hell was that about? For a moment, I thought maybe the book was going to be explained by Kristin having some mental disorder. There is actually a disease that makes people think there are bugs in their skin and causes them to scratch their skin open. But no, it was just another failed attempt to make the book scary. Then she goes to see her psychiatrist. What kind of psychiatrist gets angry at a patient for discontinuing therapy? He literally yelled at her and cursed her out. This man should definitely be fired. And then nothing came of the visit. She didn't like the man in the first place, so she should just find a new psychiatrist. And what was the point of mentioning that she was molested by her doctor as a child? It had nothing to do with the story. Plus, I'm no psychologist, but I think that would make her hate powerful men who take advantage of young women. And Michael is a powerful man who took advantage of her, a woman 16 years his junior. She didn't even have "daddy issues" to explain why she was so attached to him. Also, men should really not write romance scenes from a woman's perspective. Ugh. And why do the 2 kids act like Penley is their mother when she's not? What happened to their actual mother? That should be a huge red flag for Kristin to stay away from their asshole father, Michael. Another big red flag that he's not going to leave Penley is that her father is the reason Michael is so successful. Hello! He's not going to leave his wife for some young woman who doesn't even have a real job. Then it turns out Penley was also having an affair, and Kristin judges her for it. But of course, Michael is a perfect angel who is only cheating because Penley is a bitch and Kristin is so much better than her. I don't understand the psychology behind people cheating or murdering, but Michael could have handled the situation much better. He could have actually divorced Penley like he said he would and moved on with his life. That way, he might have been able to keep up his status with her father since the divorce would have been Penley's fault. I also don't get the point of mentioning that Kristin gave birth to a baby 3 years ago at the hotel and let it die there. Was that just to make her seem even worse? If she loves kids so much, why did she let her baby die? Is she just using her love for kids as a coping mechanism now? Am I missing something here? And is she dead at the end or not? Why did she wink from the body bag? I thought the whole reason she was seeing dead people was because she was dead in hell, reliving her last few days or seconds over and over again. The only reason I read this book was because a coworker gave it to me and kept asking if I'd read it yet. I never really wanted to read James Patterson's books before this, and I can't say I'll ever willingly pick up another book with his name on it again. There are some of his books on my "might read" list, but I think it's safe to say they will stay there forever unless I'm really desperate and have a moment of bad judgment. Maybe I just don't like beach reads, I don't know, but I guess I'm in the minority.
